An ice-blue Peugeot 406 stood out from the crowd. At £4000 it was above my budget, but I could stretch to it if I needed to; most importantly, it ticked all the right boxes. Equipped with digital climate control and air conditioning, automatic windscreen wipers, electric mirrors, all round electric windows and a two-litre engine with automatic gear box, it - at the very least - deserved a test drive.

...owner of a five-year old Peugeot 406 GLX, and in that price the dealer did a full service, cambelt change, MOT and added a year's warranty to the car too.

Now I have never, in my driving life, considered buying a Peugeot, despite their relationship to Citroen. So many times I have got in older Pugs and simply hated them - their very layout has been attrocious, strips of badly fitted plastic everywhere, and the Peugeot 405 I had the ... more

Advantages: Ride comfort and refinement. Space. Equipment levels

...long-term road report on the Peugeot 406 2.0 GLX since I don’t own one, but having just hired one for the weekend, I do feel slightly more qualified to comment than someone who took one for a test drive. FIRST IMPRESSIONS Appearance-wise, the styling is nothing special, being on the sedate side of smart. It has been around for a few years now, having had one “mid-term” cosmetic upgrade in the grill and headlights department, plus ...
...of how long before it is replaced, which might be a deterrent to potential buyers. There are only two body styles, the saloon and the estate- there is no five-door hatch version. The interior is pitched at the larg(ish) family saloon market, being a reasonable 5-seater, and an extremely generous 4-seater. The back seats fold down in two sections to allow for long (but not high) loads. The boot itself seemed more than adequate for a family's luggage. ...

A Worthy Estate car

Advantages: reliable spacious, good performance
Disadvantages: build quality could be a little better

...now have experience of three Peugeot 406s , two have been saloons and now I have a 2.0litre Hdi estate. In total I have probably done around 100,000 miles in the 406 models. After two petrol models I now have a diesel with the 110 bhp common-rail diesel engine. The 406 has always been an attractive well-proportioned car and recent changes to the lights front and rear have given it a more aggressive posture. It is a comfortable car with seats neither ...
...to help get the right driving position and importantly for the best view of the instruments. The interior trim is of a satisfactory standard and well equipped including passengers air-bag as well as a drivers air-bag. I have a minor criticism in that the body does not resist knocks and creases well so after a year the car looks older than it is. Perhaps that is the car reflecting its owner. Performance is very good, if you have to have a diesel ...

Advantages: Good all round car
Disadvantages: Lack of power at times

I took delivery of my 406 lx Hdi 12 weeks ago. In that 12 weeks I have covered just under 13,000 miles. Every one of those miles has been a pleasure. The car itself is a 406 LX with the 90hp Hdi engine. At times you can feel tat the car does need a bit more power, normally noticed under acceleration, but having said that 90hp is enough to propel this car along at speeds that that should not be quoted!!! The cabin of the LX is well laid out and packed ...
...and Climate Control, electric front windows, CD player and a really useful feature – Automatic Wipers. As you can appreciate I spend quite a lot of time in the car and covering over 1000 miles a week the last thing you need is a car that is unpleasant to drive. This certainly is not one of these. The seats are firm enough to be supportive and yet soft enough not to cause discomfort on a long run. The stereo is all controlled from Peugeots very well ...

...another French car - the Peugeot 406 2.0 SRi Turbo. My first impression was very much a lasting impression. The handling and roadholding are excellent. The performance is a little slower than I would have expected from a 2.0 turbocharged engine, however it still has the acceleration when you need it if you hit the right rev range at the right time. Maybe it's just my car but it is seems to be a very thirst beast - I average about 20-23 mpg on urban ...

Monster Truck

Advantages: Excellent engine, economical
Disadvantages: Too big, gear changes

When I first picked up my company car I was delighted to see that it was a Peugot 406 and horrified to find that it was a diesel. My perception of diesels was that they were, slow, messy and noisy and performed terribly against a petrol equivalent. When I climbed in the first thing that struck me was the size, these cars are huge!!! if you don't like a big car do not choose this one as its a wopper! However it does carry all the benefits of a large ...
...is impressive, CD player, air conditioning, heated wing mirrors, cup holder.... its packed with features. As for being a diesel I can honestly say that without the rather noisy idling you really would not have a clue. This car is fast, smooth and quiet at speeds, and the economy is amazing. You can get an easy 500 miles out of a tank and cruise at top speeds of around 120 mph. On country roads and town driving where a little more caution is called ...

Review of Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi

Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI (90) LX (2002)

Advantages: Comfortable, good value, reliable
Disadvantages: Minor electrical faults

I have a 52 reg Peugeot 406 HDI LX (90hp) which I bought second hand 2 years ago in March 2006 at 3 years old and with 42,000 miles on the clock. At the time I was travelling long motorway and non-motorway mileage and needed a reliable and comfortable diesel car which would be happy on the many types of journey I was making. As far as I am concerned the 406 turned out to an excellent car for my needs. Aside from a couple of minor electrical niggles (fuel guage occasionally sticking and oil guage showing the wrong reading) there have been very few problems at all in the 45,000 miles I've travelled since I bought it. The engine has been excellent and continues to be so, it's comfortable to drive, especially over long distances and it's relatively fuel efficient for a large car (approx. 40-45mpg). Highly recomended as a good ...

Practical Peugeot.

Advantages: Reliable, economic, practical.
Disadvantages: None

A nice plain English op on a car. I purchased my Peugeot 406Hdi rapier Saloon in December 2001. Only the second brand new car I had ever purchased. The first being a Peugeot 305 a few years ago. That car had given me many trouble free miles so I thought I would stick with them. I suppose it?s a bit like the devil you know. As a cab driver in London it had to be a diesel car. Economy is the Number one rule as saving money these days is so important. There was a company in Scotland offering the best deal so I phoned, and arranged delivery. A week later my shiny metallic China blue Peugeot 406 car arrived. I like a largish car that?s comfortable. I like reliability and economy fuel consumption. Speed is not that important, I suppose functional is the best description. The Peugeot 406 fitted my needs on description, but ...
