groups of children. It's late at night and Mr Bear is desperately trying to sleep--but Mrs Bear snores so he tries Baby Bear's room, but Baby Bear is pretending to be an aeroplane so there's no peace there. Room by room Mr Bear goes through the house trying to find somewhere to sleep. Bright colourful pictures accompany the simple, repetitive text of this delightful storybook. Children will delight in all the wonderful sound effects and Mr Bear's reaction--"TICK-TOCK...went the living room clock...TICK-TOCK, TICK-TOCK. CUCKOO! CUCKOO! "Oh NO!" said Mr Bear, "I can't stand THIS." So he went off to sleep in the kitchen." And parents will have plenty of empathy for poor Mr Bear's predicament. When I read this to a group of 4 and 5 year olds today, it was really hard to believe that this book is infact a quarter of a century old, God how old does that make me feel!!
Written in 1980, this was Jill Murphy's fist picture book and was commended for the Kate Greenaway Medal.
Jill had already written the Worst Witch stories which are still enjoyed by the Year 2 children at my school, it has to be said though, it's predominantly the girls who enjoy this series.
Peace At Last, however is 'unisex' in the sense that it is enjoyed by the girls and boys I read it to.
********************************************************************** The Story ********************************************************************* It begins at bedtime. Mr & Mrs Bear along with Baby Bear all go up to bed. Mrs Bear went straight to sleep (if only I was like that!) but Mr Bear couldn't sleep and found it exceptionally hard when the Missus begins to snore. "Oh NO!" said Mr Bear " I can't stand THIS." So he goes in to baby bear's room who is , pretending to be an aeroplane.................he can't stand that noise so goes in to the living room for some peace and quiet. But the tick-tock of the cuckoo clock irritates him so he tries the kitchen, where guess what, there's a dripping tap and the hum of the fridge. The garden is no better because of the different sounds of the animals. The car is cold and uncomfortable but he was so tired he just begins to drift off to sleep when the sun begins to come up and the birds start their early morning call.
So exasperated he goes back in to the house and in to bed and says, " Peace at last."
No such luck, within minutes the alarm clock goes off. Mrs Bear asks if he has slept well and goes to make him a cuppa.
********************************************************************** Illustrations ********************************************************************** Jill Murphy's illustrations in this book are quite comical and can be appreciated by adults. The sheer exasperation and exhaustion on Mr Bear's face as the night drags on and he is faced with all of the different noises is captured brilliantly by Murphy.
In the living room, Mr Bear is depicted on the armchair with a pillow over his head in an attempt to drown out the tick-tock of the clock and the expression on Mr Bear's eyes when the alarm clock goes off will be appreciated by adults who have had a terrible night's sleep and the fear of the alarm call!
The illustrations are bright and very busy so that a lot can be discussed with very young children.
I've taken some photos of the illustrations.
**********************************************************************The style and age range ********************************************************************** I have read this with 3 - 6 year olds. The children love the sound effects that they can re-create: the snoring, the 'nyaaow' of the aeroplane, the tick-tock and cuckoo of the clock, the dripping of the tap, the'too-whit-too-whoo' of the owl, the 'miaow' of the cat and so on..............but be prepared for quite a bit of noise if reading this to a large group, all great fun though!
The text isn't too tricky and the repetitive speech of Mr Bear, 'Oh NO, I can't stand THIS' is really good for children, as it builds up their memory and encourages participation.
We looked at the capital letters in some of Mr Bear's words today and discussed why capitals were used.....once the children realised that it depicted Mr Bear's louder voice they joined in with huge voices!

Advantages: Use of repetition, well illustrated, strong family feel. Disadvantages: Not a particularly strong moral.
The bear family are tired and decide to go to bed. Mr Bear cannot sleep. It does not help when Mrs Bear starts snoring, he goes to Baby Bear's room and he is not asleep either. He is playing aeroplane noises in bed. Mr Bear goes from room to room trying to find somewhere quiet to sleep. Will he ever get any rest?
"Peace at Last" by Jill Murphy is a simplistically told story of one poor bears futile attempts to get a decent nights rest. As we follow ... ...is forced to endure a variety of sounds from snoring to dripping taps. Jill Murphy has written a repetitive tale that will be popular with all pre-schoolers as it certainly is with my three year old. Murphy's repetitive language are coupled with pages that slowly increase in length, indicating the increasing frustrations of Mr Bear. This allows my three-year-old to become easily hooked in the early, less descriptive pages and she is aware of Mr Bear's ...

