I am an avid Pentax user/collector and had lusted after the latest offering for nearly two years. When the opportunity arose on ebay to buy I had to have it - pristine used example with lenses etc. What a beautiful product - foolproof for the older technophobe like me - scope to create for the imaginative - takes all Pentax lenses-feels and handles beautifully-I now go out and take a hundred shots where before I may have taken 1 roll of 36 at best and then waited to see if they were any good. I have become more creative/selective and aware of photo-opportunities-I can store/send by email/crop/adjust/turn into sepia/print etc all at my desk with the PC. OK so it was not brand new - £420 for the body and £100 for the Sigma 28-300 lens - what a bargain and boy what a camera. I know you can use your mobile phone but this looks and feels like a pro camera and with the add ons - flash/batterypack/filters/tripod mount - you don`t feel like a passer by at a wedding or sporting event. The quality of the photos is stunning and when they are brought up on my 19" flat screen PC it really gives you a buzz - unlike the old days of waiting for the D & P envelope of 24/36.With a basic photosuite eg Picasa 2 (free download) you can fix and fiddle to your heart`s content - even produce sepia or B/W shots. Not cheap as some say but with the saving on D/P and film it is a winner. Two months into my dream and I am still learning but still enjoying !
Advantages: Cost, Good lenses, well built Disadvantages: Software nothing special.
.... At the time of writing the D50 was about £100 cheaper than any equivalent model, EOS350 or Pentax *ist DL2. The Nikon 'Pictureproject' software is adequate but most people would recommend Adobe Photoshop over any company's in house code.
My advice is get the cheapest SLR of the three, spend your money on the best lens you can afford and the rest on photography lessons. Profesional photographers would struggle to notice the difference between the D50 and £2000+ models. A fantastic camera and one I'd definitely recommend to all but the most highly qualified photographers....

Advantages: Small, Well Priced, Plenty of Accessories, Good Quality Disadvantages: not full frame sensor
...using less power your battery will last longer giving you more shots between charges.
Body wise it is small and fairly tough- much more so than the old 300D, it is marginally smaller than Pentax's *istDs, making it the smallest in the world
It's 3FPS drive allows fairly continuous shooting, not enough for dedicated sports or action photography, but excellent for general use.
Images appear soft when printed straight from the camera (through pictbridge) not terribly soft, but sharpening through canons own software does give the images that extra bite, this unlike Nikon and other brands who sharpen images more inside the camera is a mostly unsharpened image as detail is destroyed with over sharpening- Canon take a conservative approach.
Colour and contrast however are excellent, though for really vivid photo's you may want to...

...than £600. Cameras costing more than that were certainly too complex and far too advanced for what I needed. My choices eventually narrowed down to the Pentax *ist DL, the Nikon D50 and the Canon EOS350D.
My compact digital was a Nikon model so my initial preference was for another Nikon. A big plus for the Nikon was that it took SD memory cards and I had plenty of those as they were what my compact took. The Canon had much better write-ups in most of the magazines I had read, was recommended by more people, had many more accessories widely available and was a higher number of megapixels, 8.0 compared to 6.1. It was however more expensive and the biggest disadvantage of all was that it took CF cards, of which I didn't have any. It also took a specialist rechargeable Canon battery so, if I wanted to buy a "spare", I would have to shell out...
