1) The brakes on the car went down to next to nothing and my stopping distance was near enough half a mile (well not exactly, but they were dangerous).
Outcome: This problem was fixed with new break discs, pads and bleeding the breaks.
2) The car started jerking one day and over-reving when stationary. The speed-o-meter was up and down like a yo-yo. It sounded like ... ...lights, but in fact I didn't even have my foot on the accelerator!
Outcome: This problem is yet to be fixed, mainly due to the fact that whenever I take it down to a garage, the problem stops. I've had lots of advice on what the problem may be including, dirt in the carb and fuel system (although cleaning them out did nothing), a problem with the timing belt (although would a car still be able to run properly with this problem?) and ... more
When I decided to get a new car, I knew it had to be a Peugeot. I finally bought one and part exchanged my old Volkswagen Polo (my first ever banger) and I was so pleased with the result. It was an 'L' registration, 1.4L XT and cost me only £2600 part exchange. There are so many positive things about my 106 (which over-shadow the negative) and it is a very nice car to drive.
*************************
Handling/Steering:
The steering is unbelievibly easy, the ride is smooth, and the engine is so quiet that it makes you think whether the car is actually still running (compared to the Polo anyway!).
Unlike my old car it is very nippy when you put your foot down and it moves through the gears like a knife through butter. Although it is pretty nippy when you put your foot down, going from 50-70mph is a very tough job, which takes about 10 seconds in it'self. Therefore, it's anyone's guess how long it takes to do 0-60!
The car does struggle to get up some inclines on motorways, so you find yourself going from 70 down to anything from 45 upwards. Hills are not a problem in second gear, although it struggles in third and fourth on 40-50mph roads.
*************************
Fuel Consumption:
The car does about 35-40 miles to the gallon (give or take a few miles). It runs on Unleaded, which is cheaper than four star and diesel in most petrol stations. There is also a slightly better performance when Super Unleaded is used, in which the 50-70mph mark is an easier task.
*************************
Spaciousness/comfort:
The car is quite spacious for a hatchback and the 5 doors makes it look suprisingly bigger. The boot space is average, so you don't want to do too much shopping down Tesco in it!, however, the back seats fold down to make the boot and passenger space become one for extra room.
There is also plenty of leg room in the car and the seats can be ajusted to go back, for extra comfort. I have suffered from minor back problems in the past and the comfort of the seats do little to harm it. They are very comfortable so make sure you don't drive when your tired!
*************************
Look:
The look of the car is excellent, it doesn't look ugly and the front view is amazing. Although some cars look bad from certain angles, there is no angle that you can look at this car with that will not make you want to buy it. My car is red, so it makes it look even better and doesn't look too dirty when it is stinking ;-)
I think that the car does have a sporty look to it, but without the spoiler. The arial on the car is positioned above the windscreen on the middle of the roof for extra style (this can be screwed off if you were to take it for a car wash or something). The original wheel trimes also look sporty enough to forget the need for alloys.
*************************
Features/Security:
The car has central locking and comes fitted with a manufacturer's imoboliser and alarm (although this has never worked since I bought mine second-hand). It also comes with a built in radio/cassette player and the speakers in the car offer an excellent sound with decent bass.
I also believe that the car has an airbag, although I have not been unfortunate to have tested this yet (touch wood). The side view mirrors are both electric, which can be altered using controls on the door of the driver's side. The two front windows are also electric, which has both individual controls and a driver's side control for both windows. The back windows incidently are manual.
The car also has a sunroof, but this is also manual. There is also a heating/cooling system, but the car doesn't have airconditioning, which is a right git in the summer!
*************************
Reliability:
The car on the whole has been quite reliable, it has yet to break down on me (touch wood again). However, with any car there will always be problems and this car is no exception, so here is a breakdown of some of the problems my car has experienced (some of which are common in Peugeot models).
It sounded like I was a boy-racer waiting to beat someone off the lights, but in fact I didn't even have my foot on the accelerator!
Outcome: This problem is yet to be fixed, mainly due to the fact that whenever I take it down to a garage, the problem stops. I've had lots of advice on what the problem may be including, dirt in the carb and fuel system (although cleaning them out did nothing), a problem with the timing belt (although would a car still be able to run properly with this problem?) and a loose pipe or engine part that needed fixing/replacing respectively.
3) I have to result in filling up my radiator with a litre of water every other week. Somewhere along the lines there is water being lost in the engine, which also has a knock-on effect on my heating and cooling system. The temperature gauge of the engine also goes up to the red when there is hardly any water left.
Outcome: This is another unsolved mystery, although the only reason I haven't had it looked at is time and cost. If I can at least fill up my car with water then i'm ok.
*************************
These are or were the most significant problems that I've had with my Peugeot, although apart from these I've had many wonderful driving experiences.
I would reccommend this car to anyone looking to buy one, and i'm sure the latest model 106's will have a far better performance. The prices aren't bad and you won't be left on the hard shoulder during long journeys.
I believe a brand new model will set you back around £6000-£9000 depending on the features and type, although don't quote me on that!
The car has certainly been the drive of my life, but for my next car I want something with a bit more uummpphh!, I want something that is the same engine size with a better performance and comes with airconditioning. I've got my eye on a 206!
**************************
Update:
Until the other day, this probably was the drive of my life, until the car decided not to start. It wasn't a dead battery, but more of a serious problem. Its in a garage at the moment and it looks like I may need a new petrol pump, as the petrol is not getting through. This will now probably set me back around £120. However, it has been a reliable car up till now and I'll take this as a one off.
Advantages: reliable, economic, likeable Disadvantages: turning circle hell
I have to admit that I have had a soft spot for Peugeots or “Puggets” since I first started driving 7yrs ago. I learnt to drive in a 504 pick-up and till last Christmas had an old 205GLD.
In January this year I sadly was forced to put my old 205, my faithful “Puggie” into retirement and replace it with a 106XN 1.0L K reg. (92) 3 door hatchback. I was in slightly reluctant to get a 106, but a good friend spoke so highly about ... ...desperately needed to get a car that was cheap to run, insure, tax, and at the same time reliable, and I can honestly say that the 106XN fits all of these categories. I am not saying 106s are with out faults, but these are minor in my eyes, although the poor turning circle can be embarrassing, as it is such a small car. The 106XN 1L is very economical. The fuel consumption under standard conditions is 43.5 mpg (miles per gallon) on an urban cycle, ...

