The second part of the dollanganger series proves only to be as brilliant as the first. The children have escaped thier prison, but the dark horror of all that happened to them in the attic never leaves thier minds. And it is due to those memories which are permanantly in thier minds that engulfs cathy with a great need for revenge. Revenge against her mother and revenge against her grandmother.

Compared to flowers in the attic, Cathy is given a lot more attention in this book, and she is no longer the sweet and innocent girl who made paper flowers in the attic schoolroom with her brothers and sister. Cathy goes from man to man, trying to escape her brother's love and her need to return it. She runs from herself, the horror and the guilt that all taint her childhood.Cathy breaks hearts left, right and centre, without healing her own.

The children's saviour Paul Sheffield, was one of cathy lovers (and second husband), he is also thier legal gaurdian. After treating little Carrie for poisoning shortly after thier escape from Foxworth Hall, he pitied the thin weak children that they had become, so he opened up his home and his heart to them, only to be seduced by cathy, snubbed by Christopher, but loved by Carrie. As fate would have it, Paul is a doctor, with money, and he sends Chris off to college to become a doctor too, Cathy gets ballet lessons and goes on to fulfill her dream of becoming a great ballerina. Carrie eventually gets better, and attends school. But she gets tormented. She is so small due to the lack of sunshine , fresh air and nutritiuos food in the attic, that she looks abnormal.

There is also her first husband, Julian Marquette, another ballet dancer. Cathy is with him until the day he dies, although he is very abusive. He is the father of her first born son, Jory.

And then of course comes Bart Winslow. Who just happens to be the man her mother married while they were in the attic. This is her revenge. In her grandfather's will it stated that if it were ever found out that any children were produced from Cathy's mother and father's marrige then her mother would lose all her inheritance. Bart winslow was the grandfathers lawyer. Cathy becomes pregnant by Bart winslow, and gives birth to her second son Bart.

In this novel cathy gets revenge on her mother, grandmother and herself. And as the end of the second book nears, Cathy is widowed twice, has two sons and still has a incestiuos relationship with her brother. Christopher has fulfilled his dreams of becoming a doctor, And carrie commits suicide.

Petals on the wind is a poignant, moving tale of the three little mice who once lived in the attic, trying to find inner peace, artistic fulfillment and true love. You will not be disappionted with part two.
