Advantages: Small; sharp; wide zoom ratio for film P&S's Disadvantages: Seems a bit fragile, so take care of it.

A Pentax 150 wowed me with image quality, & this 170 seems to be a trace better. This Pentax beats the image quality of most affordable P&S's & gives better value than the unaffordable brands.

Yeah, yeah I know I'm late...been away from photography since Mt St Helens almost blew me up in 1980. Shot 30000 pix with Fuji slrs & Kodachrome 25 film till then. One warning, as with all long ratio zoom P&S cameras...as you approach the long end of the zoom range you can see the viewfinder image shakes more. To keep images sharp you would really like higher shutter speeds. But as you zoom higher the lense becomes "slower", forcing the camera to pick lower shutter speeds to maintain briteness. Sharp images at long focal lengths with ASA 100 film without a tripod cannot be assured... even in sunlite... & cloudy weather pix under such conditions will insure blurry pix. Yes, you'll take lots of Pentax film pix before an affordable digital camera will be built to beat your picture quality. Grace & peace to you...litesong
