I take my pocket camera kayaking, snorkeling and river running!

Advantages: Waterproof, pocket-sized and decent pictures
Disadvantages: Clearly not as good as a digital SLR and some features are rather gimicky

. We had previously looked into whether there was a camera available that was designed for travel, something that offered a bit of bump protection and, maybe even a splashproof facility. Unless we wanted to spend an additional £100 (at the time) on a waterproof case for a standard camera (which would make the whole as bulky as our existing Kodak) it seemed that there was a hole in the market. That was until we discovered the Pentax Optio WP. It was new on the market at the time and there was little written about it. As it was no more expensive than most of the other compacts from the major photography houses we decided to make the leap. We've no regrets. The camera itself comes in at a tiny 102 x 51 x 22mm (WxHxD) weighs 120g and is made from rather sturdy plastic. It feels great in the hands and certainly more robust than many ...

Review of Pentax Optio WP

Optio WP - so versatile it's unbelievable.

Advantages: can really take it anywhere
Disadvantages: mine freezes occasionally

I have had this camera for 2 years now and I see myself keeping it for a long time to come yet. Doing a lot of canoeing it is perfect for me. I keep it in my bouyancy aid and never have to worry about going over. With some waterproof cameras I have used - you end up with water droplets on the lens cover and so end up with blurry pictures. I rarely have this with the Optio. I keep it in a neoprene case and this is a brilliant combination, giving it some protection. The only problem I've had with it is in cold weather it sometimes freezes so you have to take the battery out to reset it. This happened out of warranty so have learned to live with it. The camera is so great though I won't allow it to affect my view of this amazing camera. The size of it is brilliant considering it has a 3x zoom, and 5 megapixels is more than ...

Review of Pentax Optio WP

Great for bird watchers

Advantages: Fantastic zoom, great value for money
Disadvantages: A little heavy when walking

OVERVIEW As a keen bird watcher, in the spring I decided to replace my rather tatty old (but dearly loved) glasses. The local photography shop introduced me to the Bresser range, and despite my initial concerns over size and weight was 'sold with the Hunter 10x50. These are a very reasonably priced pair, costing around £ 40. They have fantastic light transmission, and their fully coated optics produce an ultra clear high-contrast image replication, this is particularly suitable I find when using the higher magnification. TECHNICALS... Objective Diameter (mm): 50 Magnification: 10x Field of View (m@1000m): 119 Exit Pupil diam. (mm): 5 Close Focus (m): 5 BK-7 Porro Prism design Fully coated optics Width (mm): 165 Length (mm): 192 Depth (mm): 60 Weight (gms): 750 They are coated in a very tough rubber ...
