Advantages: Looks Grrrrrr, front foglights, low miles cheap insurance cheap to run Disadvantages: only 90bhp, crap back middle seatbelt
I used to have a peugeot 306 1.4 P reg mark 1 on about 120k miles. It was a great car, but bashed to bit falling apart around an engine that purred like a kitten. So when i wanted another reliable car I pursued the 306 again. I got my original P reg in 2002 for £1500 this time I was looking for an R reg Mark 2 at about 2 grand.
My friend informed me of a 2001 X reg mark 3 at £2500, i went to look expecting high mileage. It was a gorgeous ... ...a 1.6 engine and full peugeot service history, and an MOT. No complaints at all from Terry Mason car sales, mellor street rochdale lancs.
Anyway this thing flies. The 0-60 time is pretty fast, havent actually timed it yet but it goes some. The service interval is about 20,000 miles too, so for high mileage people it is a good car to have. Also it has a 60 litre petrol tank, I find i can do a Manchester to Glasgow M6 run, and back again ... more

My friend informed me of a 2001 X reg mark 3 at £2500, i went to look expecting high mileage. It was a gorgeous Meridian SE model. Part leather bucket seats, in Moonstone colour, (Sky blue silver) front driver and passenger and side airbags, cd player, air con with climate control full electric pack including heated electric wing mirrors 1.6i engine 15" alloys front fog lights, remote central locking, front rain sensing wipers, highly polished exhaust, all as standard!!! It looked great and at only 33,000 miles.
Puzzled are you, well so was I until I realised my friend was wrong and the actual price was £4395!!!!!!!!!
I bought it anyway, hello finance hell.
Bearing in mind I got the car june 2005 it wasnt much over 4 years old. Plus got 6 months tax which is about £97 on a 1.6 engine and full peugeot service history, and an MOT. No complaints at all from Terry Mason car sales, mellor street rochdale lancs.

The service interval is about 20,000 miles too, so for high mileage people it is a good car to have. Also it has a 60 litre petrol tank, I find i can do a Manchester to Glasgow M6 run, and back again on a single tank. Not bad for a 1.6.
The gears I find as with my old 306 1.4 are extraordinarily tolerant. 1st gets you to about 35, 2nd up to about 65, 3rd to about 88, and 4th to an even 112, before the rev limiter kicks in. 5th gear is a bit useless below 70ish for real acceleration or uphills on motorways because of the stretched ratio range, but I find if you wanna do 70 in 5th gear or even 80-90 it is a very economical car. I blast the thing everywhere because it is so much fun to drive and still get about 32 mpg (about 12.5p per mile at 85.9 pp litre). Max I have had it upto is about 123ish at which it sits rather comfortably at about 5500 rpm. Very nice considering my mums saxo 1.1 sits at 95 at the same revs. Its only a 90bhp model though so its a bit frumpy sometimes especially up long hills where it needs really pushing or a down shift.
It looks as good as it sounds as well, with the side skirt the colour the round front spot/foglights which do so much for illuminating the road, i use them when im driving up small streets at night because they define the kerb so much better.
The passenger airbag can be switched off for kiddys in the front seat, however it only comes with a middle lap belt in the back which is disappointing considering the other specs of the car. Another thing is the rear headrests which are great for rear passenger comfort but a nightmare when reversing, as the car is rounded at the back when doing a tight 3 point turn, with an object behind you the headrests block the entire passenger rear quarter of the cars rear window. I usually either run it safe, or get a friend to guide me if they are in the back. Another alternative would be to take the headrest out of the back and leave them on the floor so people can put them back in if they want when they get in. Full leather headrest as well so they add to the looks so i leave them there.
The glovebox is apalling. It is a little gap that drops down, you can fit a bottle of coke in it surrounded by a few cadburys miniature heroes but not much more. The maps I have have to sit in the rear seat holders on the back of the passenger and drivers seats, and the service manual has its own cute slot under the passengers seat. The car is very well laid out inside with CD player remote control and everything within easy reach.
My handbrake comes up about 2 clicks and feels solid, as do the brakes which feel like front and rear disc brakes despite only being front disc rear drum. ALL 307's come with front and rear discs, as opposed to fords new focus, which doesnt even have rear discs on the back on the ghia model, which has cruise control. PLAY THE GAME FORD!!!!!
anyway thats a different moan. For security the car has deadlocks and a key immobiliser. Peugeot are always helpful when I go to see them and approach me in a manner which is knowledgeable and yet not patronising. They treat me as a person and look after my car well.
Apart from that all is groovy with this car, goes like a picasso in a pound shop and for looks is one of the best looking standard cars you can drive, it looks mean and fast, just as it is. Sounds really good too, the engine roars like a very powerful lion.
Advantages: Comfortable seats, quite nippy, nice styling, Disadvantages: Thirsty Engine, Small at the back, Electronics failure, mechanical problems
I bought my car from an independant dealer for about £3500 which is not bad for the condition it was in, had fair mileage for its age just over 41,000 miles. My car is 9 years old when i bought it, it was near enough mint condition only had to get a replaced battery as the car didnt start but was courtesy of the dealer. It is an Automatic Gearbox, chose this as I prefer driving Auto and it was not bad considering that the car had 100BHP, I advise ... ...pleasure rather than the standard 90BHP. Now to discuss in a little bit more detail: Safety: My Car came standard with 4 airbags two at the front and two just beside the front seats, I would personally vouch for the safety as quite safe as i had an accident 1 year after the purchase of my car, where it was slippery, I went into the back of another car as I was heading for a roundabout, my bonnet curled inwards and my front bumper and lights were ...

