Advantages keeps the babe busy so I can relax for a minute, good show
Disadvantages Not on at a good time for us
In my experience it's a bad idea to go over board buying themed products when a child gets into a programme. My eldest was really into Miffy (a bunny rabbit television show for tots) and I thought it was very cute so went out and bought him some Miffy t-shirts, bedding, and sticker book. If I'd had more funds I could have got him more as stores make so much themed items. My son's room is currently a mixture of old and current fads. He has a Cars rubbish bin, in bedding a choice of Power Rangers, Ben 10 and Sponge Bob Square Pants, three different height charts, Winnie the Pooh pictures, Monsters Inc light switch cover and a bunch of other stuff. Looking beyond the fact that he is a spoilt little toad I said to myself with child number 2 that this one would not end up with all this themed junk everywhere.
Well it was a nice try ... Like many New Years resolutions of years gone by this went straight out the window when my youngest showed a liking for Peppa Pig. Thankfully it was my other half that started off the bad habit so shame on him I say!Suddenly after a weekend of Peppa Pig on the television the postman delivered a package that I wasn't expecting. It was address to my youngest so I opened it and inside was a gift-wrapped box and a note saying love daddy. I gave the baby the gift. He ripped the wrapping off in seconds flat and started screaming. It was a box set of Peppa Pig. 32 piggy shows. I've had to be a bit mean and limit the amount of watching time otherwise the babe would be starring at the big square babysitter all day long!
For those of you who have not come across Peppa yet let me introduce her. She is a little girl pig who can be found on the Nick Jr and Five television stations and is translated into about 12 different languages for viewing around the world. The show revolves around Peppa and her family. Daddy Pig, Mummy Pig, and her brother George. My son's favourite is George and his dinosaur toy. In each show there will be something else to explore with Peppa and either her family or friends. She plays dress-up, goes on vacations, plays with her friends and jumps in muddy puddles (not something I wanted him to learn but oh well). It's quite a cute show to be honest. The only thing I haven't enjoyed so much is my son's impersonation of a pig noise (and facial expression to go with it). It was cute to begin with but he does it all the time and I have to keep explaining to people why he's grunting at them!Characters:
The PigsGEORGE! http://www.nickjr.co.uk/shows/peppa/george.aspx My wee man loves George but it's been hard finding things with George on them. Everything I was finding was bright pink and had Peppa on it. I walked into a Next store the other week and my other half got really excited and called me over to where he was. The store was busy so I gave him an evil look and made my way over there with the buggy. My son noticed the find first and started jumping. I looked up to see he's found a blue jumper with George plus the dinosaur on it and a pair of slippers with George on them. Of course we then had to get them and again add to the themed products! We're a lost cause! I'm not against pink stuff for boys by any means as he has a pink stuffed animal that he sleeps with but I didn't want to be getting him tons of pink things. I guess the lack of George and boys stuff to do with the show helps me out really because it means I can't buy loads of themed bits. I did however find a George wash mitt at Sainsbury's which has joined the other bits. Hopefully he likes this show for a bit longer! I really didn't learn from my first child did I!?!
Peppa Pig is always on too early or too late for my son's routine so it's really convenient to have the DVD's and seeing as we got them off the internet for £4.99.I've only taken away a star because almost everything in the stores is bright pink but then again I am looking for stuff that isn't to do with the main character so probably a picky customer!
