The BBC did an adaptation of this book a few years ago starring Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds which is really good if you ever get the chance to watch it.

The central character Anne Elliot at first appears to be a weak one, always bowing to other's opinions on what to do and how to act. Although her family is at face value a wealthy one her father and sister have managed to fritter away most of the fortune since her mother's death years previously. A close family friend has been the only true guardian she has had since her mother's death, and has had a particularly strong influence in her life, persuading her twice to refuse proposals of marriage. The first refusal was to a young naval officer who at the time had little money or prospects and was not deemed suitable. It is hinted that the second refusal of a gentleman farmer (whom her youngest sister married instead) was for these reasons, but as you read the book it is probably more likely that Anne never got over her first love.

Six years after their parting, Anne and Captain Wentworth are thrown together again and circumstances have changed. He has made his fortune on the high seas, and the Elliots have been forced to relinquish their home for financial reasons and are renting it to Captain Wentworth's sister and husband.

Things of course do not run smoothly for either of them, with each seemingly entertaining the attentions of others, and with only Anne still harbouring a 'high regard' for Captain Wentworth.

I'm sure you can guess the outcome (particularly if you've ever read any of her other books!), but it's good to see not only the central character get what she deserves in the end as you grow to like her quiet strength and character. There are plenty of sub-plots involving her family, and twists & turns to keep you interested.