Advantages: excellent steering and handling; looks good Disadvantages: now feeling rather old; some quality and electrical niggles
The Peugeot 306 1.6XS is a three-door model. I am reviewing a 1996 "pre-facelift" model.
I was looking to replace my Ford Escort 1.6Si with something of a similar size that was fun to drive. I was after a car that was reasonably nippy, had cheap insurance and would be reliable for a weekly commute between Kent and Cornwall for several months.
One of the cars I had in mind was the Peugeot 306, and specifically the 1.6XS model - an average model ... ...now been solved, although a Peugeot dealer failed to correct the first dim-dip relay failure.
- a fairly continuous rattle from the electric sunroof frame - usually solved by sliding the sunroof open a bit, closing it, then slamming the lid shut, and then not driving on a bumpy road. If I leave the lid open it will rattle unless the sunroof is open too.
- the engine idle is a bit irregular, sometimes cutting out especially in cold weather - it ...

Advantages: Cheap insurance Quick acceleration Disadvantages: Load at motoway speeds
I had a Peugeot 106 1.1 XN up to about a year ago and then I gave it to a friend of mine. So I started looking for a new car.
I always wanted a 306 as my brother’s friend had one and I liked the look of it. So I started looking through the auto trader magazine and Website.
I thought I struck gold when a saw a 306 XS 1.6 44K mileage for only £3500. So I got my mum to drive me to the garage took it for a test drive and bought it instantly.
What ... ...very attractive car. I t has colour coded bumpers and looks a lot beefier than the usual 306's. It comes with alloys as standard and has semi bucket seats.
The inside of the car is very comfortable in the front as well as the back but if you have friends who are very tall I would put them in the front.
The engine is the same as the saxo VTR so it is very powerful for such a low insurance car. I think it’s a group 5 so it’s very cheap for the power. ...

Advantages: Very cheap second hand XS has good spec Disadvantages: Electric windows on older cars
...£80, do not go to Peugeot for this to be done, they charges you 4 hours labour and in total it comes to around £250 for a cam belt changes, choose your friendly local garage instead.
This car has an electric sun roof and electric windows and a good four speaker stereo with steering wheel remote.
The seats are the best feature of the interior as they really hold you in when cornering, and give a lot of support to your back.
The boot is very large ...

Advantages: Good affordable quality Disadvantages: Insurance for young drivers
The 306 has always impressed me as a good looking, value for money car. The value is increased at the moment with some retailers offering free insurance! To relatively young drivers this can resemble a sizeable cost saving. The ride is smooth as a result of the well engineered suspension. There are a number of engine sizes, but I would recommend the 1.6 meridian which retails around the 12k mark. Overall the performance on the 1.6 is good for a car ...

Advantages: Reliable Disadvantages: As with most cars dealership repairs and servicing are pricey
My 306 meridian has been in the family since its birth in 1996. It was an ex demonstrator and I can honestly say it has been the most reliable car any one of us has owned. It has never broken down (touch wood). The exhaust has only been replaced once in its life. Having said that my local peugeot garage is excellent (more than I can say for Vauxhall) and the car has been regularly serviced. By this I mean a full service at least once a year. The only fault it has had ,that has been a niggle, rather than an annoyance, is the pin which prevents the drivers door swinging back has popped out twice.
The central locking has recently stopped working on the drivers door, but due to the age of the car I'm not surprised. It has over 114000 miles on the clock and still manages over 35 to the gallon (1.6 cc). Unfortunately due to ...
Had a 306 fro approx. 6 months and as soon as I sell it the better. Nippy, looks good, but not much more I'm afraid to say. Problems with battery, alarm, immobiliser and the list just keeps going. Just spent £250 but with another £500 on the hirizon..i just need some unlucky victim to come along soon...please help! Anyone good luck if you have one, avoid if you don't but maybe I was just an unlucky one! Another problem that Ive experienced is due to the distanc ethat I commute.. The 306 lacks the economy aspect that many other smalller cars, especially diesels can offer and when one is having to pay £60 in order to travel 500 miles you have to ask certain questions. All I can say is if this car is still of interest, make sure the milage is low, you get it checked out by the AA first an that it has a full service history, good luck! ...
Advantages: Great handling, Cruise Control, 125BHP Disadvantages: Wheel spin with heavy acceleration.
So firstly this is my 2nd car, moving from 1.6 litre Peugeot306, and boy was I blown away by the vast improvement in switching cars!
The handling in the Astra ( SRi 1.8) is excellent, and takes coners with a breeze. From start to 60mph in 9 seconds. And is a surprisingly nippy car, Now for the boring stuff...
The gear shift is short and well positioned. The pedals are sited without any offset from the driving position. There is adequate clearance beside the clutch pedal to rest your foot. The pedal weight on the clutch is perfect although the resistance of the accelerator pedal is a little light. The instruments are clear and attractive, and have like a brushed aluminiuim thing around them which compliments other details on the dash and interior, which is rather spacious, than say the corsa, or other vauxhalls, exculding ...
