When I first heard about Rare dropping the license to the James Bond games was horrified to my very soul. How could they be so stupid? Goldeneye at the time was the best shoot-um-up out. How could they do this?
But after months, no years of waiting and receiving little trickles of information from Rare we were awarded for our patience. We got the masterpiece that was Perfect Dark...Great Stuff!
If you like Goldneye, you will love this. And with the fact the 30% of it is from Golden eye you will feel right at home.
~~~~Plot/Story~~~~ You play as Joanna Dark, a member of the highly secretive Carrington Institute. You are assigned to infiltrate the DataDyne Corporation. The Carrington Institute have been tipped off that they are involved in some alien conspiracy, in an effort to produce advanced weapons. You are sent in to retrieve Dr.Caroll (the informer) at all cost. As you continue through the many. Many levels you become more and more involved
in a very complicated plot. Involving 2 alien races that are sworn enemies. And the best part, many many shoot um ups. Hehe!
~~~Gameplay~~~~ Rare hit gold with the Goldeneye engine, so obviously they wouldn’t of changed it a lot. It is the same engine. But don’t worry. The game looks completely different. Apart from the view point that is. The game contains 17 extremely good, action-packed and very addictive levels. That’s single player. But after completing certain task and levels you get 4 more hidden levels. The game is set in 2023, and because of alien technology Rare had no restriction in coming up with a ride range of weapons and objects.
Weapons-All the standard human weapons are nothing special. You got your basic machine guns, pistols and knifes etc... But as you proceed through the levels more weapons are released. The Skedar weapons are by far the best; probably the most well know weapon in the game is the FarSight. The FarSight has the ability to see through walls and lock on to heat signatures, then fires an energy blast straight at them, DEAD. But, in my opinion by far the best weapon on the game is the Slayer Rocket launcher. On one side your basic Rocket launcher. You know that sort, big bang bang. Then in secondary mode, this weapon comes into its own. Fly-by. Great! You simple fire the rocket and then you take control. Guiding it were even you wont. Find your target and BANG!! There dead. You can even brake to go round the corners. Other alien weapons are just your basic energy shooting weapons. But they can do some serious Damage.
~~~Multi-Player~~~~ Now you might ask "why had he put multi-player under its own heading?" Answer: Quite simply. Perfect dark has the BEST multi-player mode on all format of console. Generally the same as Goldeneye. 4 players on one screen. But then with Perfect Dark. You can have a multi-player battle on your own. Has he gone crazy you ask? Well...yes, but its still true. You can play against "Sims" computer generated multi-player simulants. You can set these from as easy as pie...to deadly, if you want to test your self. Great Stuff!
Apart from the normal multi-player battle mode. You can have challenges. Were you have to "capture the hill" for example, were one player stays in a specially marked zone for so long. If he stays there for the time allowed, then he gets a point. Everyone else is trying to kill him. Other challenges include "hold the brief case" same sort of thing. Also includes are 3 multi-player arenas from Goldeneye. The Fecilty, Complex and the temple. And then 13 other arenas. All great for a battle.
~~~~Graphics~~~~ As I have mentioned before the Perfect Dark engine is the same, more or less, as the one used for Goldeneye. But everything had been generally improved. This includes graphics. Everything had been upgraded to the next level. Characters look more real and move more realistically. Levels and multi-player arenas are bigger and look better. Perfect Dark has one thing over Goldeneye. An Expansion Pack is required this improves the game no-end. Everything in this game is in such great detail. The weapons fire more realistically and dead characters die more realistically. Everything is just more.... realistic!
~~~~Conclusion~~~~ This game is much better than Goldeneye, so if you like that you will LOVE this. It has the best multi-player mode out there, and an outstanding single player mode. Need I say any more?
I've just bought this and am waiting to find out all of it's functions before writing. It's so big!! The weapons are amazing - have you used the fly-by-wire missiles - they're fantastic!!
Good well written op as well.
Perfect Dark is easily one of the best games on the 64. I hop the sequel is as good on the gamecube. Excellent review
