A nice plain English op on a car. I purchased my Peugeot 406Hdi rapier Saloon in December 2001. Only the second brand new car I had ever purchased. The first being a Peugeot 305 a few years ago. That car had given me many trouble free miles so I thought I would stick with them. I suppose it’s a bit like the devil you know.
As a cab driver in London it had to be a diesel car. Economy is the Number one rule as saving money these days is so important.
There was a company in Scotland offering the best deal so I phoned, and arranged delivery.
A week later my shiny metallic China blue Peugeot 406 car arrived.
I like a largish car that’s comfortable. I like reliability and economy fuel consumption. Speed is not that important, I suppose functional is the best description.
The Peugeot 406 fitted my needs on description, but would it fill my needs on use.
The controls and the interior.
I sat in the car and started to look through the manual to try to get to grips with the controls. The steering wheel is small and compact. The centre is rectangular with four spikes going out to the outer wheel. It is chunky and easy to hold with one or two hands. The dashboard display is large and easy to see. Displays include speed, revs, Temp, oil temp, and a light fault display on the bottom. It is computerised and will tell you if anything is wrong. There is also an oil level digital display, a nice touch for those of you who don’t like checking the oil. There are various audio warnings. These include one for leaving your lights on and if you leave your keys in the ignition and attempt to get out of your car. The radio goes into economy mode and switches itself off after half an hour. All the periphery controls and indicators are to your left and clearly displayed. They are all digital. Time, outside temp, inside temp, air conditioning, fan, radio frequency. My car had a CD player as standard but I was upset I could not play my tapes. It meant they were obsolete. There is a small angled recess under this which holds things without them falling out. Behind this is the gear stick followed by the airbag on/off switch and the handbrake. Going backwards there is then a double drinks holder. I liked this. I am always drinking cans and never have anywhere to put them.
The drivers seat was comfortable and included controls to move it backwards and forwards, and for up or down. Another control on the side let your seat recline.
There are four airbags, two for the front and two for the back.
The seats were made of velour and seemed quite robust. It has four electric windows and the rear ones can be shut off from the front to stop those little fingers. One other thing, it has very rapid front window demisting, saves all that ice scraping in the winter. It is usually demisted within a couple of minutes of starting the car.
The boot.
The boot is quite large but the entrance can be a bit tight for large prams. Although the back seats all go down so it is handy for the DIY enthusiasts. This almost gives you small estate car status. Unusual for a saloon.
Under the bonnet.
I am not going to explain the technical details of the car in to much detail, as I am not a mechanic. However the car is equipped with a 2-litre diesel engine. I get about 46mpg when I am motorway driving, this drops to as little as 23mpg when in heavy traffic. I use about a tenner a day at work, which is brilliant. It has five gears and you can comfortably go into fifth at 35mph. The acceleration belies a diesel car and it is very quiet. People often comment on how quiet it is. Although under the bonnet resembles something out of the star ship enterprise, all the things we need to know and do are clearly visible. Oil filler, water, and windscreen washer water.
Handling.
The car has power steering, which means it is simple to steer. It holds the road well and I have no complaints there. It carries loads very well and I have often been fully loaded with lagers from France and it drives the same as when it is empty.
Servicing.
It has a very low maintenance threshold. Major services are only every 12.000 miles. The intermediate service is just a check and an oil top up. These are very cheap. I go to Peugeot and it costs about £50. The 12.000-mile services are more expensive and the most I have paid is £200. That was for the big 36.000mile service. I have now done 51.000 miles in 22 months without one single running problem. Worth noting, I also still have the original tyres.
Problems.
I have only had one problem and that involved replacing the aerial mounting, which is on the front of the roof. I whacked it while I was washing the car and I found a puddle of water by the gear stick one day. The seal had broken. There have been two recalls, one for the boot lock, and the other just to check a connection was correct. Neither was important and both were done at service times, so there was no inconvenience.
Safety.
It has central locking and child locks on the back doors. It is also fitted with all round air bags.
Security.
The locks can be operated by remote control, (button on key) or with the key in the door. Press twice and it puts dead locks on as well. So it is double locked. The radio is built in so is useless to a thief and not worth stealing.
Entertainment.
Fitted as standard radio with all sorts of frequencies and a CD player. The sound standard is very high, and has a very high potential volume. The radio has channel memory and loads of other things I have never used. I only listen to two stations. Speakers are fitted in the front and rear.
Conclusion
Once again I have found the Peugeot to be very reliable and trouble free. The servicing is not too expensive and the 12.000 gaps make it even cheaper. I have found it to be practical for load carrying and all my passengers say it is comfortable and a nice car. For a nice practical family car I would recommend it. However if you like a performance car this is not for you. It did fulfil my needs in use.

Advantages: Drives like a petrol but gives better feul consumption Disadvantages: Not a drivers car.Very dainty handling.
I guess the first things that come to mind when you mention deisel engines are noise, slow acceleration, and sluggish performance. All of which this car lacks. When standing still it is a bit noisier than a petrol but once on the move it is as smooth and as quite as a petrol engine. The turbo deisel engine (2.1) is quite nippy as well. Put your foot down and there is an instant response, even though you get a cloud of smoke from the back. This car ... ...from a car of this class and some new ones.I particulary like the double cental locking system which automatically shuts any open windows once you lock it with the remote control. The driving experience is too light for my liking.Doesnt feel like you are driving at all, almost feels like it is driving itself. The clutch, steering, and pedals are feather light and move effortlessly. Some would find this a good quality but I like a tougher feel to a ...

