'Tis going to be fine, son.
Review of Angela's Ashes - Frank McCourt by  Anna-Marie

Advantages: fantastic storyline with characters that will worm their way into your heart.
Disadvantages: none

...faults. On arrival to the lanes of Limerrick, their are 4 McCourt boys. Only too soon, though, the 'consumption' has claimed the lives of his twin brothers. He doesn't understand why they had to go to heaven, but prays that he won't have to go too. The family is kept going by the fierce love of their mother. Angela begs from the Saint Vincent de Paul for clothes and furniture, and from the priests for food. She never gives in to despair, and instills a great pride in her children. Angela's Ashes takes the reader on an emotional roller-coaster ride through the life of this young boy. I laughed at his achievements and cried at his defeats. The book is written from the heart, and with every word written, you feel closer to Frank. Hoping that he will find his dreams, praying that his life will get better. I won't spoil a great story by telling... Read review

Laying down the law...
Review of Preaching the Letters Without Dismissing the Law: A Lectionary Commentary - Clark Williamson, Ronald J. Allen by  frkurt

Advantages: Useful and good interpretation
Disadvantages: -

...has an inherent value all its own, as a covenant from God that has not been broken or altered, but indeed is maintained and should be recognised by current and future Christian communities, the power of which often resides in the preaching. Allen and Williamson give a brief introduction -- they introduce the writings of the New (Second) Testament in ways perhaps unrealised by most. Paul, for example, is often characterised as one who rails against 'the Jews'; we are told that Paul is a Pharisee (by Paul himself, no less), but it is often overlooked that Paul himself never has a disparaging or discouraging word about the Pharisees. By the following generation (when the gospels were written) there were many negative references to Pharisees, but these did not come from Paul himself, and are more likely representative of an internal debate... not one to miss
Review of Angela's Ashes - Frank McCourt by  laurajones

Advantages: has a sequel, amusing in parts, gripping storyline
Disadvantages: hard to get into at the beginning

...Having not seen the film but read the hype about ' Angela's Ashes', i decided to see for myself and so i bought the book. It was well worth the money!! I have just finished reading 'Angela's Ashes' and i extremely enjoyed it. It is an amusing but harrowing tale of Frank (Francis) Mc Court's life , being brought up in The Catholic town of Limerick, Ireland. The first bit of the book where we are introduced mainly to Frank's parents, is quite hard to get into although the story improves immensely as one reads on. When I was reading 'Angela's Ashes', i was shocked at how bad some of the poverty was in Ireland before and during the war. I really could not put the book down after i had got into it and i have just purchased the sequel to the novel, 'Tis which carries on from where Angela's Ashes left off. I would really recommend this book... Read review
