Advantages: Interesting concept, plus it has sequels Disadvantages: The story is predictable.
RickRiordan's PercyJackson and the Olympians: The LightningThief, is a book for younger readers, probably between the age of 9 to 15. The font size is big and the line spacing is double, to make it easy for reluctant readers. This book is about Greek mythology, in a modern day context. PercyJackson is the main protagonist in this story and he is discovered to be a son of Poseidon, one of the three most powerful gods. Although he is initially sceptic about the existence of Greek gods in the modern era, the adventure he faces throughout the book decides him. Along the way he makes both friends and enemies. The book's plot isn't all that different from mainstream stories, but the characters and the concept of Greek mythology in this modern era make it worth reading. Fans of greek mythology will enjoy this book. ...
Advantages: an exciting, educational read (a rare but winning combination) Disadvantages: might be a little confusing with no prior knowledge of Greek mythology
RickRiordan clearly has an excellent knowledge of his topics (Greek Mythology and American teenagers, that well known combination) and he presents them well, in an adventure that pulls you along from one unnerving encounter with monsters and heroes to the next.
I enjoyed it very much and my 13-year old son is liking it too. I would say that it is probably going to apeal more to boys than girls, as the main protagonist is a boy, but there are also strong, adventurous female characters in the series, for girls to identify with.
Clearly this book would appeal children with an interest in/knowledge of Greek Mythology, but I think for anyone learning about Ancient Greece, this would provide some great "light relief" and would possibly help the student to remember a bit about the bewildering number of gods, heroes and monsters. ...
Advantages: easy story to get into, loveable characters Disadvantages: book is quite hard to find in stores
This is the third book in RickRiordan's series based on Greek mythology.
first book (the lightening thief) - PercyJackson is the son of the Poseidon (sea God) thus the reason why the dark side of Greek mythology want him dead e.g. Hades, The Fury, etc. A lad called Grover has been assigned the job of rescueing Percy from them and to take him back to camp half blood (place for all children who have been discovered to have a parent who is a god).
The Titans curse plot - Percy is sent a distress call by his friend Grover so naturally he and his friends to go his rescue... in his mums car. Grover has found another 2 half bloods called Bianca and Nico de Angelo at a military school, they need to be rescued but the headteacher (Dr Thorn) isnt all he appears to be and soon percy and his friends find themselves battling the manticore ...
