Imagine my relief when I found out that Pepsi made a low calorie drink aimed squarely at the male market. Yes I know that it is perfectly legal for us chaps to consume diet Pepsi or diet Cola but I always found it a little embarrassing asking for the aforementioned beverages. I always felt that somehow my masculinity was being called into question if I entered a shop and picked up the diet version of any drink, real men simply don’t consume diet drinks. That is until Pepsi Max hit the shelves.

When Pepsi Max was launched the adverts featured young sporty chaps performing all sorts of extreme pastimes such as bungee jumping, skateboarding and BMX racing. That’s the sort of image I want when I buy a drink. Although it’s fair to say my days of BMX riding are well behind me and the thought of attaching a piece of elastic to my ankles and jumping from a great height makes me break out in a cold sweat, if I walk along the street swigging Pepsi Max people are bound to think “there’s a man who obviously lives life to the full and is not afraid to try something a little daring”. I can live with that sort of adulation from my fellow beings.

So, a go getting, fashionable drink needs a decent look, and the can is suitably trendy. Royal blue and black the predominant colours arranged haphazardly on the can with the Pepsi logo and MAX writ large in a red graffiti style. Maximum taste – No sugar is the proud boast at the base of the can, which comes in the standard 330ml size. As with most canned drinks the recommendation is “best serve chilled”. Not wishing to offend those nice people at Britvic I loaded my Pepsi Max into the fridge to cool down.

It is fair to say that if natural ingredients are what you look for in your soft drinks Pepsi Max should be avoided. The only natural ingredient is water which has been carbonated. A couple of artificial sweeteners and a clutch of colours and preservatives make up the mix. Pepsi Max also contains a source of Phenylalanine.

And so to the taste, a sip of Pepsi Max produces the familiar fizzing sensation on the tongue - When the drink is left to stand in the mouth it actually felt slightly uncomfortable as the bubbles fizz and pop, almost a burning sensation. The real taste develops after the drink is swallowed; a vague fruity taste is quickly enveloped by the more familiar caramel type flavour synonymous with most Cola type drinks. The sweetness of the drink is just about right, not too much of an artificial sweet flavour as can often be the case with diet drinks.

On finishing the drink my teeth felt slightly strange, sort of dry and not dissimilar to the feel obtained when cleaning them with baking soda type toothpastes. The inevitable windy pops swiftly erupted from my mouth about a minute after I had drained the can but my stomach still had a slightly bloated feel afterwards, something I do not get when consuming other fizzy drinks.

For my second can, and purely for research purposes you understand, I used a can of Pepsi Max as a mixer with some scotch. The remit of any mixer should be to compliment but never overpower the liquor to which it is added and Pepsi Max performed well in this role. The Sweet taste of Pepsi Max sat comfortably with the sour taste of the scotch to produce a thoroughly enjoyable drink, the Pepsi Max happy to take the back seat in this liquid collaboration.

So if you like Cola type drinks and are not too worried that the ingredients of Pepsi Max read like a chemistry text book, this could be the drink for you. I purchased my Pepsi Max in a twelve pack at Tesco, currently on special offer at £2.69 it usually retails around the £3 mark. As with all fizzy drinks you should avoid drinking them to excess, purely for the sake of your teeth. Pepsi Max is a perfectly palatable drink to enjoy on its own or as a mixer.

And well done to the marketing men at Pepsi/Britvic for enabling me to maintain my masculinity when trying to cut down on high sugar drinks, real men shouldn’t drink diet drinks – but real men can drink Pepsi Max with pride.
