Until recently I used Pearl Drops Whitening Toothpolish on a daily basis - I don't use it daily anymore but on to that later.
The ideal behind this product is that as it states it "Gently removes stains for natural whiteness." Considering my teeth are not in bad condition (no fillings etc) they still needed a bit of whitening.
This is readily available in chemists and all supermarkets and is in very disctinctive packaging and is £2.39 in my local supermarket for a 50ml tube.
The nice thing about this product is that is it in a tube but it has a nice circular lid that the product stands on - you only need to squeeze the tube a small amount and the gravity does the rest - this means the product is standing up on the shelf all the time - quite ingenious I thought.
The tubes in various mint flavours (spearmint, cool mint and peppermint) including a smokers version but to be honest they all taste the same to me. The tube has a big Pearl Drops logo emblazoned on it so would be hard to miss on the shop shelves.
I find it interesting that this is not marketed as a toothpaste but as a toothpolish. I have certainly found that this is not a product that I would actually use to clean my teeth. Normal toothpaste lathers up nicely when you use it but I found that Pearl Drops do not and in order to make my teeth feel really clean and fresh i need to use a normal toothpaste and then rinse and then use this product after, however the tube says that this can be used alone or after a normal toothpaste.
Well does it work is what you all want to know. Well I really believe this product does work. My teeth are certainly noticeably more whiter when I have used it but they are not overwhite so it looks I have scrubbed them in paint!!! However like anything the effect is better when used over long periods of time.
It states that the product contains two special whiteners to poilsh away stains and is gentle enough to use twice a day. However here comes the warning.
*WARNING*
My dentist is definately against this product. He is a family friend so I trust him totally and he said that Pearl Drops are quite dangerous for teeth enamel. Apparently they work by scraping off the top layer of the teeth enamel to remove any discolouring. In doing this my dentist says that they are very abrasive and can actaully scratch the tooth enamel leaving small microscopic scratches on your teeth that you can't see. This he says then causes more discolouration as it sits in the small scratches and the vicious circle continues. Therefore I have taken his advice and I only use it for special occassions and this is therefore not a product that I use every day. I am not saying that his view of this product is typical of all dentists view but he certainly believes that this is too abrasive for everyday use - and he is after all the professional.
But all in all is ok for a nice out when you want your teeth to sparkle - literally
