If you have read my car ops you will know I love my cars. I dont tend to hold onto them for long and therefore have plenty ot write about. During the reign of my primera, I also owned a little Peugeot....
I bought myself a new 106 GTi about 18 months ago which I have now sold.
I did this because I bought a 205 GTi when they were coming to an end of their lifecycle and loved every minute behind the whieel. I sold it due to garage space. My Primera, my 106 and my wifes car taking up too much space. One had to go and the 106 lost on technical merit and practicality. Good job really as we now have a Bemmer too!
While the 106 is better is some ways, it lacks the overall finesse of the older 205 car that I once owned.
Acceleration cannot be faulted with a 0-60 time to make most 1.6 engines jealous. The wheels always seemed a bit too slippy to handle the torque and failed to put a bit of the power into speed. There is no 1.9 version which was always a nice addition to the 205 range. There is very little body roll from the suspension under cornering. This is thanks to an uprated suspension package that keeps the older style torsion bars at the back and shocks and springs at the front. However, travel along a raod that is too bumpy and you will find the ride quality suffers. Jarred backs and sore bums being the order of the day.
Step inside the cockpit to experience a typical French interior. Plastic everywhere. While other manufacturers opt for a leather or fabric approach, Peugeot continue with their very plastic feeling dashboards and door furniture. It gives the inside a very inpersonal feel if somewhat practical. Easy to clean up mess I suppose. The seats however do not come in a Leather trim. Cloth being the only choice. The shape however holds you tightly in place, gently hugging your body when you give it a squeeze with your right foot.
Rear seat room and passenger comfort was one of the main reasons for it's demise. When we needed to get rid of one, it lost due to complaining friends. "No legroom in the back here".... "Ive got a sore bum" Typical cries from passengers. I only sat in the back once as a passenger and I hated it. The roof felt too low and my knees were up under my chin while at the same time deeply embedded into the drivers seat.
Getting out of the car and going to the rear I noticed a severe lack of boot space. I used to struggle with my kitbag for hockey. I never could get it all in the boot and regularly failed to stuff it into the back seat. The only option was allow it to travel as a passenger in the passenger seat. Not good as it smells bad.
Exterior it could not be faulted. The shiny Metallic grey paint was immaculate and was very resistant to stone chips, like my 205 bonnet. The wheel arches were neatly dressed with factory fitted body kit as were the side sills. The more sporty looking nose helped recreate a sporty feel if it was somewhat subdued from the 205 days.
Wheels and tyres were replaced as soon as I could. The standard 14 inch rims look too small for the car and needed changing. I put 15 inchers on but you can happily sit 16's under there if you want without Wheel arch modification.
Pricing is rather sore. At £14,000 brand new, There are much cheaper alternatives with similar styling. Peugeot have always overpriced their cars but people are willing to pay them. Expect to pay £120 a service at a Peugeot dealer which is needed every 9,000 miles.
Overall, a great handling and speedy car but lacking any creature comforts.
Advantages: Can be cheap to buy, Excellent fun to drive Disadvantages: Can suffer from reliability issues and poor image
...on a review of the Peugeot (Pug) 106 GTI?
This is a car that I have loved since I first saw one 7 years ago, but I will try not to omit the bad points from my review.
I have owned my little beastie for four months now and it is the second one (and third 106) that I have owned.
I wasn't really looking at replacing my Rover Mini but a friend of mine was looking through Autotrader for a new car and I spotted a little black 106 GTI looking for a new ... ...bump strips on the door, Peugeot gave it a mini face lift getting rid of the bump strips and replacing the interior with leather and alcantara trim.
Giving a luxury feel for a relatively small budget now.
All models come with electric mirrors, electric front windows and remote central locking. The sun roofs (if fitted) are manual. Later models come with digital dials.
The 1.6litre engine can give almost 400 miles to a tank (45l) of petrol if driven ...

Don't let the Peugeot official performance figures put you off. Whilst Citroen claim 7.2secs as their figure for the Saxo, Peugeot claim 8.5secs. I experimented with a car acceleration Gforce sensor recently. Without too much trouble I recorded a 0-60 of 7.6secs
Top speed is 125mph or so.
It's the handling that this thing has that is so awesome. A Clarkson show once voted this the 2nd best handling car in the world at any price. The winner ... ...£65 each [Pirelli P700T].
Peugeot dealers are notoriously expensive but as I am pretty handy with a spanner I have not had to touch them. My local dealer in Cambridge charges £65 per hour. Yeah right!
When I got the car the brakes were all a little tired so I replaced discs all round and fitted new pads (including fast road EBC greens at the front). The whole lot only came to £130. Now that is value for money.
I would whole-heartedly recommend ...

