Review of Christianity Without Religion - Paul O'Higgins by Jeremiah

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

..."Christianity Without Religion" is a refreshing, challenging look at how not to get tangled up in all the 'religious' nonsense which has attached itself onto the true gospel message. The authors, Paul and Nuala O'Higgins, explain what it means to be truly free as a Christian - no longer tied down by your sins. I tried to read it at my usual snappy pace at first, but quickly realised that I was missing much of what they were saying. In this sense, it is a bit like an Epistle. Although the message is simple, there is a great deal of detail and meaning that can be easily missed. The writers understand the Judaic roots of Christianity, and illustrate well the inseparability of the Old and New Testament, as well as the modern implications of the traditional Jewish festivals. It would be most useful as a tool to help you study the Bible.... Read review

Soft Voice, Loud Roar
Review of From the Eye of the Hurricane: My Story - Alex Higgins by OnTheChin

Advantages: Well compiled, frank, moving and often amusing autobiography
Disadvantages: Sports fans will naturally find this more interesting but retains some general appeal.

...book. Autobiographies are few and far between that do not draw a rose-tinted veil over some of the uglier episodes in the author's life. Higgins is guilty of this to a degree and it seems reasonable to doubt that certain incidents may be viewed quite differently by other parties involved. However, the diminutive Irishman does admit his faults far more frequently and candidly than many writers do and for this he deserves credit. The reader gets greater satisfaction from the book as a result. Jimmy White, the other 'Peoples Champion' was always the favoured one from a personal point of view but having read both biographies, the tables have turned. As for today's champion of the people, Ronnie O'Sullivan, he may well be on a par as a snooker player (though arguably better) but if he had an ounce of the charisma or wit of The Hurricane, snooker...
