It was in fairly good condition i.e. newish tyres, new ish battery and many things that go wrong on this type of car had already been replaced, so you can use this as a marker point to buy/sell a 205 if you are doing so- thought this info might be helpfull.

Soo, to the point. The facts..... My car typically burns 40 miles per gallon, on average it would cost £40.00 to fill the tank with un-leaded fuel or 4star if you prefer. The car is easy to maintain, I still swear that the older cars are the best, cars were built to last in the old days, now when cars are built the manufacuturer knows that it won't be long before the potential buyer will swap their car in for a newer model and arn't required to last as long anymore...but that is just my opinion.
So this car built in 1987 is now about 16years old if my maths are correct and is still going strong, in the two years that i have been driving it I have had very little go wrong with it, which is good for me as i dont have very much money and is ideal for those on a low income or studying like me. In two years i have had one break down, and even then it wasnt a complete break-down, the car was still running, the clutch was just a little dodgy. The parts for this car are relatively cheap to buy if you fancy doing any repairs yourself and they are relatively easy to get hold of still. If you like me and don't know much about under the bonnet then I suggest you find a retired mechanic who does work on the side and you could do well with repair costs.
Speed....The fastest i have travelled in my car is about 85/90 mph (which by the way i know is illegal, but i had to test it out.) When travelling at high speeds the engine can be quite noisy and it can take a while to pick up the speed as the engine size is small and acceleration isn't exactly fantastic.
Breaks....I have found the breaks to be good and not had any problems at all. They are about as responsive as you can get with out ABS.
Handling...The car is very light weight and dosnt take sharp corners very well (especially not at a speed) but if you travel within the speed limit you should find no problems, just be cautious until you are used to the handling of the vehicle.
All in all a very smart little car. I have found this car to be very reliable for its age, i was expecting a few more break downs. It dosnt have any sort of airbag facility, but is fully fitted with three seat belts in the back and two in the front.
However i have got to the stage where i want somthing with a little more power for pulling away when needed.
Buy this car if....
You want a economic run around.
Arn't fussed about appearance.
Want a small reliable car.
Dont buy this car if....
You plan to travel long distances frequently.
You want a fast posy car.
This car is an ideal first car, it has done me well as i have been able to afford to look after and run it whilst studying and i only have a part time job. It would also make an ideal run around car for a family to use as a second car for when their better car is not around or is in use by the other half.
Over all a cheap, reliable, lovely little runner!
I am going to add a comment here (comment has been added at a later date to the original piece, just some additional information I thought potential buyers might be interested in).
Sadly, two days ago i sold this car. As I mentioned before I was looking for somthing with a little more power and I now have it in the form of a Peugeot 306 D-Turbo (1.9 Deisel) Silver, P-Reg and very nice it is too.

...Yes, I Tonie, owned a Peugeot 205 GL, I thank you....
When I first passed my test I was eager to get a car (who isn't?) so after a few days of moping about on Autotrader and Loot I decided that I wanted a Peugeot. Imparticular I wanted a 206, but unfortunatly my budget didn't go as far as 7 grand, so my next option was a 205. So, after more time on the net I found a F reg 205 GL for 350 pounds. Now I realise that the car wasn't worth that but I ... ...became the extremely proud owner of a battered, moulding 205. After a good, good clean and wax it actually looked pretty good, apart for the nearside wing and two passenger door (oh yes! It was a five door!) being a slightly darker blue than the rest of the car, it scrubbed up well. Other faults included when I first got it was a stiff clutch which had a very bad squiek about it, it guzzled petrol like there was no tommorrow, it had two keys for ...

