Persuasion - Jane Austin Easily enticed to read this oneÖ I have read Pride and Prejudice and; of course, I loved it. This prompted me to read another of Jane Austenís works and after reading positive reviews I decided on this one. Easy to get hold of, as it is considered to be a classic, ... Read review

Northanger Abbey, & Persuasion, - Jane Austen

Northanger Abbey, & Persuasion, - Jane Austen

This volume represents the earlier and the later Jane Austen. Northanger Abbey belongs to ... more

the former period; Persuasion was her last
novel. The spur to the writing of Northanger Abbey
was the existence of novels like The Mysteries of
L'dolpho by Mrs Radcliffe which had set a fashion.
They were full of Gothic qualities, of mystery and
suspense, set in old castles amidst gloomy scenes
that accentuated the 'horrors'. Jane Austen in
Northanger Abbey gently satirized this class of
fiction and gave us a delightful heroine in
consequence: a creature of radiance who tries to
interpret life by false romantic associations
until disillusioned by the hero.By the time Jane
Austen wrote Persuasion the humour had become more
studied, the mood autumnal. Edmund Blunden wisely
observed that the novelist could not have depicted
an Anne Elliot here without being an Anne herself
at one time or another. Persuasion is the 'most
beautiful and candid anatomy of woman's love'. It
also reveals in its pages a deeper note than is
sounded in any of the other books; giving more
than a passing hint of personal grief and
loneliness. ' We may look through the happy ending
of Anne's story at the tears of the
authoress.'There are scenes in Lyme Regis of an
engaging beauty and open-air freshness, matched
with the formal splendours of Kellynch Hall in
Somersetshire, where Sir Walter lived ' a man who,
for his own amusement, never took up any book but
the Baronetage; there he found occupation for an
idle hour, and consolation in a distressed one'.

Spineless Classics Persuasion Jane Austen complete text poster

Spineless Classics Persuasion Jane Austen complete text poster

Jane Austen's last book, Persuasion was published after her death. Its themes more ... more

thoughtful, its message less playful than previous
works, here we have a book more concerned with the
consequences of giving in to societal pressures
and the fruits of revisiting doors thought closed
for good. Austen passed away at the age of 41.
This is her farewell note, perhaps a parting word
of advice from a talent this world could not keep
for long.

Persuasion Review with images

AdvantagesIt's an Austen classic - it was a pleasure to read

DisadvantagesTook a few pages to adjust to the sentence structure

"...Expectations and, of course, persuasion are themes that you would expect with the class structure of the families in the prose. It was interesting, though frustrating, to imagine being restricted and judged by others in relation to your acquaintances - being scrutinised to see if you were being seen in areas and with people who where worthy of the family importance. When Mr Wentworth is young he is considered by Lady Russell as a bad match for Miss ..." Read review

I'm persuaded of the worth of this book

AdvantagesAbsorbing story

DisadvantagesNot as humorous as Austen's earlier work

"...had been completed in 1798, Persuasion had been finished only two years before, in 1816. It is more subdued than Austen's previous novels, particularly the youthful Northanger Abbey (especially as both are set partly in Bath), but it is still a very enjoyable novel. Persuasion tells the story of 27-year-old Anne Elliot, daughter of the vain Sir Walter Elliot, and sister to the haughty Elizabeth and selfish Mary. Several years before the story began, ..." Jane Austen's well respected for a reason...

Advantagesthought provoking, describes character well, good story line

Disadvantagessome people may not feel themes as relevant in current lifestyles

"...it a great handbag book. Persuasion (Iím not sure if itís just this edition) also has a different ending, which replaces chapter 10 and 11. I found it really interesting to see what else it could have been. ..." Read review

A wonderful love story

AdvantagesBest love story in fiction

DisadvantagesNone

"...new. And of them all, Persuasion is the one I love most. It's not easy to say why. The novel lacks the champagne sparkle of Pride and Prejudice, the maturity and structure of Emma, the exuberant fun of Northanger Abbey. It certainly does not have the intriguing dark elements you find in Mansfield Park. So what is it ? In the first place, the characters get around a bit, which is unusual in an Austen novel. There are nice vignettes of Bath and ..." Read review

Sheer perfection from the wonderful Miss Austen

AdvantagesAnother Austen masterpiece

DisadvantagesNone

"“Persuasion”, one of six completed novels by Jane Austen, though written in 1815-16, was not published until 1818, a year after its author’s death at the age of forty-one. The story centres on the Elliot family: Sir Walter and his three daughters. Sir Walter, a widower, is a vain, snobbish individual whose main – indeed, only – reading matter is the entry concerning himself in the Baronetage. His haughty, unmarried ..." Read review

Product Information for "Persuasion - Jane Austen" »

Manufacturer's product description

At twenty-seven, Anne Elliot is no longer young and has few romantic prospects. Eight years earlier, she had been persuaded by her friend Lady Russell to break off her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a handsome naval captain with neither fortune nor rank. What happens when they encounter each other again is movingly told in Jane Austen's last completed novel. Set in the fashionable societies of Lyme Regis and Bath, "Persuasion" is a brilliant satire of vanity and pretension, but, above all, it is a love story tinged with the heartache of missed opportunities.