I bought my 406 when it was 1 years old with 15000 miles. Since then it has done 45000 miles in two years.
I have been very pleased with it except for the front disk brakes which I will come to later.
It's most oustanding features are fuel economy and refinement. On my 40 mile commute covering A roads and fast dual carriageway, the 406 averages 54mpg. I think that is an excellent figure for a car of this size, (the lowest I ever got was 49mpg). ... ...4th gear overtaking performance is very good. Standing start acceleration is not as good as an equivalent petrol, but then that's the same for the majority of diesels.
Refinement is also excellent. At 70mph the engine is doing 2250rpm, indeed at 100mph it's doing just 3100rpm. It just loves to cruise at very high speeds, 100mph feels just like 70mph.
Handling is good, the car feels composed at all times and it takes a lot of speed to get the car ...

Advantages: Easy to drive comfortable Disadvantages: parts expensive
When I choose a car I need one that apart from being reliable it needs to be comfortable. Being 6ft 1 inches with my legs making up a greater part of my length / Height makes my first criteria can I sit in this car with comfort.
When I needed another car last year I had to consider a 65 mile journey to and from work. So comfort then fuel type was critical. Ever since I first saw a 406 I thought they looked a nice car.
So I brought a second hand ... ...It fitted me like a glove gives my legs room enough to be almost fully stretched out.Its so easy to drive and dosent feel like a big car when driving it handles excellently for what it is has all the power I need and fill up the tank and you have a range over 800 miles.
Electric windows for both front and rear including a lock on the drivers buttons to stop children opening the windows. I like being able to open the rear windows especially when ...

Advantages: Spacious, powerful, comfortable, economical Disadvantages: Many electrical faults, lots of blind spots, expensive parts.
Having owned my 406 for over a year now I have got to know it inside out and found out a lot of its characteristics, good and bad, which make it a car you will both love and hate.
When you first walk up to a 406 you cant help but fall in love with its 'growling' bonnet shape and sleek bodyline.Aesthetically this car can still hold its own.
Work your way inside and you'll find a pretty luxurious interior with polished walnut style trim on the dash ... ...Scotty from Star Trek happy.
That is where the 406 has went wrong. Too many electrical faults because the car relies on computer operated items. Many problems such as a 'Low Oil Level' warning and 'Airbag Warning' Lights coming on although oil level is fine and airbags have checked out okay.
The main talking point is the 2.0 hdi engine which alledgedly punts out 110bhp. Having used mine to go camping with a fair load in the back, and to tow my ...

Advantages: Lots of space and diesel engine very economical Disadvantages: A little underpowered (90bhp)
I have been the proud owner of this vehicle for about 18 months now and I can honestly say I enjoy driving it every day. This model is powered by the acclaimed 2-litre HDI diesel engine and economy is extremely impressive, even when heavily loaded up with family, luggage & roof box etc. Being the 90 bhp version (there is also a more powerful 110 bhp version), however, means you can never make a quick getaway but it never struggles and once on the open road, progress is smooth and very quiet especially on the motorway. Considering the size and weight of this Peugeot, handling is very crisp and it manoeuvres with a graceful agility. Specification is very generous in XL trim with trip computer, automatic rain sensing wipers, cd player and climate control as standard.
On the down side, the air conditioning failed earlier this year and it ...
Advantages: reliable spacious, good performance Disadvantages: build quality could be a little better
I now have experience of three Peugeot406s , two have been saloons and now I have a 2.0litre Hdi estate. In total I have probably done around 100,000 miles in the 406 models. After two petrol models I now have a diesel with the 110 bhp common-rail diesel engine.
The 406 has always been an attractive well-proportioned car and recent changes to the lights front and rear have given it a more aggressive posture. It is a comfortable car with seats neither too firm nor too soft and an adjustable steering column to help get the right driving position and importantly for the best view of the instruments. The interior trim is of a satisfactory standard and well equipped including passengers air-bag as well as a drivers air-bag.
I have a minor criticism in that the body does not resist knocks and creases well so after a year the car looks ...
Advantages: Responsive, fast, has lots of torque and is very economical. Disadvantages: Exhaust is expensive to fix, driving position.
My wife, our two kids and I regularly drive 200 miles from our home to our caravan in Cornwall. I have not run out of boot space yet, and the 200 miles are easily covered in comfort.
As the driver, when I first bought the car it took a couple of months before I got a driving position I felt comfortable with.
The best thing about the Xsara is its 2.0HDi Diesel engine. It is responsive, fast, has lots of torque and is very economical. You can easily expect to get 50 to 55 miles to a gallon provided you don't drive at 90 mph. If asked the Xsara will easily cruise at 90 to 95 mph all day long. The 2.0HDi is a perfect size for the Xsara, I have driven the Peugeot406 estate with the same engine and it is not a patch on the Xsara (slower, less mpg, etc.).
I may have been unlucky but if you are thinking of buying a second hand ...
