I understand that parking restrictions and fines need to be in place, especially in city centres, as it would cause chaos on the roads. However, I do feel that I must vent some of my anger on the way my Local Authority in Bristol works in terms of parking.
The charges for parking are astronomically expensive if you wish to park in the centre of Bristol. I often see traffic wardens hunting around in 'packs', prowling by cars on parking meters so they can instantly give them a ticket as soon as they go one minute past the ticket expiry time.
Traffic wardens are now paid commission on how many tickets they manage to give out, they also work until midnight now as the majority of the parking meters charge up until midnight. I hate them, they are the dregs of society.
They purposely print tickets that you must display on your car dashboard that dont have any adhesive sticking on them so when you carefully place the ticket on your dashboard and shut the car door, the draught may blow the ticket into the footwell.
I was given a parking ticket in Bristol because I displayed my ticket in 'so it was unreadable to the traffic warden', this was actually displayed upside down on the dashboard and was perfectly legible. I appealled against this ticket and they did not charge me after I kicked up a fuss.
An abandoned car was dumped outside of my old student house about a year ago, after ringing the police, we waited a couple of days and still no-one had removed it. I then called the local authority and they said someone would pick it up the next day, nothing happened for a week, so another phone call was made resulting once more in false promises. After 3 months of phone calls and waiting, the car had still not been removed and it was falling apart where vandals had smashed the windows and lights and started taking bits of the car, so a neighbour offered to tow the car on to some double yellow lines near the centre. He did this with our help and the car was towed away within 45 minutes. This shows us exactly how my Local Auhtority works, they couldn't care less, unless they are making a quick buck out of the public.

Excellent story about the abandoned car! Brilliant solution. Shows just how daft things have become in this country. Ciao should have a category for congestion charging too, I bet there's lots of people with an opinion on THAT, come to think of it, I will go and suggest it.

HOW TO PARK FOR FREE:
1, Remove tax disk.
2, Let Down tyres.
3, Smash window.
Congratulation you can park as long as you like on these double yellow lines.
You have to remember these people will only pursue people who are likely to be able to pay! Rather than someone driving an uninsured, untaxed death trap.

I too had an abandoned car outside my house, but apparently if there are no parking restrictions, they have to be there fore 'X' amount of days (I think about 14) before the local authority can take them away. The police can do nothing.
