would be madness to struggle. And from then on, its such a roller-coaster ride that its as much as you can do to put it down before youve reached the very last word. After years of dealing with abused children and their families and working her damnedest to bring the perpetrators to justice, assistant district attorney Nina Frost takes a while to recognise the signs of abuse in her only child. When five-year-old Nathanial stops speaking and finally, through sign language, identifies his abuser, Nina takes the law into her own hands. And so begins a fast and furious tale of twists and turns--just when you think youve got it covered, you move at right-angles and a new reality emerges. Perfect Match delivers what Picoult fans would expect--intelligent, polished writing that feels so real and natural you might forget its fiction. Once again, she covers the familiar themes of love--here specifically parent and partner relationships--and what happens to ordinary people when the extraordinary turns their world upside-down. Her research is as impeccable as ever--Nina is believable as a DA and the court-room scenes feel like the real thing. The everyday details of modern family life are set against the life-shattering events that ordinary people come to believe they are immune from as Picoult explores the boundaries of decency, bravery and betrayal and the consequences of believing, if only for a split second, that you and your family deserve more. A gripping read, but sadly unsatisfying--Picoult tries too hard to tie the threads and ends up losing hard-earned sympathy. ---Carey Green

As always Jodi has researched the topic well. She has taken a topical subject and written an excellent account of it. She includes twists, which seem so unrealistic, but due to her indepth research manages to make them viable.
The book tells the story of how a family deals with the terrible discovery that their son has been sexually abused. The mother works in the legal system and knows how often it fails the children that it is trying to protect. The book shows her drastic need to protect her child, and the struggle for the rest of the family to understand this response. It tells of how things which should be accurate can go wrong and the effects of making your judgements based on these facts, and how the family come through the other side, will it be together, or will it break the family apart?
Jodi shows how people can act in completely different ways when all they want is the same thing....the best for their child.
The are parts of the book were it is obvious to the reader that characters are jumping to completely the wrong conclusion. In parts this makes it equally obvious what is going to happen later in the book. In some ways this spoilt it for me slightly, as I like the fact that normally Jodi Piccoults writing keeps me in suspense, which in turn keeps me turning pages long after my bedtime to see what happens next. Although that was a slight let down, it did still keep me turning the pages though, as I wanted to know how the character would be alerted to the mistake, what damage that mistake had done to the already fragile balance of events, and whether they would be able to put things right in the end.
The Hook:
As with many of Jodi Piccoults books, I think I find the style and depth in which they are wriiten a big part of the hook. The stories are most definately fictional, but yet the writer puts so much research into her books, that they also include so much fact too. With each book that I have read by this author I have learnt something new, whether it be how DNA testing works, how trials are judged, or the various festivals celebrated in the pagan calender, and the significances to the rituals (Salem Falls) I also find the fact that she writes about such topical subjects a huge hook too. In this book she writes about Murder, Child abuse, Adultery, and a childs reaction and recovery to/from trauma. She tells the story from each characters perspective, and there are various twists and turns to the plot to keep you on your toes, and to keep your interest.
A short while before I read this book, the church was very much in the media regarding the topic on which this book is based, which again made the read highly topical and emotive.
The Characters:
The mother... Whether you are a mother yourself or not, you can feel and imagine this poor womans torment at the discovery of what her son has undergone. Due to Jodi's skillful writing you can understand exactly what is going through this womans head, and I'm sure that when you read the book ou will condone this womans actions and be willing her to suceed in her mission. She works in the legal system, and knows just how often it fails those that it ois there to protect. This drives the behaviours and reactions of the mother and causes her to take drastic action to try to protect her son.
The father...Again, you are given the tools to understand exactly how this man feels. You can imagine him trying his best to keep his family together through this testing time. Trying to keep his wife from letting her hysteria drive the family apart, and trying to do what is best for his child. Having to face uncertainty, and decide whether to forgive his wife for her various actions to do what she believes is best for her family. The father, not having seen the things that his wife has seen cannot understand her reactions, and attempts to stay calm, putting his faith in the system.
The Son...You are also told parts of the story from the childs view too. You see that he is confused and doesn't know what has happened, as a child would be. You can see that he has worries that it is him that has done wrong, and you are shown how in his young mind, the actions of his family help to confirm this, in a way that you would not have imagined before reading the story.
Recommended:
I would definately recommend this book. It deals with some shocking and nasty topics, so for anyone who would be disturbed by these things, then maybe I would suggest giving it a miss, but with the research that goes into the writing, anyone who can stomach the thought of such gruesome topics, I would definately recommend. It is a gripping read, dealing with modern contraversies, in an openminded and sensitive way.
Price:
The book cost my £8.89 from a wholesaler (see my earlier review on COSTCO), but I think that it is only about £9.00 from ASDA, as they seem very competative with their book prices.
Advantages: Difficult subject handled exceptionally well Disadvantages: none
Since reading My Sister's Keeper I have made a point of trying to get my hands on anything I can by Jodi Picoult. Her books have kept me enthralled each time I have picked one up and this one is no exception.
***The Background***
Jodi Picoult, to date, has written 13 novels beginning with her first, way back in 1992 entitled Songs from the Humpback Whale. From then on she has continued to write best selling novels as well as raising three children ... ...though in this thought provoking and often difficult at times to read book, which was published in 2004.
***The Story***
This story is all about Nina Frost, her husband Caleb and her 5-year-old son Nathaniel. Nina is a district attorney who specialises in prosecuting child molesters, something that is very frustrating as she knows that often the child is not strong enough to testify and that without physical evidence, the offender will hardly ever ...

