77Ltd - A fantastic lens.

Advantages: Sharp, Well built, Good looking.
Disadvantages: Purple fringing, Price.

The Pentax FA77mm is one of the best lenses around. It combines excellent build quality, and a small size to create a world class lens - up with the likes of Zeiss, and Leica lenses. Its has great resolution throughout its aperture range. I have used the lens on an APS-C camera, but not yet a 35mm SLR, though have heard it performs just as well on both. Although wide open the corner resolution isnt fantastic, once stopped down the resolution is high all over the shot. The bokeh (Out of focus areas) is beautifully rendered by the 77Ltd, producing smooth backgrounds and excellent areas of shallow depth of field. Colour is vibrant and strong, and there are no odd blue or orange colour casts. Purple fringing sometimes occurs on APS-C digital SLRs, as with most lenses, but only in high contrast situations (Eg. Shooting trees against the light ...

Great 2nd Lens

Advantages: Fast Focus, well built, reliable excellent performance all round
Disadvantages: Heavy, you will need a tripod

a 1.5 crop factor, that means the lens is effectively a longest zoom of 450mm. With that you can take a good picture of a car number plate from about 450 meters away (500 yards in old money). The zoom is fast enough for sports like football where you can take quality shots from all accross the field. It is also very good for the bird watchers out there! I never thought I could enthusiasticly put a a camera on a tripod and use the camera as binocular to catch some wildlife like birds, squirrels and field mice. Bear in mind that this lens is quite heavy and you will need a tripod to use it after 100mm. After 100mm you will just get too much camera shake even if you are Arnie because the slightest will get amplified by the same magnitude. You should also remember that as 75mm is it's widest angle, this lens is useless to take photos ...

Review of Sony SAL75300 - telephoto zoom lens - 75 mm - 300 mm F/4.5-5.6

Canon 75-300mm USM III - A good all-round lens but not perfect

Advantages: Speed, Appearance, Build quality, Price
Disadvantages: Picture quality at long focal distances

I have read several positive reviews about the Canon 75-300mm USM III lens but I don't share other people's enthusiasm because it is not nearly as sharp as I would expect from a Canon lens. Of course, compared to the Canon L Series lenses, this is an incredibly inexpensive item and, in its defence, I do find that my Canon EOS 50D, with it's jam-packed 15mp APS-C sensor, is very difficult to marry up with a lense to get the most out of it (unless you are prepared to spend thousands). At the close end of the focal range, the picture is crisp and sharp but unfortunately this tails off quite noticeably as the lens is extended (as does the auto-focus accuracy) and I have even taken to focusing the lens manually when it is at full extent, using the camera's magnified live-view to ensure crisp results. It is also a little slow ...