Advantages: lovely story and illustrations Disadvantages: none
Peace at Last' is a lovely picture book written and illustrated by Jill Murphy. It tells the story of a family of bears and what happened one night when Mr Bear found it difficult to sleep!
It all starts well enough for Mr Bear - all the family are tired and all go up to bed. Mr and Mrs Bear get into bed together and we are treated to a lovely picture of the two bears - one fast asleep and the other wide awake! Why, you might ask, can't Mr Bear ... ...VERY LOUDLY! I quite like this role reversal as normally, or so it is in my house, the man who keeps the woman awake! Or is that just me?
Anyway, back to the story...Mr Bear gets very fed up and says 'I can't stand THIS' and up he gets to go and found somewhere quiet to sleep. However, as you can probably imagine, nothing is that straightforward. Everywhere he goes - Little Bear's room, the kitchen, the living room, the garden - there is always ...

...by Jill Murphy. Peace at Last is written and illustrated by Jill Murphy, it is a book that is great for bedtime reading but also suitable at other times, we read the story at various times over the week and thoroughly enjoyed it. The basic plot surrounds poor Daddy Bear and his inability to get to sleep, it all starts with Mummy Bear’s snoring and goes through the whole house in Daddy Bear’s quest for a good night’s sleep, we are in Baby Bear’s room, ... ...poor daddy can find no peace. We can all sympathise with Daddy Bear and all have had nights when it just seems impossible to get over to sleep and where every little noise seems even louder and very annoying. The book is set at night and introduces us to lots of familiar areas but from the perspective of the night time scene, dark, quiet but also active and noisy. There is nothing scary in the book, indeed it is a good way to discuss with your child ...

Advantages: Simple Story, Great Illustrations, Disadvantages: Children don't want it to stop.
As an Easter present this year my parents bought the children Book Tokens. A fabulous idea as it meant that they could choose some books to add to the collection of the many books which they have already.
For Murray it is often quite hard to strike a balance on a not too simple book and not too grown up for him yet book. He loves "Peace at Last" by JillMurphy, so when I saw "Whatever Next!" by JillMurphy, I decided that we would get that one for him.
Whatever Next introduces us to the Bear family again. Baby Bear is peering out of the window out into the dark night and asks to go to the moon. His mother says no because it is Bathtime. Does that deter Baby Bear? Of course not, he is a little bear who loves adventure. He finds himself a space rocket, then a hat and space boots and he heads off up the chimney in search ...
Advantages: Great Story, Great Illustrations, Jill Murphy Disadvantages: None
To the moon and back is basically what this story is about (and how far I'd travel for one of JillMurphy's books!)
I bought this for my son when he was 2. At the age of 4 he now tells me the story. While his younger brother aged 18 months just enjoys running around with a colander on his head!
The illustrations really make it for me, such lovely warm colours. My son loves the fact that Baby Bear has the same clock as us on his mantelpiece! Those of you familiar with JillMurphy's 'Peace at Last' will know Mrs Bear and Baby Bear.
On the cover of the book Baby Bear is shown whooshing through the chimney in a cardboard box complete with colander on his head, jetting off to the moon.
Mrs Bear is busy running the bath for Baby Bear at bedtime, when he asks if he can go to the moon. He finds a rocket in the cupboard under ...
Advantages: Helps them with other subjects at school and if made fun can turn into a lifetime love affair with books. Disadvantages: None
the voices in a funny way then the child is going to join in. I remember my daughter when listening to Jack and the Beanstalk would never let me say the Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum. That was her bit.
She now gets home with her library books and reads them all on the first night, but she never takes them back until the due date so that she can read them over and over again.
Although she is now an excellent reader (she's currently reading The Chronicles Of Narnia) her favourite book is still Peace At Last by JillMurphy this is another book that is perfect for early readers, if they can't read the words they can still join in and do the sound effects.
I am not someone who stops my daughter from watching the television, I encourage it on occasions, she also has a computer and like all other children enjoys doing a lot of different things. But there ...
The hour was late and Mr Bear was tired. But he could not sleep however he tried and wherever he tried. Snore, Snore went Mrs Bear. Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock went the clock. Would he never get to sleep? The familiar noises, repetition and beautiful illustrations make this delightful picture book an all-time favourite with children and adults everywhere.
