Growing up Pentax was always a brand associated with photography quality and when designing and releasing the K10D onto the market it is clear that Pentax have retained all of their old qualities instead of going down the smaller is better route they have stuck with tradition and produced a camera that looks and performs how a camera should. Far too advanced for my own needs my experiences given here will be from the demonstrations I have performed for customers.
Cost & Availability:
A brand new Pentax K10D will cost in the region of £500-£750 and most good camera stores will stock at least one, with any potential purchased having to be ordered in but online you will find a number of retailers who keep these in stock for immediate availability.
Shopping around is highly advisable as you will find the Pentax K10D closer the price range online.
What you get for your money:
A standard package will contain the camera, the battery, a USB cable and the camera software. As we are rarely asked to demonstrate this model we did not have the software for the camera loaded onto any of the laptops within our store. When asked to provide a demonstration recently I actually took the software and loaded it without reading the installation guide in less than 5 minutes much to my, and the customers satisfaction. The installation guide is actually bigger than the instruction manual due to the number of special effects that can be used when playing around with downloaded pictures. There is the red eye removal that comes with most camera software but also a distortion piece, the option to smear sections of photographs and a blurring for backgrounds to bring out objects the foreground making that little bit crisper and clearer without having to go out and take an other shot.
With a camera in the professional price range as you would expect the instruction manual is packed with jargon and technical detail which would give any entry level photographer a headache within minutes.
Size, look and feel:
Weighing well over 700g without the battery and 920g with it inserted the Pentax K10D is one hell of a heavy piece of equipment that just feels solidly built as soon as it is in your hands. Rather than being cumbersome, the weight is reassuring. By the weight you can guess that it is quite a large camera being 14.1cm across, 10.1cm high and 7cm deep.
I have attached a picture of the camera for reference as Ciao do not seem to have one and you would be mistaken to thinking you were looking a SLR rather than digital model. The telltale giveaway is the rear of the camera where the 2.5 inch LCD monitor which acts as a viewfinder but also reproduces pictures once they have been taken.
Technical Stuff:
*PENTAX-developed Shake Reduction (SR) system 10.1 megapixel CCD High-precision SAFOX VIII 11-point auto focus Sensitivity equivalent to ISO 100 to 3200 Large 2.5-inch LCD monitor
My thoughts:
The Pentax K10D is a fantastic camera, but you would expect that if you had just paid so much for it. The fact that it can take 3.3 images per second makes this a great camera for the paparazzi, professional photographer who takes portraits or an enthusiast who would not honestly be disappointed with the pictures produced.
If asked to make a recommendation to a professional making a purchase with a budget of between £500-£1000 I would have no problem in taking them immediately to the Pentax K10D. Once you have it in your hands and seen the out of this world pictures that are produced with exceptional colour depth you will not want to put it down.
Advantages: Extreme weather seals, image stabalisation, dust removal, SV and MTF Disadvantages: Not for beginners, hi ISO noise
...came the reviews of the Pentax K10D in the Magazines and their view was that it compares very closely to the Nikon D200.
I looked around and found a great deal at £615.00 with kit lens and 1gig extreme III SD card and the screw on battery pack.
I set the camera up and was blown away by the image quality on minimal settings. I couldn't have asked for a better camera to start off with really but it's not for total beginners as there are no scene ...

Advantages: FIRST MOVIE MODE IN dSLR, user friendly, exellent image quality, good resolution Disadvantages: Not that really stand out loud
. It is true that the competition will come not only from Canon with its cheaper Rebel Xsi, Sony?s Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 (12.2 mega pixel), PentaxK20D (14.6 mega pixel) but mainly from its own 40D (10 mega pixel) which must be a great source of pride for Nikon. The company has made out a niche of coming out with super quality cameras and has justified the faith of millions with the Nikon D90.
At 132 x 103 x 77 mm (5.2 x 4.1 x 3.0 in) weighing 585 g (1.3 lb) without battery and: 668 g (1.5 lb) with battery the Kanon D90 is definitely on the bulkier side compared to others in its price range but it more sturdy and substantial for that matter. Some of its features are similar to the D80 like the size, uses the same battery and has similar vertical grip.
Talking about the upgrade from D80 the first and foremost is its new CMOS sensor which ...

Advantages: Articulating LCD,Can take pictures from many odd angles Disadvantages: all important controls are positioned awkwardly
I'm very excited to have this flagship DSLR camera with me.
E3 may just be the best choice for those shooting in harsh conditions and its strength lies in areas of auto focus, implementation of live view, dust reduction and environmental sealing. The Olympus E-3 is really more better and comparable to the cameras by Olympus's competitors that we've been categorizing as semi-pro,such as the PentaxK10D, Canon 40D, and Nikon D200.With the E-3, Olympus introduces their first new autofocus sensor in years. Company claiming that this is the fastest AF system on the market. Combined with greater 1.15x magnification in the E-3's viewfinder, framing and focusing with this Four-Thirds camera is a lot easier than past Olympus models.
The Olympus E-3's Power switch is located in a familiar place for Canon prosumer SLR owners, just off the lower ...

Advantages: MP, good low noise sensor Disadvantages: high ISO NR too strong, poor kit lens, poor build quality
This is an OK camera, but
1. the kit lens is poor
2. the body quality id 'plasticky'
3. High ISO images look mush and plastic with loss of detail as the NR kicks in
4. Canon make some good pro cameras, but this isn't one!
5. Far too much use of menus needed
Pentax, Nikon and Olympus all offer better quality, especially at the amateur level. Yes Canon have some good lenses, but if you want a robust fully featured body and good glass you are going to have to spend 10X what this costs. don't kid yourself you're getting pro gear just because its a Canon.
Alternatives to look at are the Nikon D80, PentaxK10D and the Olympus E400, and don't get talked into it by the rep just because he has a lot to sell....... ...
