Are you aware that Peugeot have created the 206 as a replacement for the 205? Hah! Don’t be tempted to go for one even if a convertible appears! OK, so it may be shinier and have more refinements but you can’t replace something that’s perfect, can you? Besides, most newer hatchbacks are rather ugly (what about those with vertical backs that resemble miniature buses? The designer must have started at the front and then completely lost it). It looks as though the Peugeot 205 CTI deserves a mention, lest that upstart 206 hogs all the limelight. When the 205 cabriolet was released it was relatively expensive and sold in limited numbers; the fact that it was a convertible was a bit of a novelty too. Just like the GTI, the CTI was produced with a 1.6 or 1.9 engine, both of which are fairly rapid. We must leave aside the somewhat sadder 1.4 Junior, which lets the side down a bit (pity they bothered). With its power, zest and handling the 205 found and still has many admirers (including Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson!). If you’re looking to get a CTI then it will pay to avoid the scruffier examples around (though fortunately there are few). Pay particular attention to the hood, and check that the hood cover is included in the deal. These should be free of tears and snags, and the rear window shouldn’t be opaque! If you spot anything tatty then leave well alone as what you can’t see will probably be worse. Apart from general condition and clean, non-smokey engines, a full service history is a must since, like Golf GTIs, 205s were a thief’s dream and some write-offs illegally managed to see the road again after a botch and weld job. It’s as well to check in the boot for any signs of past water leaks - lift the insulation and inspect the sides to make sure there is no rust. It isn’t easy to find low-mileage examples but even a 90,000 mile model should present no problems if it’s been looked after. I keep mine garaged all the time because it has an aversion to British weather until it glimpses sunlight under the garage door. I pamper it sometimes with silicon and Armour All, and even bought it a beanie bag that matched the interior trim! I also have to confess to buying it a Janspeed exhaust and (forgive, please) a registration number and customised plate with 205 on it. You don’t have to go this far, of course. Two options you may like to consider when buying a CTI are power-steering and an automatic hood. Are you aware that Peugeot have created the 206 as a replacement for the 205? Hah! Besides, most newer hatchbacks are rather ugly (what about those with vertical backs that resemble miniature buses? The designer must have started at the front and then completely lost it). A 205 CTI is sporty, fun, zestful and reliable. And much better than taking a bus. -Dimo.

...whole life (one being a Peugeot dealer).
The car also had a rather bizarre specification of things it shouldn’t have had. It was blessed with an automatic gearbox, power steering and air conditioning. As it happens this is one of handful of cars which were given to dealers as a special order and were never ‘official’ UK specifications. A call to a classic car mag (who had just ran an article all about them) said it was difficult to value, but was ... ...they said it was a steal.
A good clean later and it scrubbed up nicely, and the metallic grey paintwork soon buffed up like new. Unlike many of these cars, this one was unmolested having not had a single modification (other than an immobiliser) fitted. It even had the original stereo.
It was also remarkably rust free. After a thorough going over we couldn’t find anything other than a bit of surface rust.
The only problems we could find were a ...
