I enjoy spoiling my girlfriend dogs and we always have lots of dog treats in the cupboards. One treat we have at home at the moment are Pedigree Denta Stix. As you will see after reading this review these are not just dog treat’s, they also have a few other advantages.
Packaging Pedigree Denta Stix come in yellow packaging with the Pedigree logo (the ribbon) on the front at the top. Once the packet has been opened, there is no way of re-sealing it so you may need to store the treats in an ait tight container.
Price I buy these treats from Tesco where they are available in two different sizes. One size for small dogs and another size for large dogs. You can buy a pack of 7 sticks for a small dog for £1.38 and the same amount of sticks for a large dog costs £1.74. These sticks are also available in larger packets which contain 28 sticks. For a small dog these cost £4.94 and for a medium / large dog, it costs £6.94.
What Are They? The Denta Stix themselves are in the design of a cross and the shape continues throughout the length of the stick. The sticks are purposefully designed in this shape as it means that while your dog is chewing the treat, the treat is removing plaque and tartar from between the teeth of your dog. The odd shape means that the treat can get into all the little nooks and crannies between your dogs teeth.
How Many Do You Get In A Packet? There are two varieties of these treats as I mentioned above. You can buy a pack of 7 (which is one for every day of the week) or you can buy a pack of 28 (which will means a treat a day for the month)
Range Pedigree have recently brought out a new Denta Stix which has two different flavours within one packet. The two flavours within the packet are beef and chicken flavour.
Why Are They Good For My Dog? Pedigree state that Denta Stix ‘aim to prevent the build up or tartar and plaque on your dogs teeth and help to promote healthy teeth and gums with their unique shape which allows the dog to chew on them while helping to protect their teeth and gums’ They have actually been clinically proven to reduce plaque and tartar. Its gently abrasive texture and unique shape can help reduce plaque and tartar build-up by up to 50%. The idea is that you have to give your dog a Denta Stix once a day to see results!
Do My Dogs Like Them? Our dogs absolutely love these. These treats are odd because they are fairly hard but can be penetrated if you dig your nail into the chew. I guess the texture is a bit like plasticine that has been left out of the tub! But the main point is that the dogs really enjoy them, actually chewing off small bits and eating them.
Overall I would definitely recommend these Denta Stix. Personally we do not use them for the fact that they help to remove plaque and tartar and we do not feed one a day as instructed because I like to vary the treats they get. I certainly think this is an excellent way of looking after your dogs teeth though and much better than trying to clean their teeth with a toothbrush! They are pretty good value for money too, especially considering they are made by a trusted brand. I think that the pedigree Denta Stix are the most versatile pet treat that I have come across, they provide enjoyment as a treat for dogs as well as helping to keep their teeth and gums healthy!
Advantages: Makes for a happy dog and a happier owner, Disadvantages: Slightly expensive but worth every penny
...five years ago, I discovered Pedigree Dentastix and decided they were worth a try. Looking at the ingredients of these ( cereals, derivatives of vegetable origin, minerals,, zinc sulphate and EU permitted preservatives and colourants), I am hard pressed to understand how they work. The claim is that each stick “ has a unique X shape and, when fed daily, it’s clinically proven to help reduce tartar build up by 80%” … thus helping “ to keep your dog’s ... ...alternate these daily with the Pedigree Joint Care Stix (a review of this product, to follow along with a further saga of Woody’s woes once Ciao have added it). In any case it’s a price worth paying when one considers the possible alternative …. expensive dental treatment. Even 8 years ago the teeth extraction and antibiotic treatment cost me over £300.
The Pedigree website does not actually claim that these are an alternative to brushing, although ...

Advantages: My dog loves them, dentist approval of the results Disadvantages: None that I can think of
Created by Pedigree, these are the best thing I have found that keep your doggy's nashers clean and healthy, and also helps with the doggy breath somewhat too.
The Stix themselves are a chewy treat which cleans your dogs teeth as they chew, I think inside they have a rough texture, but not too rough to cause any damage. The chews have a cross pattern which runs the length of the chew, ensuring that your dog chews it to the best of its abilities.
... ...both flavours are provided in the pack to give your dog some variety.
The packs are supplied as a pack of 7, for one weeks supply, or a pack of 28. I prefer to buy the pack of 28, as it works out a little cheaper, and sometimes my local supermarket sells out so I buy a new pack mid way through.
The pack of 7 should come in somewhere between £1.50, and £2, with the 28 pack being somewhere between £5 and £6.
Their are four different packs available, ...

Advantages: Dogs love them, they are clean Disadvantages: No replacement for brushing teeth
being the responsible dog owners we are, we followed the vet’s advice and bought appropriate food (she wouldn’t touch it), we started brushing her teeth more regularly, once a day (she hated it) then we thought we had struck gold. We discovered PedigreeDentaStix, for ‘health you can see’. Meg loved them, couldn’t get enough of them. We though that we had solved the problem. We continued with the diet and tooth brushing but we thought that these tasty little treats were bound to do some good…wouldn’t they?
