"pentax k1000- beginners luck"

All photography students are well aquainted with the Pentax K1000 as it has been used as a value for money SLR for many years now. The choice of schools and Universities to buy this camera, alone emphasises its reliability and ease of use for a beginner.
For those who have surpassed the beginners' stage, this camera provides an excellent and very compatible base for extras to be added. For instance larger lenses can be added which will magnify and allow greater scope for picture taking. A flash can also be added and there is a terminal on the camera front to where it can be attached for flash synchronisation. This hot shoe allows a variety of other components to be added to the camera for example an air release which will allow the photographer to stand away from the camera viewfinder and still take the shot.

The joy of having an old Pentax K1000 SLR is the complete control you have over everything in this camera. From changing the aperture to over expose or under expose to changing the shutter speed which can keep the shutter open fo longer allowing moving objects to be snapped in motion! From changing the depth of field, or toggling with infra-red views, to taking multiple exposures by forcing the film to stay put whilst you take photos one on top of the other.

Aesathetically, this camera is old and is designed mostly for function. This is the beauty of it! There are coloured lines marked on the lens, with the settings written on the front of the camera instead of on a 'Menu' located in the viewfinder of a modern camera.

It's weight makes it harder to hold for longer periods although for those prone to dropping things, it is very durable
p.s. I have marked the pentax k1000 as being heavy. This is only compared to newer SLRs currently on the market and is about Average for old SLRs. It is also worth mentioning that the battery is not indispensable as the camera can mechanically still take pictures even without a charged battery!

Good review Pauline, sounds a good camera. The Pentax, along with Nikon FMs, Olympus OMs etc are all built to last and hopefully will be around for many more years to come. I'm inclined to think digital cameras won't last as long. Long live the SLR! Tony

I've had a Pentax SLR for more years than I care to think of! Still my favourite camera even though I have three others. Hazel xx

Good op. My first job in 1978 was working in a camera shop in Portsmouth, and at that time this camera was a serious bit of kit, and was expensive. I had one for many years, because at the time being a K fit lens, you could get a good range of cheap lenes.
