I needed a digital camera for part of the NVQ work that I am doing at the moment and also thought it would be a good idea for my annual leave next week. There are so many digital cameras on the market that I was at a bit of a loss which to buy.

It has an aluminium body and is very classy to look at. I have been told that the case can be scratched very easily. I have had mine now for a month and I am not the most careful of people around and there is not a scratch in sight.
By pressing the on/off button on the right hand side at the top of the camera, the zoom lens effortlessly glides outwards. Press it to off and the lens recedes back into the body. This helps to protect the lens and keeps the size of the camera to a minimum when you carry it round The lens has a 35 -105 mm range. The zoom which is both optical and digital is controlled by a button on the back of the camera letting you go from wide-angle to telephoto amazingly quickly. Optical zoom is the best because it keeps all the quality in the picture. When you use the digital zoom which kicks in automatically as you are zooming you are only enlarging the picture already on the cameras sensors and therefore loosing image quality. The optical zoom also allows you to take better pictures since it not only allows you to compose a picture of a large group of people without falling into the pond or over the edge of the cliff behind you (you must have seen it in the films) but to take a portrait shot without distorting the face of your subject.
The camera, as well as taking the usual still shots, allows you to take up to 60 seconds of video and has a sound recording facility so that you can caption the clips or still shots. With the camera, I can take macro shots of anything from about 2.5 inches, to infinity shots although you have no control over the depth of field. There is even a marine mode available. The camera can be focused both manually and automatically. These are controlled by buttons to the back of the camera next to the viewfinder. I have uploaded some examples of these below which I hope will show the quality of the camera.
To view the video or photographs on the camera, buttons next to LCD let you playback and display.
To the left hand side of the camera is a built-in flash with a red-eye reduction. It is not very strong and I would recommend that you only take shots at quite a close range if using it. Otherwise I don’t think, you will get anything at all.
The only problems with the camera were that it only has 11mb of built in memory which I found wasn’t enough and the D-L18 lithium-ion battery lets you take only about 180 pictures or spend 2 hours in playback which also is not enough. However, I had a MMC card spare from a Nokia n-gage that I don’t use any more. This was compatible with the camera and gave me a 32MB in addition to the built in memory. I had to purchase a larger battery. I managed to get one of these from e.bay costing
Attached to the camera is a small wrist strap, handy I suppose but personally don’t really use it.
The camera at best resolution will give an image quality of 4Mp which means that if you want a good quality print you will be able to go to 10” X 8” but larger than this you will begin to loose image quality
A USB and an A/V cable come with the camera You can get the camera in a kit with a tripod, a memory card and a soft case.
I bought this for £250 from Boots you can get it cheaper if you shop around.

Well Im not realy into the technical side of cameras, all I know is the more mega pixels the better! the s4 packs a more than adiquate 4 mega pixels
I have owned an s4 for around 10 months now and it must be the most idiot proof camera available just point and shoot, with its factory settings achieving quality snaps every time. There are plenty of adjustments to make if your that way inclined but Ive found you have to know what your doing or else ... ...3d photos that you look at with the supplied gogles! A time laps function so you can speed up 1 hour of sunrise into seconds. Plus the usual video, dictaphone extras you would expect from a quality camera.
I must say I was disapointed with the shutter time delay which admitadly you do find on all digital cameras, but its frustrating when your finger captures a great shot only to find the shutter lagging half a second behind! SLR's win on that front ...

Advantages: Its size! Disadvantages: Barrel distortion at widest zoom setting and some noise from the small sensor.
The S4 is my first digital still camera, and I am pleased with what I have got. It all depends on what you compare it with and what you expect. You have to realise that to get all those features in such a tiny case, some sacrifices have to be made.
Compared with 35mm, 4mp is very low (Velvia50 is the equivalent of at least 40Mp). Also, because the sensor is far smaller than the 35mm frame, the depth of field, even at full aperture (sp?) will be ... ...a problem, but blurred backgrounds in portraits may have to be done in the editing stage.
Compared to larger compacts, there are a few things to consider. Firstly, you do not have full control over the picture taking. That said, you can set the flash mode, AE pattern, focusing (manual/auto/specific point), and a few picture modes (e.g. portrait, landscape...) Also, the smaller sensor will create more noise in all but the brightest conditions with ...

There's an MC Escher drawing of a small house with a staircase on the roof that on closer inspection never ends. You get a similar feeling of endless depth when looking at the functions of Pentax's Optio S4 digital camera.
Despite being comparable in size to a pack of cards, it crams in a 3x optical zoom, a massive 1.6in TFT screen, and it takes four-megapixel images.
The S4 might be deeper than Casio's Elilim EX S2 (i reviewed earlier), but the ... ...it's multiple shooting modules and options that make the S4 a really great camera.
There are over 20 different profiles for creatively shooting a range of images, from black and white to long exposure shots. You can also tweak a range of settings, such as white balance.
Despite the large 1.6in TFT screen, the Optio S4's battery life is excellent, so you dont need to worry about taking your time to frame images when taking pictures. There's more ...

This camera is a small (3.3 x 2 x 0.8 inches), robust and reliable camera and has some of the best picture quality I've seen in any 4 MegaPixels digital camera. This camera has 3x optical zoom which for its size is very impressive though the very edges of pictures can blur with full zoom. If you especially want a camera with good quality zoom pictures then this camera is not for you.
The camera features a menu screen which will take some getting ... ...is very credible and it is very advanced technically. This camera also includes a simple cam-corder function.
However, with all these hi-tech features there has to be a couple of downfalls, and there are! Unfortunately the battery is drained very (very) quickly and so you will almost always need to carry a spare. You will also need to buy a memory card and case as these do not come included with the camera.
Overall this camera is a pretty stylish ...

The battery life is quite good even with flash
a problem with this camara is that the power button and shooting button are too close together and the wrong way ... ...camara for its size and wate and the unique lens design gives very good qulity picturs and a flush fitting lense on a camara 2cm wide.

Well there is an amazing choice of digital cameras on the market these days, both new and second hand. I thought I'd write a review on my PentaxOptios4i - I've had this for nearly 2 years and it has been a fanastic buy. You can't buy this model new anymore (it retailed at about £229) but you can pick up some second hand bargains in camera shops or on ebay or other similar auction sites.

I have been looking for a camera for 3 months and finally decided on the PentaxS4, only to be told on the day I was buying it that a new model had just been brought out - the S4i. I was going to buy the old model anyway but every sales person I spoke to said how much easier the S4i was to use and the buttons were all more durable and less plastic feeling. So I decided to go for the S4i instead.
I bought it from Jessops who price-matched what I had found on the internet which was very useful considering the S4i was £50 more. I bought it for £265 but its RRP is about £300, although I've seen it as much as £350. I wanted to buy it from Jessops because their insurance is so good, so was very pleased to hear they price-matched internet prices (except Pixmania & Amazon).
Despite its size, the camera has 4 million pixels, 3x Optical zoom ...

I bought it after checking out a few reviews myself and after owning and using it I thought I would write my own review.
Previously I was using a PentaxOptioS4i which was a great camera but after using this I couldn't go back.
At 10 megapixels the picture quality is awesome. So much so that I now can't bring myself to use the lower quality settings.
I found with other cameras that when you take a "full size" picture, then print it out at standard 6 x 4 size some detail is lost as if it is being "squashed" but the prints I get from this are so clear. It really is hard to tell that they are digital and not traditional prints.
It has such a wide range of functions it almost makes it hard to justify spending any extra on an slr.
