Years ago my wife's family used to holiday on a farm owned by a retired industrial chemist. I don't know how they train industrial chemists (or what on earth they do!), but this guy knew EVERYTHING.
When my wife suffered from teenage acne he handed her a bottle of hydrogen peroxide and the spots disappeared. When their dog suffered from eczema he appeared with a little tub of Flowers of Sulfur, which cured it in no time.
So when the dog developed lumps they naturally turned to him first. He said that his diet was too high in protein. He told them that although dogs belong to the carnivorous family they are not carnivores in the same way that, say, lions are. They don't have to eat ONLY meat. He recommended a mixed diet of meat, cereal and vegetables. This, note, was long before the complete mixes came out. But, before too long, complete mixes appeared on the supermarket shelves containing meal, cereal and vegetables. That man was before his time! The dogs lumps, by the way, quickly disappeared once on his new diet.
So now we have a choice of mixed foods for our dogs. We prefer Pascoes because we have now had a few dogs that love it. The first was a hulking great Rottweiller who looked like he should have been chewing on half a cow, but he loved his Pascoes. We now have a delicate, fussy Rough Collie (it was my wife's turn to choose the family dog!). We traipsed around Crufts this year (it was a wonderful experience, highly recommended) and got lots of samples of different dog foods. He turned his long nose up at most of them, even the expensive Eukenuba. But Pascoes he will eat.
As dog food goes, the smell is not too bad. We chuck a few handfuls in his bowl and cover it with boiling water the night before. We give it a stir in the morning and it's ready. It has it's own gravy, which dogs love and it looks healthy enough for a vegetarian.