Advantages: Small, Fast, Cheap Disadvantages: Looks are a little dated
I had a 205 for about 1 and a half years and it was my first car. I had a red 205 XL (1991 H Reg) with an 1124 CC (1.1) engine. I have decided to write this opinion based on my expereince with this car and have broken it down under the following headings to make it easier to read.
Style

The style is still current enough for you to get away with it but it is starting to get slightly dated. There are also a lot of differnt version of the 205 ... ...the same outside with different styling inside. The inside is vaery basic, with there being a grey plastic dashboard and doors, with the metal body work (same colour as the outside bodywork) being visible from the inside (around the door windows and boot). Comfort

Obviously Peugeot made more models than the GTI such as the diesel which still is on of the most economical cars on the road.
One of the upgrades in the GTI models was the reinforced roof and floor panels. I guess they figured that if they made a car that would do 130mph then they better reinforce it a little bit. I owe my life to this one modification! Gone are my days of boy racerdom but I still have the pictures and the memories ...

Advantages: Looks good, reliable, cheap to buy now Disadvantages: road noise
I have had my 205 XS for 5 years now and believe it has been good value for my first car. I have driven all over England with it and it has proved reliable and performs fairly well for its capacity. When I got the car I stuck a performance air filter on, some alloy wheels and a janspeed 3" exhaust to give it some extra punch and improve its image. I have had 110mph out of the car I estimate it might reach 115mph which is good for a 1400cc car. When ... ...70mph I notice an increase in road noise. After time the noise becomes annoying and this is one constant grumble Ive had as an owner. The performance of the car around town is very good its ideal for nipping about and taking short journeys. The car has a nice big slide back sunroof which lets light in and the small side windows at the back can be opened to let more air in. When the small back windows are open they also improve the cars image by making ...

...easy to come by, a Peugeot dealer should still have everything, and there are many specialists who sell aftermarket parts. I insure mine as a second car for only £200 pa so insurance is reasonable too. To my mind this car represents perhaps the golden age of car design. It is high tech enough to be reliable and good to drive, but not too high tech with all the problems that brings. If you enjoy driving you owe it to yourself to own or at least have ...

best car i've ever driven, best hot hatch ever made, none of the new "hot hatches" even compare to this little beast!! amazing to look at, sounds incredible, and it goes! it's very difficult to find a 205 gti in good condition with under 100k on the clock, and so many are being turned into track cars, or being written off by boy racers. mine is a red edition, gti 1.9 without the cat converter (fastest original 205 ever made) 1991 plate with everything original, except the exhaust which is how i bought it! mine cost me £1600 a year ago and i can expect to get back pretty much what i paid for it as long as its in good condition. if you see one for sale and what a car which will soon be a rare classis, then go for it!! money well spent. ...

Advantages: The superior "Hot Hatch", a cult classic. Disadvantages: They are no longer made. People overkit them up, stolen badges!
Why oh why oh why oh why do people do it?
Adding crap body kits and over sized exhausts to their cars, thats what i'm on about. I have seen cars cruisin' with kits so low that speedbumps are a no go zone and exhausts so large that its possible for people behind them in Smart cars to drive up and take a detour into the manifold!
Don't get me wrong, i am all for styling kits and aftermarket exhausts (i also drive a Mitsi FTO) but...tastefully done and also done for a reason i.e, why does a 1.2 Clio need a Subaru style/size exhaust? It just doesn't have the power to justify it...Live with it, mate!
One victim of this incessant "crap kitting" is this cult classic.....the Peugeot205 GTI...here is an example of a car that pushed forward the boundarys of the "affordable" pocket rocket in both engineering and aesthetics.
The 205Gti ...

Advantages: A classic in a class of its own Disadvantages: Mmm?
It looks as though the Peugeot205 CTI deserves a mention, lest that upstart 206 hogs all the limelight. When the 205 cabriolet was released it was relatively expensive and sold in limited numbers; the fact that it was a convertible was a bit of a novelty too. Just like the GTI, the CTI was produced with a 1.6 or 1.9 engine, both
of which are fairly rapid. We must leave aside the somewhat sadder 1.4 Junior, which lets the side down a bit (pity they bothered). With its power, zest and handling the 205 found and still has many admirers (including Top Gear?s Jeremy Clarkson!). If you?re looking to get a CTI then it will pay to avoid the scruffier examples around (though fortunately there are few). Pay particular attention to the
hood, and check that the hood cover is included in the deal. These should be free of tears and snags ...
