After using several film SLR cameras, and advanced digital compacts, I thought it was about time I save up for my first DSLR. I take my photography quite seriously, so I needed something that was within my budget and produced good quality images.
The first thing I noticed about the camera, is the build. I liked how sturdy it was, yet not too heavy that it'd become a nightmare to carry around. It was just perfect for me. I had tried using my friend's Canon EOS 350D, which I found far too lightweight, and the Pentax K100D was that extra bit heavier, which I found far better to use; especially when adding bigger lenses.
When I opened the box, I got the camera started straight away. The menu's were simple enough to get used to, and within moments, I felt like I'd been using it for months.
The FN button, allows you to quickly change the ISO, white balance, drive mode and flash settings. Which is very useful when you're on the spot.
The auto settings on this camera always come out with good images, as you have fully auto, and several other scene modes to choose from. I only ever use Manual, Aperture and Shutter priority however, as I like to get as much control out of my images as possible.
I would just like to mention that despite the amount of megapixels, I have been able to print great quality images from this camera. People often ask me how many megapixels my camera uses, and are very surprised when I reply. It just shows that megapixels aren't everything.
The only thing I have issues with, in Playback mode, sometimes I would like an easier way to delete multiple images at once. But with this camera, you only have the options to delete them one by one, or delete all of them in one go. So if you're trying to get rid of some images that you do not want, you have to waste battery just deleting them one by one.
All in all, It's a great camera, suibtable for all sorts of different images. I use the standard 18-55mm lens, as well as a Sigma 70-300mmMacro lens. More accessories are becoming available for these DSLR's as Pentax builds popularity.
I got my Pentax K100D about 9 months ago, and I'm happy to say that I won't be buying another camera for a long time.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
(+) Ultra-compact dimensions, fun automatic tools, good performance for the asking price (-) Cluttered menu layout, camera buttons are scarce, specs are almost identical to the Samsung ES15
