Following the great success of the Peugeot 206 series, the French auto manufacturer launched the 206 HDi in mid 1998,and this diesel powered compact hatchback has already achieved enormous popularity in its home country. In excess of half a million units have been sold in France alone and last year sales in that market totalled some 160,000 units. The 206 HDi has also been exported to UK and to other markets around the world.
There is no doubt this model has a very youthful appeal and comes across as a fun to drive compact, stylish, elegant with great appeal to the younger set.
What arguably lends itself to its popularity is the 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine that the French manufacturer had origibally introduced in the midrange 306 and some executive versions of the 406. The HDi 4-cylinder diesel-coded DW10 TD-features a single overhead camshaft and a turbo charger system to complement its high pressure direct injection system.
This hatchback delivers a rather modest 90 bhp in optimum power but its strong point is its torque of 205 Nm. It has a relatively low fuel consumption and considerbly lower combustion noise than that generated by alternative injection systems.
The Peugeot comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox that is optimisedin ratios to the turbodiesel engine. The 206HDi has a suspension system composed of two triangular Pseudo McPherson strut semi-axles in the front and a cross member with parallel arm-type design at the rear. Anti lock brakes come as standard and is also equipped with 14 inch steel wheels, but, alloys are offered by the French manufacturer as an option.
I am not lucky enough to own this fun-to-drive compact hatchback but a close friend who does reckons it is the "bees knees.". Certainly this French beauty is getting good reviews and a lot of satisfied owners in France, UK and other countries. It has just about all the trappings of a fun car to drive but is also surprisingly economical.

I really am glad you wrote...because I just checked and all but two of your reviews on this page did not take my rating.
The second page took. I'm sorry.

never owned a Peugeot, it certainly looks very stylish. I currently own a 4x4; somehow I cannot see a very smart Peugeot pulling a horse box over fields etc. Nice opinion

Lovely little cars, but they are pricey. Driving a Beetle myself, I am probably not allowed to say anything about the price. Cheers riaan
Advantages: convenient size, good fuel consumption, good design and features Disadvantages: a few niggly warranty issues and problems with peugeot main dealers over such claims
