I drive a lease vehicle, which I keep for 3 years. Having been given the choice of around ten "rep" type motors I opted for the Peugot 406lx petrol this time around. I drove a Mondeo for the last term. I have nothing bad to say about the Mondeo, but after renting a 406 on an overseas trip I was hooked. French cars in general ten to have a "softer" ride and comfort level. Having a bad back this was one of my considerations. After almost 12 months of driving the 406 and some 35000 miles later, heres my view. A comfortable ride over long distances, i.e 850 miles from Zeebrugge to Trieste in around 11 hours, sometime wellying along the Autobahn, others just plodding. I felt quite comfortable throughout. If I am not in too much of a hurry I can acheive 40 mpg plus at 80 mph-ish, by monitoring the mpg reading on the digital display, and adjusting my revs according to efficient use of the engine relative to the environment. The gearbox has a good feel, nice positive engagement. steering, light yet positive and true. Braking, handling and cornering very good considering I usually have a full boot of tools etc. Since writing my opinion I was involved in an accident with the car. I was stationary at a road junction, and a Cavalier came out of a side street at high speed and smashed into my front wheelarch smahing the wing etc, and then continung along the full length of the car before buggering off. I thought it would be a write off for sure, but the inside and main structure of the vehicle remained intact. A wing, 2 new doors, sill and the cosmetic work done and the car is like new again, and there is no detecable difference att all to the characteristics of the drive, all very confidence inspiring, and a tribute to the designers of this motor. The aesthetics of the car are really nice, especially in the darker colours. I opted for the dark metallic green. The interior is extremely well equipped and laid out. Good visibilty of all instruments and controls. The functionality of all the equipment is first class. For example the climate control. In normal use you can set it to a comfortable level say 18 deg. C and it will maintain it very well in automatic mode. If it gets too hot outside and the climate control needs air conditioning on, the trade off with fuel is negligable unlike some air con systems. The air distribution is well planned as are the options for same. I am well impressed with the factory fitted stereo, manufactured by Clarion. Radio recption very good and interference free. The CD player copes very well with bumpy roads, I have never detected a jump. The speaker system will handle some heavy work, well tested at a volume that matches a disco by my son with Oasis etc. All functions are available from the steering column, a big plus safety wise when driving. I love the automatic wiper which Peugot are now using, no one ever seemed to get the intermittent function right. But with this system, you can switch to atuo and forget about them, they come on and off and adjust to the amount of rain falling extermely well. It may be getting a little long in the tooth design wise nowadays, but in 2 years time if the model has not changed, I would have another, unless Peugot give it a facelift. One minor irritation is the armrest which when folded down dont have the right height and make gear changing difficult. All in all a good motor.
Advantages: Big, Bold and Beautiful Disadvantages: None so Far!
I am now the proud owner of a 4-year-old 406 1.9TD. And what can I say - 'What a car!'. I love it. My previous car was a Ford Sierra 2.0 Petrol and this new 406 delivers all the power I'm used to with the extra comforts of a newer car.
Power steering comes as standard, which is a godsend in my opinion. I wondered why my arms always ached after a long drive before! As I read in a previous opinion the full lock does not give as tight a turning circle ... ...Other extras include electric front windows, air conditioning and a 10 CD changer. The windows have two position button - press them hard and the window opens fully. This can be a little annoying, especially if it's raining!
The air conditioning works hot or cold. I thought air conditioning only gave you cool air but it actually de-humidifies hot air too. This makes de-misting your windscreen quick and easy.
As for the CD player, Wow! Fantastic. ...

The Peugeot 406 is an excellent car - a great improvement on the 405 which was nevertheless a good car itself. I currently drive a 406 diesel and the extras, which come as standard are the icing on the cake.
The 406 diesels come with a turbo unit as standard, which enhances performance, with a noticeable increase of power once the car's rev counter is over 2,750rpm. It's not quick off the mark or particularly fast - it's a diesel - but it is sufficiently ... ...From new, and now with 45,000 miles on it, with regular servicing I have not had a part changed, except the odd bulb, or oil filter. The air conditioning is an excellent accessory and I have never had any problems with the unit itself - having driven through France and Spain twice.
The only down points which I have noticed are
1) The tape player does not have AMS (Automatic Music Search)
2) There is no ABS as standard.
These two points are two ...

