I bought this car (110bhp) in 2003. There seems to be a clutch problem for 307 diesels manufactured this year and perhaps in previous years. My clutch (dual mass flywheel) disintegrated at around 28 000 miles. Peugeot replaced the whole clutch kit under warrantee. Another Peugeot dealer told me that the clutch is guaranteed for 5 years or 100 000 miles. So, if your clutch needs replacing, do not be shy to take it back to Peugeot if it is still under the warrantee.
My driver side wing mirror was replaced under warrantee because the heater did not work. The rear left hand side brake light seems to be replaced more often than the right one. I do not know why. Perhaps it is due to cheap inferior bulbs from Halfords.
The windscreen is is large, but athermic. So, if you want to install a sat-nav system, you will need to either put the GPS receiver next to the triangular side window (driver or passenger) or connect an external aerial to receive signals for the GPS. I think the modern 16 and 32 channel GPS receivers will not pose any problems if in the glove box. Please do not take my word on this because I have never tried it.
Front and rear tyres needed replacing at 18 000 miles. I think the Goodyear NCT5 (original) are not suited for this car if you are thinking about high mileage. Another set of Falken FK-451 front tyres needed replacing after 22 000 miles. Still have Falken FK-451 at the rear (30 000 miles) and replaced the fronts with Dunlop SP1 (10 000 miles), which seems to be doing well. Dunlop and Falken use the same rubber supplier for their tyres.
My car was recalled in 2005 for a steering problem. I think it had something to do with electrical shielding. I got this quote from another site: "reinforce the sealing of the electrical connection of the power assisted steering system ".
Current mileage is 47 000 miles. I have not had any problems so far. I have read that there could be suspension problems with these cars - every time you go over a speed bump, there is a loud knock or crack from the front suspension. If it happens perhaps it is prudent to take it back to Peugeot. However, there is a flip side to it in that if Peugeot does not find anything wrong, they will charge you for the inspection.
The car handles and drives very well. On motorways, it is a dream since changing gears happens less often due to the high torque from the engine. Two years ago when there was heavy snowfalls and ice on the roads, the Traction control and other gizmos (ESP) linked to it assisted me in getting home without killing myself. Really worth the money to have these helpful electronic bits in the car.
I have not crashed the car so I cannot comment if the car is very safe in an accident. I think it got a 4 star EuroCap crash rating.
All in all, I am very satisfied with my car. I will continue using it until it dies. I am not sure if servicing the car yourself or by an authorised dealer would be best. Certainly cheaper to service it yourself, if you know what you are doing. However, your resale value decreases dramatically if you choose this option.
Another big issue is the FAP. It needs to be refilled around the 70 000 mile mark, and I have heard it is very expensive.