Advantages: easy to drive, cheap to insure and tax, good mpg Disadvantages: too many blue ones about
Nice little cars these. A friend of mine lets me borrow this frequently (don't worry I am insured for it).
The mpg (or should we really refer to miles/kilometres per litre?) is about 45-48 combined, which is fairly good I think.
You will be hard pressed to find any other colour than blue in my experience. So you will need to look that particular hue if you want one of these.
Although they are small they do have a fair bit of room in them and they ... ...and such in the back with no bother and you should see all the stuff he fits into the boot!
The gear change is quite comfortable but not too soft that you will be shooting around all of the gears. The pedals are placed well and are properly responsive. I must admit thought that I find the steering wheel a little ...petite at times.
The heater spews out plenty of warmth and will melt you if you have it on full blast. It is however a Godsend in the ...

...will have problems driving the Peugeot 106. I have size 5 feet, and had great difficulty with the pedals on this little one (they are far far too clost together). I'm a great fan of little cars, and have had no problems flipping between AXs, R5s and 205s. Stepping into a 106 was awful. Yes, it's a small, stylish looking car, but despite Peugeot's sparse styling, it feels cramped. Drive-wise, once you get past the initial feeling that you're in danger ... ...your feet, it's not that great either. I love french suspension, and quite frankly, I was disappointed with the firmness of the drive. I couldn't get over the pedal-problem with the 106, and it really for this reason only that I wouldn't recommend it! I'm sorry to people that I've failed to comment on very much more than the pedal problem. This is because I didn't drive the 106 for very long (partly because the pedals annoyed me THAT much), and found ...

Advantages: image, chuckability, responses, overall fun Disadvantages: road/tyre noise, space, lack of durability, poor dealers
...it all off, my local Peugeot dealer either doesn't know antything about peugeots or he is extremely obnoxious either way not acceptable especially when you take into account the money the charge!
This car is like the line in the nursery rhyme, 'when its good its very good, when its bad its terrible'
Believe it or not i would recommend this car to people looking for their first car or a small runaround second car. i would, however, say take somebody ... ...dont get it done at Peugeot dealers they are expensive and not all that good try local french car specialists.
if you find a newer good condition 106 then enjoy it, have fun, which you will because it is a very fun car to drive, just look for the very best car you can.
as for me well i cant wait 'till this christmas, i'm going to buy myself a BMW 316i Compact. Merry christmas to me.............. ...

Advantages: reliability, style, economy Disadvantages: no 5th gear, lack of ultimate power for overtaking.
We recently said goodbye to our old friend, the 106 XN Graduate. Owned by the family since new (1994), the car proved utterly reliable over 70,000 miles with only routine servicing required. Although it is dated by today's supermini standards, it is comfortable on long journeys, despite only 4 gears. It really needed a 5th at times, though it was something you got used to living without. As a shopping trolley, it was perfect, nimble (though power ... ...day to day use, economy was 43-45 mpg and on a run, 50 was easy to achieve. The stereo is built into the dash so thief-proof - pity there is very little other equipment to toy with.
Accept the car as a mini-workhorse and you won't be disappointed. Compare it to the modern supermini and you'll want for more, though prices are rock bottom.
Goodbye old friend. ...

Advantages: Frisky Engine, Nice Looks Disadvantages: Bad Build Quality, Depreciation
I bought this car as my 2nd car. I made the jump from a 1.0peugeot106 to the 1.6hlx Bravo on a 2001 Y plate. I was so excited and paid quite a lot of money for it at the time (2003) It had all the kit i wanted, the little body kit that comes witht he HLX package, full electrics, alloys etc. I was a very proud boy! after a few months though my thougths of the bravo quickly changed. After 17,000 miles the starter motor went quickly followed b the clutch. After 19,000 the cam belt went and my brakes failed. It was always in the garage and i was getting fed up of it very quickly. I finally sold the car 5 weeks ago with one of the door hinges snapped, thermostat giving false readings, the drivers electric window motor on its way out and a broken stereo all at 45,000 miles. Frankly no car at this milage should be in such bad ...

**The Story**
I have recently invested in a S Reg 1999 VW Polo 1.0litre. I decided on Volkswagen after Id had a lot of trouble with my first car a Peugeot106, eeevil things wont go there.
Ive always heard that Volkswagens were reliable well built cars though I'd never really taken much notice of them. I needed a small car as Im only 18 and obviouslly petrol prices and more importantly Insurance premiums are a major influence...(If you and not mommy & daddy are paying to keep your car on the road) I looked at a range of Volkswagens and decided on the Polo. I had a look at a range of different mark Polos and decided on the Mk4. Not too dated like earlier mk's and containing more modern equipment too.
I looked around and luckily almost immediately spotted a little Racing Green fellow on Autotrader. It was S Reg and had just 37 ...