...to 60), it’s just that Peugeot don’t strip the car out to do the test.
Top speed. Once again, it’s not going to break any records, but it can match a new Golf 2.0 GTi to 125 mph, and it doesn’t start to shake or feel unsteady thanks to perfect suspension. Inside, I can’t say it’s opulent. No CD player and I don’t have the leather interior which makes a big difference (oh with the rear head rests, mmmm comfort), but it is surprisingly roomy in the ... ...As for the only other thing I see important in a car, reliability. I haven’t had the car long enough to comment really, but I have had a few problems. I have had a new drive shaft, new tensioner jockey for the auxiliary belt, new transponder ariel and tyres every 10k. Most of this I managed to get under a 1 month warranty from the dealer so it wasn’t so bad (totalling over £500). To sum it up. It’s a great little driver’s car. So spend a few more ...

Ok let me start this review by saying WOW!! This car really is a dream to drive.
I have owned my 106 GTI for about 9 months now and I can tell you it is the best car I have ever driven. I do about 300 miles on a full tank which cos about £30 to fill up (and thats with having a little fun)! ;)

This car gives you the best of both worlds with responce when you need it and great fuel ... ...that gives you 120BHP you can do 0-60 in about 7.2 seconds, which to be honest can outrun 80% of cars on the road if you fancied a little race! hehe (Only Jokin)!
So enough about the power, whats stopping this beast? Well you have disc brakes on the front and the back wheels of this car which means you can stop on a pin head! The car also comes with power steering as standard, which is easy on the arms.
The car comes with standard GTI alloy wheels ...

I had a problem with the ignition as soon as the car was delivered. I wanted to take it for a spin, but the ignition was jammed. The ignition key wouldn’t turn and the steering lock was on. I was at the mercy of the traffic warden, but Peugeot practically washed their hands of the situation! They referred me tot he AA, but the AA referred me back to Peugeot. Advantages: Makes VTR owners jealous, 0-60 under 7.5 secs, great handling Disadvantages: Cramped seating, group 14 insurance, thats all
I upgraded my Saxo VTR to a VTS two years ago as I wanted the top of the range model. A supermini with 120HP powered by a 16V engine and 0-60 in 7.5 seconds. Even today it is still the fastest car of its class, quicker than the Peugeot106GTI and the new Mini Cooper. It can even hold its own against the Golf GTI and Honda Civic Type R. This is due to the all round disc brakes and lowered suspension combined with very nice 15" alloy wheels and very low profile tyres. This puts the car in Insurance group 14, which meant a quote of £700 for comprehensive cover with protected no claims (age 32, 7 years no claims living in Harrow). I have owned several cars through the years from Fiesta XR2's to Peugoet 205 GTI's and I must say that the VTS has been the best car that I have had. It is so versatile in all road situations from nipping to ...

longer and don't drink that much.
It would be good to get all the best things on the car like -
^ colour coded bumpers
^ front spot lights
^ allow wheels
^ cd player
^ sunroof
^ nice comfortable seats
but over all th little peugeot106 1.1 is a good car cheap and reliable but some people might find the GTI model better and want that one but it costs losts more money then a 1.1 basic one. ...
Advantages: Nippy acceleration, Superb styling looks, Great fun to drive Disadvantages: Inside is cramped for passengers, Not the best MPG, Higher Tax
what you really want to know isnt it...what bad things are you going to be expecting whilst owning this car.
This car is a brilliant car to own for fun driving as though the car sticks to the floor like glue and the performance is no Ferrari but is still impressive.
I wouldnt say this is a Hot hatch like some website do, its more of a Warm hatch because it would just get slated by a Saxo VTS & Peugot106GTI which are most defintly Hot hatches.
But talking value for money...id say this little car is a great buy.
And there reasonably cheap these days due to the new MK6 Zetec S being launch & released.
You could pick 1 up for about £2500 with high milage and the older model but for a later phase 2 model with lowish miles expect to pay up to $5000.
One last thing, with most cars there are Forums on the internet which can provide you ...
