Digital cameras are getting cheaper and cheaper these days, and this snazzy machine fits nicely in the "affordable" end of the budget without being too cheap, or too flashy. Reasonably priced, and fantastic value considering the quality of the camera itself. With a massive 8.1 megapixels, the quality of the photos is exceptional, allowing you to take really detailed snaps of anything that takes your fancy. A whopping 11 settings aside from the 2 main ones (not to mention the video/audio recording facility) make it easy to adjust the camera to whatever situation. Within each setting you can adjust the focus with 4 different settings aside from the normal one. There's even a "flower" setting - take pictures of multi-coloured and textured flowers and it's almost guaranteed that you'll keep all of the detail that you can see with the naked eye. It's
light and portable, very eary to use, and beginners and intermediates alike can ask for nothing more from a basic daily use digital camera. It comes with a 10 second timer too, so that everyone can be included in the photo.
The settings offered are: Night Scene Landscape Flower (for capturing brightly coloured flowers in high detail) Portrait (apparently makes the skin tone of the person more healthy...) Surf & Snow (for images with dazzling backgrounds such as beaches and snow) Sport (for capturing moving images) Digital SR (high sensitivity mode for reducing blur) Kids (especially for taking pictures of kids...) Pet (for capturing pets in motion and the setting for the pet's coat can be changed) Digital Panorama (merges several pictures to create a panoramic photograph) Frame Composite (a choice of 3 frames can be put around your subject...heart, flowers, or a strange clown thing...)
Of these, my favourite has to be the DIGITAL PANORAMA MODE. I took 3 pictures of this amazing view in sections, and the camera moulds them all into one huge panoramic image. It looks truly stunning to be able to capture all of what you can see with the eye into one picture.
I've tried FLOWER MODE and have been quite impressed by the results, but some pictures can still end up looking a little blurry. You have to make sure the camera is held completely still!
VIDEO MODE is also great - you can record films as long as your batteries last, up to 25 mins with sound too. SOUND MODE offers recordings on their own, again up to 25 mins, or longer depending on your batteries.
I found that the camera doesn't work very well when taking pictures in night mode. In fact, most pictures taken at night or in the dark don't seem to turn out well for the majority. The camera has to be held very still for a period of time longer than that to take a normal photo (but less than 10 secs - I find it to be about 5 or 6 seconds before the photo is taken and the image appears on the screen) to avoid blurry imaging, and if you can master this as well as the flash option, then you might just be lucky. The mode itself recommends using a tripod on this mode to reduce blurGenerally the images on the screen are a good indication of how the photo will turn out, but I usually find they look better when displayed on a computer screen.
Despite all of these modes, I generally take most of my pictures on AUTO PICTURE, which is supposed to choose the most appropriate setting on the camera when taking the picture depending on the conditions. I'm not sure how much I trust this.
The STORAGE capacity of this camera is rubbish on it's own. On the best quality (3 stars) and the highest number of pixels (8million) you can only store TWO pictures! Use GREEN MODE (the saving energy mode) and this will double your capacity to 4 pictures. Reduce the pixels to 640, and you can take 41 pictures of the best quality available. Reduce the quality to 1 star, and you can then store 87 pictures. A digital SD memory card is pretty much essential if you want to store a reasonable number of good pictures. Using a 1GB card, you can take and store around 250 pictures of the best quality and the highest number of pixels, which doubles to 500 pictures when you use GREEN MODE
I also had problems with the batteries for a while - I was using a set of rechargeables and the battery guage on the camera was not accurately judging the amound of power in the batteries after they had just been charged. Not sure if this is a problem with the particular batteries I was using, or the guage on the camera. It works just fine with normal batteries.
Overall, I'm very happy with this camera. It takes good pictures, makes good videos and is a good all rounder if just for basic digital pictures. If you get the conditions just right though, you can end up with a stunning image. Recommended.
