Advantages: The whole car! It's simply a very pleasant and enjoyable drive with the sports trim certain to make people take notice. Disadvantages: I can't really think of any - OK, maybe a 1.6 engine would be better!

Peugeot certainly have a stellar reputation for cars of this ilk - the legendary 205 and now the 206 - but the Quiksilver ... ..."sensible" power under the bonnet.
You don't need the pelt of a 1.6 16v engine the way speed limits are going in England at the minute and the 1.4 that's tucked away inside the Quiksilver is defeinitely a lot more favourable when it comes to that time of year to renew your insurance.
The Quiksilver I drive is on the T plate (1999) and I can safely say I've had no trouble with it, even though I do travel a lot of miles each ... more

I've found the steering to be nice and precise both at speed and when negotiating slow turns, while the comfort level is also very high. Even though it's only your basic 1.4 litre multi-point injection powerplant the engine maintains good solid acceleration and the top end isn't too bad when having to carve your way past the thousands of trucks and coaches that litter our motorways! From a consumption point of view this car is also very pleasing and the safety level is good with driver airbag while there is also an immobiliser for safety peace of mind. Having driven a number of different cars I can safely say that this is one of the very best when all things are considered. If you're looking for a car with unbeatable looks, solid performance and good value for money the 106 Quiksilver should really be your only choice. Believe me - you won't regret it.

My mum has owned a 106 1.4 automatic for over 3 years now. The car has proved extremely reliable and very satisfying to run, despite a few niggles. The pedal box, for example, is extremely small and the pedals are very close together (even with only 2 pedals in the auto version). This makes driving difficult for those with big feet, or even those with medium feet and wide shoes! The wings are also very easy to dent, as proved by several dings from ... ...steering and central locking, but no electric windows or air conditioning.
The car isn't amazingly quick, but for a small engine and automatic gearbox the performance is not bad. Fuel economy is reasonable too; expect around 30mpg on short runs. The car looks good from the outside, with body coloured bumpers and an aggressive nose (the car is a post-facelift version). I have recently bought a 106 Quiksilver and I am just so pleased I did!! I think the car looks great with its silver paint and sporty exterior. It looks sporty without making you look too much like a boy racer, which I really didn't want. The interior is nice, with electric windows and CD Player. The plastics are not as good as a VW Polo for example, but they are more than adequate. I have saved the best till last. The best part of the car is the ... ...so much better than my old Ford Fiesta! My only real concern is the MPG, but I do drive quite fast so this would affect the economy!!! If you are thinking about buying a Quiksilver, then try to find an example with a Full Service History as you could easily buy one which has been driven hard. I purchased this L reg 106 several months ago and have since run up 10,000 miles in it with few problems (it now has 81,000 on the clock). This is the diesel model which makes it very economical. I recently kept a record and calculated that it does comfortably more than 60 miles per gallon.
Although it is quite loud when starting up, it is quiet when driving and while stationary.
It seems that as long as regular checks of oil, tyre pressure are ... ...caused me problems.
It drives nicely, the steering is neither too stiff nor too loose. Gears are spread reasonably, though once you're rather highly revved in fourth, you won't get much faster in fifth. But then its not a race car. It will get up to 60 quickly and that is all that is needed.
The instrument panel has all the usual stuff, speedometer, overall and trip distance mileage, and a big clock the size of the speedometer, so you never lose ...

...to see rust on a Peugeot nowadays. Should you need them parts are readily available if a little expensive, as with most French cars.
Beware that this is what I'd call a girls car, it's built for the smaller framed amongst us, the pedals are very close together and I know from experiance give the bigger footed driver problems.
There is sufficient room inside for 5 people however, trying to get tall people in both the front and back at the sametime ...

Firstly let me just say how awful the 106 independence is. This is why I embarked upon this quest. Lets face it people who admit the independence is a good car are in denial. They just wish they hadn’t signed on the dotted line and now there making up for it by promoting how good there new investment is, but trust me there in denial. I hate the 106 independance and here’s why. Everything is wrong with them, the list is endless, ... ...size, shape, speed and comfort. Okay there a cheap little hatch but with such an ancient design why do people buy them. Currently there good for young teens as you can get a passport deal and save loads on insurance (applies to only certain dealers. 1 year free). But why are they so popular? They do move for a 1 litre but everyone will admit how unstylish these cars are. And what’s with the name the 106 independence, it’s completely wrong In fact ...

recommend looking for a model with as much service history as possible, and check for the original interior as these can fetch a small fortune so some people remove them and put cheaper interiors in or replace them with bucket seats.
Particular colours - Cherry Red, Bianca White & Sundance Yellow are more sought after and seem to cost more than other colours.
The 106 GTI was produced from 1996 - 2003. Mine is a 1998 model and falls into the old road tax brackets at £104.50 for 6 months or £190 for a year. The later one are £118.25 6months or £215 1 year.

I'm probably a little biased towards Peugeots because I owned an early 205 that I loved to bits and then a 1061.4XT that I didn't want to get rid of. I had the 106 for over 11 years and 100,000+ miles and it never let me down.
So the time came to search for a replacement car. Fortunately I didn't have to pay for this one - my company was buying it for me. While I was making my mind up I used several pool cars which were my first experience of diesels.- I drove, Vauxhalls, VW Golf and Renault Clio. Getting stuck on the M25 on the hottest day of the year with no air con. made it a requirement that my new car had air. con.
