...decided to go for the Pentax Optio S30 in the end. It cost me £129.90 to buy from a Jessops local store (sorry, Jessops don't sell it on-line).
First Impression:
Opening the box I found the camera, a usb link cable, a manual, a camera-to-TV cable, software, wristband, and advertisments (along with a Pentax survey).
The camera was well protected and even came with two batteries included (didn't last for more than 20 pictures, ... ...it can be argueed that Pentax could have spent less time on features and more time on battery life and loading time. However some of the features are really cool, these include color coding (only display red, green, gray, etc.) or black and white pictures. The best of all however is the fact that you can take a picture normally and then later on edit it to be only black and white, resize it, or add a sound clip to it.
Not to long ago I realized that I am simply sick and tired of running arround buying disposable cameras and then paying to much to have them printed in order to scan them back onto my computer. So I decided it was time to go for a digital camera...
I bought mine keeping in mind that it had to look good, be small/portable, support SD memory, and still be good value for money.
Having looked at a set of varietys I decided to go for the Pentax Optio S30 in the end. It cost me £129.90 to buy from a Jessops local store (sorry, Jessops don't sell it on-line).
First Impression: Opening the box I found the camera, a usb link cable, a manual, a camera-to-TV cable, software, wristband, and advertisments (along with a Pentax survey). The camera was well protected and even came with two batteries included (didn't last for more than 20 pictures, but even so nice of them to include some).
Straight away I was confussed by the wheel on top that displayed thousands of symbols (9 to be exact) of different modes I couldn't understand. However it is all explained in the manual. The basics were easy (zoom, OK, Menu, Delete, Play, etc.).
Turning it on it makes the best sounds ever (I still am not sure wether I find them funny or annoying).
Loading and Features: I must say that this camera has to be one of the slowest when it comes to loading. The Red Loading light will blink at you for a good 7 or seconds in some cases after having taken a picture. This can sometimes be a bit annoying.
When it comes to different features however it is brilliant, it can be argueed that Pentax could have spent less time on features and more time on battery life and loading time. However some of the features are really cool, these include color coding (only display red, green, gray, etc.) or black and white pictures. The best of all however is the fact that you can take a picture normally and then later on edit it to be only black and white, resize it, or add a sound clip to it.
The wheel on top I have not found to be very usefull as I only use my camera for everyday pictures, there are 3 main features I enjoy using from time to time these are: Camera: Takes pictures (duh!) Video recorder: This is great at parites, you can take fairly high quality clips in no time. Voice recorder: This I've not had to much use of but Can come in fairly handy from time to time (downisde however is that you must speak fairly loudly [although you could ofcourse always amplify the sound on your computer]).
It also clearly displayes a lot of usefull information on the screen, such as battery life, pictures left, date/time, flash, and mode. However the battery indicator is extremely poor and is not really worth relying on.
Memory: This camera has two memories, fixed, and SD Card memory. The fixed memory is only 11MB so you won't get to far with that. However the SD support is brilliant (for me at least since my other equipment are also SD compatible). I use a 128MB SD card and take pictures at a resultion of 2048 at Two Star quality level (Three Stars is the maximum but I've found two stars to be more than enough), this way I can store up to about 130 pictures on one card. NOTE: There is however one major downside of these two memory compartments. The camera can only read one memory at a time. So if you took picutres onto the fixed memory and then inserted an SD card the camera would ignore the fixed memory and you wouldn't be able to access it untill you removed the SD Card.
Conclusion: It has its faults, but on the whole it is an amazing camera. It takes amazing picutres, its durrable (I've managed to drop it once [not from to high up but on a hard table] and it still works fine)(oh and I managed to Strongbow over it as well once [not a lot]), it is light. Pentax have done a great job of having few buttons with clear pictures and easy to understand after having read the manual and played arround with it a bit. However the battery life is extremely poor, I have to change my batteries every 30-50 pictures (depending on what battery quality I buy, and wether I use the flash a lot). Also the flash is extremely bright wich not only blinds people but gives the red eye efect on the photo.
On the whole though I must say that the Pros over weigh the Cons.
Advantages: easy of use, design, AA batteries, good quality pictures Disadvantages: small image sensor 3.2 mpx, small display
I received this camera from a friend and used for several days.
Design.
Altrough the phone is on market for several time I think the design is still great, aluminium-made with great build quality.
Functions
The camera has many usefull functions, that are accessed from the 5 buttons navigational menu: white balance, different modes of focus,3 quality modes and many others
Picture Quality
From a 3.2 mpx camera (2000x1536) the quality is very ... ...indoor pictures the quality is medium, some noise. On night shots, the flash really does a good job, good pictures overall.
Batery life
Pretty good.Uses two AA / CR-V3 batteries, that can be recharged, really nice.
notes:
The viewfinder is small but improve the battery life

