Patak's make a wide range of Indian food products and distribute in over 40 countries. It was founded in the late 1950s by the father of the current Chairman and Chief Executive, Kirit Pathak. They make numerous products apart from their curry pastes, and everything I have tried has proved to be superb, but I have chosen their curry pastes as the subject of this review.
There are many types of Patak's Curry Pastes - Korma, Balti, Madras, Buna, Biryani, Jalfrazi, Rogan Josh, and Vindaloo, to name but a few. Although many of the ingredients are the same, each one has it's own individual flavour and by adding it to meat, fish or vegetables you have an authentic Indian dish with very little hassle.
I find Patak's curry pastes extremely tasty, very convenient and as soon as you open the jar there is a wonderful aroma of curry.
My husband hates curry and just by separating some of our meals into two, such as mince or stew, and adding a tablespoon of, say, Madras Curry Paste, to one portion, we can both have the meal we really enjoy.
For instance, I cook the mince as usual in one pan then in another I add butter, a few more onions (I like onions!), mushrooms, tomatoes and a little water; wait until they are cooked through and then add half of the mince and a large tablespoon full of Patak's Madras curry paste and simmer for about half an hour. It is delicious.
Out of all the Patak's curry pastes I prefer the Madras as I like my curries hot, well not too hot, haven't dared to try their Vindaloo yet. It is a well-known fact that if a curry is too hot you lose a lot of the flavour.
All Patak's curry pastes are equally as good added to beef, chicken, lamb, fish or vegetables, but I use Madras with beef, Korma with chicken and Balti with lamb, somehow they seem to go together best, but it is all a matter of taste.
The Patak's pastes come in 283g glass jars with the name Pataks embossed round the top. The labels are brightly coloured with pictures of spices and other ingredients on them. On each label there is a main recipe for, say, Beef Madras, Lamb Balti or Chicken Korma, with other advice such as "Create a Marinade", or tips on what to add to make other curries.
Nutitional Information:
Each jar contains eight servings and typical values are as follows per serving
Calories 180 Protein 1.7g Carbohydrates 3.3g of which 1.7g is sugar Fat 17.9g Fibre 2.5 Sodium 1.0g
It is suitable for vegetarians and is Gluten free There is a warning that the product may contain traces of peanuts or tree nuts
As I said before most of the ingredients are the same such as:
Patak's have a very interesting web site (www.pataks.co.uk) There is the "Patak's Story", hundreds of recipes, information on regions of India, UK news (with all the new products etc., coming onto the market) and information on all the individual spices. Well worth looking at.
I do all my shopping at Sainsbury's and for some reason some of the Patak's Curry Pastes are different prices. For instance my Madras is £1.49 but the Korma is £1.52, I can only think it is the addition of coconut.
Conclusion ========= I consider Patak's Original Curry Pastes to be a superb product, for those of you who like curries, of course. They taste authentic and are easy to use with any type of meat, fish or vegetable and of course much cheaper than a take-away!!
Advantages: Flavoursome, tasty, suitable for all Veggies Disadvantages: Not to everyones taste buds
...a masterpiece when cooked with Patak's sauces so I was prepared to let her don the chefs hat and get down to it.
How pleased I was to try this. In fact, it was so good that we had another on Sunday to use up the leftovers!
So what makes it so good? Why is it so flavoursome and how does it make you feel?
Firstly, let me tell you about their product range.
The Pataks sauces comes in hady sized Jars. Just under 300ml each, they contain enough suace ... ...hungry you are.
As all Curries come in different strengths, so do the sauces. This is a great idea as it means people who like to eat fire and people who like it less hot are catered for.
On Saturday, we had a combination Sauce. This was 2 sauces added together to create our own blend. This is one of the beauties of Pataks. They are so well matched you can combine the different blends to make a truly unique flavour without ruining it apparently!

I enjoy a curry, but not a hot one. Where as my hubby loves a curry that is so hot that while he is eating it you can actually see the sweat on his face, and he can hardly talk, plus it burns the other end the next day.

...- I am writing about Patak's Curry Pastes, not their ready-made sauces.
I'm writing this whilst I wait for my dinner to finish cooking. Tonight, Matthew, I'm having a vegetable curry knocked up with the rather delicious Patak's Madras curry paste.
Being vegan, "ready meals" are not really in my vocabulary. Sure, there's one or two available, but the rare ones that exist taste like cardboard. And we don't have a microwave. I can't imagine what we'd ... ...to the cracking taste of Patak's pastes.
*** BRIEF HISTORY ***
Patak's is a family owned Indian food company based in Lancashire, England. It was established by L.G. Pathak who arrived in the UK in the 1950s and saw a market for authentic Indian food. So whilst it may be a UK company, the products they produce are the genuine article.
The pastes were created by Meena, the wife of Kirit Pathak (son of LG) in the mid 1970s. The range has been extended ...

Advantages: Excellent flavour, good value Disadvantages: Patak's pastes are more versatile
Now I love Indian food, and I know the curry purist would say that using ready-made pastes and sauces is a cop-out, but as far as I am concerned, the best way to take the hassle out of making a curry is to open a jar of Patak’s. You could spend all that time pounding garlic and ginger with a mortar and pestle, grinding and chopping cardamom, coriander, cumin and turmeric but, unless you cook curries on a regular basis, you will just have a ... ...it might be, but I prefer to let someone else do all the preparation!
Patak’s do a wide range of sauces and pastes, ranging from mild balti and korma, through medium rogan josh to hot Madras and very hot vindaloo. They are reasonably priced at 1.50-2 pounds (depending on where you buy), and all of them do taste good. The sauces themselves are ideal as a quick fix; just cook off some meat or poultry, maybe with some onions, pour on the sauce ...

Advantages: Authentic Spicy Tasty Not Too Expensive Disadvantages: Not Many unless you dislike curry
I have been tucking into fiery curries most of my life having got addicted as early as my 16 th year when, with my brother, I went to an "exotic" Indian restaurant in my home town, Straight away I got the curry bug. Ever since then I have had to have a "curry fix" at regular intervals. It is thus with great pleasure that I am writing this review on curry sauces. and smelt quite tasty I stuck in my fork to lance myself a nice chunk of chicken and CRUNCH!
Now correct me if I am wrong but soft juicy chicken is not supposed to go CRUNCH!
I was instead greeted with a chunk of curried ice, UGH!
I wouldn’t be totally put off of using Pataks products again however, I have tried some of their other foods before and I have been very satisfied (E.G. the curry filled wraps and the DIY currysauces) but I’ll be avoiding the Pataksoriginal microwave curries in future.