...a 1997 P reg silver Peugeot 406 1.9 LX TD for sale one mile up the road. A direct swap and 90 mins later, I was filling my new acqusition up with £30 of diesel.
What an inspired choice! The Pug 406 diesel, although it needed a quick valet (done myself with £17 of products from Halfords and a couple of hours one warm day) has been a delight. The colour is superb, especially under sunlight or streetlights, and the overall finish of the bodywork is ... ...The 1.9TD engine is well documented as being gutless, and this is only true of first gear. Yes, it does take a fortnight to get to the end of the drive, and it needs a sundial for a rev counter, but the engine will cruise at 80 mph all day long on the motorway. The seats are wide and comfortable, and the toys such as twin airbags and remote stereo controls are very welcome.
Lots of visibility and efficient brakes make the 406 feel like a safe car: ...

...husband suggesting we buy a Peugeot 406 LX TD1.9cc was somewhat hysterical, having only driven small cars. I wanted a Tigra. nevertheless my first drive of it, though i was nervous went like a dream. i have been hooked on this car ever since that day. The interior could be improved by the addition of a CD player as tape cassettes are a bit has-been now. I would like to instal one in our car but the cassette player is contained within fancy trim, and it would have to be tackled by the garage. I find it a little hesitant starting on wet days, but it has never been a problem ...

...not been dissapointed with my Peugeot 406.I have had my Peugeot for two and a half years now and I have had no breakdowns at all. It has a regular service by a Peugeot dealer. The only major problem I did have was with the clutch. It did not cause a breakdown but I thought it was getting rather "heavy". I started getting knee pains because of the effort I was putiing on the clutch. The garage replaced it and it was great for about two months, now ... ...got the car just before Peugeot started to fit Cd players as standard. The tape player is a bit Hissy. One great feature is the air conditioning. If you've never had it, Get It....it great on a hot summers day, although you can feel the engine power dropping when its turned on. Overall, its a good car and by choice I would be tempted to have one. So, not a bad choice for a company car. It could benefit from a rear windscreen wiper & washer though. ...

Advantages: Good overall estate car, comfortable Disadvantages: Not pleasing to the eye, Peugeot 406 better
My car choice now boiled down to a choice of two. A major part of the choice had been made for me – the company car scheme was going diesel. A decision which made the company fleet manager about as popular as the Chancellor’s fuel price policy.
I had also decided I wanted an estate, and I wanted it to be capable of towing a caravan , budget = £19000.
So it came down to in the red corner the Renault Laguna 1.9 dTi Estate and in the blue corner the Peugeot406 2-litre Hdi Estate. I had had a 406 petrol before so knew the car quite well, a quick test in the new diesel was quite impressive and the opportunity presented itself to drive a Laguna Estate at a Renault promotional event in Derbyshire. Seconds away….

Advantages: cost pennies to run, reliable, no one will steal it Disadvantages: not easy to pull driving it
Just recently I've been driving a 305 Diesel estate. You probably won't be familar with this particular Peugeot mainly because they look so damn awful, styling ? what styling. What is worth knowing is that they use the 1.9 XUD Diesel engine that until recently was the mainstay of the Peugeot range, and found in the 205, 309, 405, 106, 306, 406 and possibly others for all I know. The car is frankly a shed, it is a company car, and has done 155 000 miles, every panel is dented, a lot of the plastic trim such as mirrors etc have fallen off, the fuel guage doesn't work, but you want to know the best bit ? that engine. Is starts first time every time even in the wet winters that we in Scotland specialise in. The engine settles down to an even roar, and you pull off. By no stretch of the imagination could it be described as fast, but there is ...

Peugeot 405 1.9 GR
The family orientated Peugeot 405 was one of Peugeots main sellers throughout the 90?s replaced by the 406 a few years back it now makes for a wise 2nd hand buy. The styling is similar to many family saloons though it is slightly less boxy looking than many of its rivals. Other models in the range benefit from alloy wheels and a discreet rear spoiler which certainly add to the aesthetics of the car. The interior is very comfortable with a good driving position and a solid feel to it. Facilities vary greatly throughout the range depending on age and model and as such it is somewhat hit and miss to try to give an accurate assessment. Some degree of electrics will be included, as will a sunroof, though the earlier models did not have power steering (this is the case with the model I am describing here). To drive ...