Advantages: Compact, takes AA batteries, loads of features Disadvantages: Long shutter delay- the time from pressing the button to taking the photo
I bought the Pentax Optio S30 because I wanted a compact camera that would fit in my pocket and would be easy to carry around, and it certainly fulfils that requirement- its very slim-lined and portable. Other features I particularly like about this camera are the fact that it takes ordinary AA batteries rather than the Li-ion ones, so it's much cheaper to power, and if you are ever stuck in a situation on the move, where your rechargable batteries ... ...up, you can just nip to the nearest shop and get some regular ones. It also has some very nifty, although not strictly necessary, 'fun' modes, such as black and white filter, panorama assist, super macro and many others. However, I have found that it is very slow at actually taking photos- there's a big time delay between pressing the button and actually taking the photo- almost 2 seconds I'd say, which is a big annoyance, especially if you're trying ...

Advantages: Incredibly stylish due to its looks and size, solid feel and construction, good quality pics Disadvantages: a bit slow on taking pictures
The Pentax Optio s30 is a brilliant camera, cramed pack full with useful features. To start of with, the size and finish of the camera is extremly impressive especially when you see the results it produces. I was looking for something of decent quality I could carry around with me but without finding it a burden - exactly what I got... with a bit more.
I found it very easy to use, while also containg complex manual settings for the more experienced ... ...very good also.
The Pentax does have its flaws, the main one being some slowness, especially recovering between shots, but I find that pre-focusing means I can get action shots perfectly easily. I was in Africa over the summer on safari and the pictures it produced where amazing quality.
The batteries that come with the camera are poor quality, but purchase some rechargables and the battery life is quite convieniant. ...

Advantages: Sleek design and multiple functions, including video and sound recording. Disadvantages: Delayed reaction of several seconds prevents candid shots.
Lucky for me I recived this camera for free when my techno-phobe mother decided is was all too complex for her. Actually mastering the basic cameria functions is relatively striaght forward after a quick flick through the manual. It has multiple functions, such as landscape, portrait, night time, flash, zoom, video and sound recording to name a few. And people never seem to stop getting excited when you turn it on and the lens pops out on its own. ... ...(including myself) who know little about photography and jab at the buttons wildly to try to get the strange symbols to go away. To those more photographically proficient it will all make perfect sense, but the camera itself will be endlessly frustrating. The slight delay, it can not be more than 3 seconds, from clicking the big silver button to the camera taking the picture may seem insignificant but it has become the bane of my photographic aspirations. ...

Advantages: Gorgeous design, weatherproofing is a plus, easy to use Disadvantages: Few override options, no sound on the video mode, loses out in the value stakes these days
, the Mju 300 is, price-wise, head to head with the Minolta G400 and Xg and the PentaxOptioS30, and in this company it is found seriously wanting. All of these other cameras feature sound in their video clip modes, power up in less than 2 seconds (the G400 powers up in a stunning 0.8 seconds from sliding the lens cover across to taking your first shot!), are smaller, lighter , and have more options. The Mju 300 was designed to be a simple to use camera, and Olympus achieved this at the expense of any manual overrides. Even the simplest model of the competition, the Dimage Xg, features the ability to select ISO speeds manually, set the metering pattern, set the white balance, etc.
These days, it is fair to say that you can get more for your money. The Mju 300 is not a bad camera, it's just that time and progress have moved on around it ...
