I’m just about old enough to remember the days when Pepsi Cola came in a red and white can with small blue bits, rather than the rather cool all blue version which we have today, but despite the significant change in the brand image, there’s little else that has changed about this drink over the years and let me say right off, that Pepsi is the dave27 soft drink of choice. I absolutely love the stuff, and perhaps that’s why I’m so fat, I mean pleasantly big boned...

Now, doubtless you’re going to have to face all sorts of dire warnings about the damage that the stuff does to your health and the unpleasant side effects it has on your body, but it tastes nice and is very refreshing.

There is one word of warning, however, and that’s about the temperature - to be enjoyable Pepsi has to be kept ice cold. If it’s not icy fresh or (perish the thought) a little on the warm side then swigging a can is quite likely to make you feel extremely nauseous.

Mrs D goes even further than me and always sticks a can in the freezer for about 15 minutes or so before she drinks it because she can’t abide the stuff if it’s not on the verge of freezing.

This caused a significant problem one time when she was working as a temp at Fylde Borough Council. She stuck a can of Pepsi in the freezer some time in the afternoon and completely forgot about it. It stayed in there all night and there was the inevitable explosion, resulting in a pretty nasty mess. ‘Sfunny, she never mentioned it and left the job soon afterwards...

The dave27 clan really adores Pepsis, although us nasty grown ups steadfastly refuse to allow the dave27-ettes to enjoy more than the very occasional sample because we don’t believe that it’s very good for them - nasty old hypocrites, us….

Actually, the effects of any carbonated drink on Bethany are pretty spectacular in that she starts collapsing helplessly into a chuckling mass of humanity with which there is no reasoning - in short any fizzy drink sends her nuts and Pepsi has by far the most significant effect, rendering her incoherent for hours on end. It also makes Lewis even more objectionable and unpleasant than normal, so self preservation and greed dictates that our regular order of cans remains strictly earmarked for our consumption.

We tend to buy the stuff in 12 can packs, apart from when we can manage to get 24 can trays and that makes it an awful lot cheaper than any other way of buying it. My thanks to Mrs D for this detailed rundown on the prices: in a motorway service station 60p a can, normal sales price per can (as on the red band at the top) 39p, Safeway £3.99 for a 12 pack, Tesco £2.88 for a 12 pack, local bargain store A&M £6.00 for a 24 can tray, local bargain store £4.80 for a 24 can tray (the champions), but a bit scummy and you can't always get them there.

As a soft drink, Pepsi is extremely refreshing and pleasant, much more so than the apparently more popular Coke, which I find a bit sickly and bloating, with a less enjoyable taste. Diet Pepsi I can take at a push, or the Pepsi Max version, but Mrs D normally insists that neither type crosses our threshold. She also continually embarrasses us when we’re out for a drink or a meal when she screams “Pepsi, no lemon, and make sure it’s proper Pepsi, not that foul diet stuff.” It always ensures she gets plenty of funny looks from the staff after she’s tried that one, so there’s never any chance of doing a runner without paying…

Ingredients: Carbonated water, sugar, colour (caramel E150d), phosphoric acid, caffeine, flavourings. My understanding is that there is also some sort of gum in there too, and if there is, good old Osama Bed Linen owns the rights, so we should really boycott the stuff - wait a minute, let's assume the gum's in Coke, in which case there's just one more reason to prefer Pepsi.
