I had a 205 for about 1 and a half years and it was my first car. I had a red 205 XL (1991 H Reg) with an 1124 CC (1.1) engine. I have decided to write this opinion based on my expereince with this car and have broken it down under the following headings to make it easier to read.
Style ~~~~~ The style is still current enough for you to get away with it but it is starting to get slightly dated. There are also a lot of differnt version of the 205 (some being the junior, style, xl, xs) all pretty much the same outside with different styling inside. The inside is vaery basic, with there being a grey plastic dashboard and doors, with the metal body work (same colour as the outside bodywork) being visible from the inside (around the door windows and boot).
Comfort ~~~~~~~ The very first time i sat in the 205, the first thing that struck me was how comfortable the seats were. They were really soft and you just sank into them. There is plenty of space for your feet and the pedals arn't cramped. The seat position can be adjusted and the steering position is very good (even though the steering wheel is quite big!). For a car without power steering, the steering isn't too heavy and you shouldn't have any problem handling the car.
Speed ~~~~~ Surprisingly for a small engine car, it was very quick of the mark. I currently have a citroen saxo 1.1i (1999 T reg) and it is no where nearly as quick of the mark as my old 205. It had good acceleration up to the third gear, fifth gear didn't really have any acceration. Thr brakes arn't the most responsive in the world, but are capable of safely stopping you while having complete control over the car at high speeds.
Mods ~~~~ If you want to buy a car and modify it then this is a good car you. There are a lot of different body kits you can buy and if you buy a lower sized engine version of the 205 then there are a lot of kits allowing you to make it like the super sporty GTis (1.6 and 1.9).
Price ~~~~~ The prices will vary depending on the condition the car is on and the engine size. The sproty GTis can fetch quite a bit more than the basic models like mine. The insurance and tax is cheap as well. The insurnce group for the 1.1 is 3 to 4.