Advantages: Excellent story, good characters Disadvantages: none
This is the first book I have read by Jodi Picoult and I chose it as a result of reading lots of positive reviews about her. I was not disappointed!
'Perfect Match' tells the story of Nina Frost and what happens to her when she discovers that someone has harmed her son in the worst possible way. The story follows her discovery of the truth, her immediate actions and the enormous consequences which affect not only Nina but her family as well.
To ... ...to much away would be to say that this story takes place in Maine, USA, where Nina Frost is a very successful prosecuting attourney. She is married to Caleb, a man who builds walls and paths, and they have one son, Nathaniel.
One morning, Nathaniel suddenly becomes mute. The parents take him to a psychiatrist where it becomes apparent that he has been interfered with. As Nathaniel cannot speak, the doctor helps him to sign which seems to give him ...

...complicated twists - and, happily, Perfect Match is no exception. The story centres around Nina Frost, a District Attorney who works prosecuting people on behalf of the state of Maine. She has come across many sexual abuse cases involving children and knows better than anyone how the law works: it often doesn't. Nina is already frustrated at the legal system that virtually ignores statements from children, who must undergo an arduous competency hearing ... ...bound to be heartbreaking and Perfect Match is no exception. Picoult explains, in an interview in the back of the book, that she thought it was important to portray the full horror of child abuse and the effect it has on Nathaniel and I agree wholeheartedly. It was difficult to read at times, but Picoult is never unnecessarily graphic and treats the topic with the respect and sensitivity it deserves.
Apart from her taste for fantastic stories, Picoult's ...

Boring Stuff:
Title: Perfect Match
Author: Jodi Picoult
Price: £7.99
Publisher: Hodder Paperback ISBN: 978-0340897225
Pages: 416 Basic Plot:
Once again Jodi Picoult has picked a controversial issue to write a novel on. On this occasion it's sexual abuse and murder. But that's only the outside of the novel. That's what you see if you are only looking at the barest outlines of the plot. Because this story is far more about a mother who ... ...far should a mother go to protect her child? Beyond the law? And the other main issue is the American Justice system, and how it so often works on the side of the offender rather than the victim...particularly in cases involving child abuse...
Anyhow, Nathaniel Frost - Nina Frost's 5 year old son - suddenly stops talking. As in stops talking point blank. Nothing can convince him to let a word slide through his lips...so Nina - a high flying court ...

The Perfect Match
This is another great read by Jodi Picoult. After reading many of her books I purchased this one although knowing that the subject matter would make for difficult reading - after all - how many of us really and truely want to go out and read about child abuse. Yep, this fiction is centred around child abuse. However, as always Picoult manages to combine difficult subjects into her fiction leaving many thought provoking thoughts ... ...cover, amazingly fast!
I don't want to ruin the story line for those yet to read this book, but as always certain details are on the back cover of the book so I'm not giving away too much if I stick largely to that detail!
Nina Frost is an assistant district attorney, and a mum to 5-year old Nathaniel. Her job routinely involves prosecuting cases that tear families apart. She discovers her son has been sexually abused and now it is her own family ...

Advantages: Highly addictive well written story. Disadvantages: Couldn't put it down so didn't get anything done.
even more addictive. I think the idea of bringing the both into this one novel works really well and their relocations are described really convincingly.
This is unbelievably the ninth book by JodiPicoult that I have read and I have to say that I?m looking forward to reading the others. If you haven?t read any of this author?s books yet then I urge you to go out and get this one. It really is one that will keep you reading right to the last word.

When Colin seen the tv coverage of his daughter, he feels that his daughters episodes are caused by her Mother and initiates legal proceddings to have full custody of Faith which tests Mariah strength.
Opinion -
I am a big fan of JodiPicoult having read My Sisters Keeper, PerfectMatch, Mercy, amongst others. I love her style of writing and the way the book draws your attention so much that you cant put it down. Her characters are well thought out and you actually feel like you know them.
However on first picking up 'Keeping Faith ...
Advantages: Interesting issues to debate, superb characters Disadvantages: Plot problems, doesn't realise full potential
Salem Falls reminded me of another of JodiPicoult?s books, PerfectMatch; perhaps partly because it?s a novel that doesn?t realise its full potential, but also because it deals with the difficult topic of sexual abuse and false accusation, albeit in very different circumstances. This time, the main character is not the victim, but the accused. Jack St Bride arrives in the small New Hampshire town of Salem Falls in a taxi. He has ill-fitting clothes and little money, following an 8 month prison sentence and a reluctance to return to Loyal, his former home.
He was convicted of sexual assault, a plea bargain that his lawyer recommended he take despite being innocent. He was accused of raping a teenage girl at the school where he taught history and coached soccer, the main evidence being her diary. Although the prison sentence was short ...
