The only power needed is for the exposure meter from a small battery which is activated when the lens cap is removed. The built-in through-the-lens meter measures the average brightness of the ground glass at full aperture and then couples to the aperture, shutter and film speed settings. The shutter mechanism is completely manual meaning that the camera can still be used even when the battery is exhausted, with a little guess work for the exposure. The focal plane shutter extends from speeds B, 1 second to 1/1000 of a second. The B shutter is perfect for night photography shots providing a steady hand is in use or a cable release.
The K1000 has an X terminal to the left of the lens fitting to attach a flash for flash synchronisation if and when it is needed. The X synchronisation is at 1/60 of a second. Other features include infra-red photography and multiple exposures. The lenses have an infra-red index indicated by an orange line on the depth of field guide. Multiple exposures can be taken by forcing the film to stay in place and cocking the shutter ready to expose again.
All in all a great piece of kit for the photographer requiring unlimited control in exposure, focusing and speed. Perfect picture taking ensues.

I spent a year looking for my first DSLR and had decided to save up for a Nikon D200. I was looking to enter the low end of the pro market so that my camera had enough challenge about it, but after awhile I realised that the D200 was going to cost me about £1000 just to get started which would have meant another year of saving up. Then came the reviews of the PentaxK10D in the Magazines and their view was that it compares very closely to the Nikon D200.
I looked around and found a great deal at £615.00 with kit lens and 1gig extreme III SD card and the screw on battery pack.
I set the camera up and was blown away by the image quality on minimal settings. I couldn't have asked for a better camera to start off with really but it's not for total beginners as there are no scene modes. ...

Advantages: 10.1 megapixel digital camera, well built, dazzling pictures, loads of features Disadvantages: Price
. The fact that it can take 3.3 images per second makes this a great camera for the paparazzi, professional photographer who takes portraits or an enthusiast who would not honestly be disappointed with the pictures produced.
If asked to make a recommendation to a professional making a purchase with a budget of between £500-£1000 I would have no problem in taking them immediately to the PentaxK10D. Once you have it in your hands and seen the out of this world pictures that are produced with exceptional colour depth you will not want to put it down.
