Absolutely fantastic. Nothing beats the first person shooter action of Perfect Dark. Rareware’s latest masterpiece comes in the shape of one game, starring Joanna Dark, with a list of features and extras that would stretch to the moon and back, no, really. I can’t even put into words how great this game is. You really have to buy it yourself and find out. Please, I beg you to buy this game!
The back of the box neatly sums up the story “A corporation is planning a conspiracy against mankind. A single woman dares to face the threat: That woman is Joanna Dark.” That’s it. But that is all it takes to pull you into this mind blowing game!! The one player mode allows you to progress through levels (like Goldeneye) on three different difficulty settings (Agent, Secret agent, & Perfect agent). There are 17 main missions all set on amazingly designed levels and against an incredibly detailed plotline. There are mission objectives to be completed, which get added to and harder as the difficulty increases. There is also the ability
to go on the shooting range and test all the guns you have unlocked so far, test all equipment, practice combat, and catch up on the story in case you missed it. Just for one player it is a wonderfully involving adventure, and as close to playing a movie that you are likely to get at the moment.
There are over 40 new pieces of weaponry and you can use some of the old Goldeneye weapons after completing certain levels. Those seemingly impossible ‘time cheats’ are back in all their glory to test your nerve and skill and push your controller stick to it’s very limits. As well as this, there are extra one player levels to complete when you finish the game, including one very entertaining one where you get to play as the evil bad guy of the game ‘Mr Blonde’, and go an attack a building of women guards.
And of coarse, there’s a multiplayer. With a lot to live up to after the very successful Goldeneye multiplayer set-up, Rare has pulled out all the stops to go for the ultimate in multiplaying excitement. You can pick from a list of arenas, which starts off at a reasonable size and then just increases to be as long as your arm when you complete one player levels and the ‘challenges’. The challenges are special. The game sets up a specific multiplayer game, one arena, a set of weapons, and an objective (of which there are also many), and you have to win. Simple and very effective, you can play on your own or as a team with 2,3 or 4 of you against the game itself. As already mentioned, completing these successfully gives you access to new arenas and set-ups. It’s a very clever way of making you play all of the game, and you will, believe me. You can actually play multiplayer games on your own with the option of adding up to 8 CPU controlled ‘simulants’, which will happily be set up to any difficulty and will play against you and/or you and your mates. So, in actual fact it is possible to have 12 people in a multiplayer match. These people can be organised into teams against each other, and the human players have detailed control of any simulants on their team through commands like ‘protect’ and ‘hold position’. I could go on and on, but its something you have to experience to fully appreciate how much work has gone into this game.
Along with an ear busting soundtrack filled with tension and excitement, and presented (if required) in Dolby surround sound, as well as the options to use widescreen picture for large TV’s, you know this is special. The graphics are wonderful, and I was shocked when I found out that I didn’t even have the hi-res mode on!! It looks great without it, and there is absolutely no slowdown. Add hi-res, and things can slow if it gets too hectic (a 12 player battle for example), but it is generally flawless. Perfect Dark can also boast over half an hour of movie cut-sequences, which can be watched in one go once the game is complete, like a film. Speech is also a big part of the film, with cries of “Hey you!” and “We’ve got a contact” from all angles. You’re practically living this game.
I’d like to say that I’d mentioned it all, but I haven’t even picked up on half of it. It may seem unbelievable, but once you’ve played Perfect Dark, you may see what I mean. There is way too much to comment on it all, and most of it can’t be justified in writing, so I won’t even try. I’d better note that you will need an expansion pak to play a lot of the game in full, so get out there and buy one, cause if there is one game that you should own its this! To sum up: Buy, Play, Enjoy, because as the game states itself, Perfect dark is forever.
