The day I went to purchase a replacement car for my wife and the car sales guys were crowded around my 2nd hand car, confirmed what I already knew!!
Fell upon this car by accident and like most, never intended to buy a Peugeot. But let me introduce you to the Peugeot 406 SE 3.0 V6 Coupe. My BEST car ever by far!
The look;
It's sleek looks designed by Pininfarina himself (most noted for designing Ferrari's) turn heads wherever you go. As you would expect from this designer, every asthetic detail has been thought about giving the coupe the look of a car twice its price.
The power;
The 3.0 litre V6 engine gives you power whenever you need it and just keeps on pulling through the gears. Very quiet when cruising but gives a lovely roar when its tested to the full under hard acceleration! It is a heavy car and does need that power/weight ratio so I would suggest not going for the 2.0 litre version which I think will be underpowered.
The equipment;
Fully loaded is the best way I can describe it! From the rain sensors on the windscreen wipers (intermittent mode only) through to the fully electric leather seats (including seat warmers!). Stalk mounted sound control. Air con. Automatic dimming on central mirror. Nearly the full suite of everything you would expect in an executive car. No cruise control though.
The space;
Being a large car, the space is fantastic. Full family of 4 can sit very comfortably for even long distances. Front seats grip you like bucket seats in a rally car, but with all the elegance you would expect from Pininfarina. Even the back seats are shaped in a similar way to ease your passage. Boot is cavernous. Recently drove 150 miles to Luton airport fully laden with 2 weeks worth of sizeable luggage without any discomfort at all. Seats fold relatively flat and being a DIYer, due to the lenght/width of the car, I can confirm that it can carry some large pieces of wood! People stare at you in disbelieve when you slide the merchandise in through the boot and it keeps on getting swallowed up!
The costs;
High insurance grouping due to size of the engine I suppose as the security aspects of the car are fantastic, having an engine immobiliser. This year I will be 38 and paid £324.45. So not an excessive amount but I'd hate to be in my twenties and have to pay for insurance for this car! Last MOT, it failed on some indicator bulbs, brake hoses, track rod end and tyres and came to £153.73 for parts only. Rear exhaust pipe has corroded and having been to local exhaust centre, they said it was a specialist part and I needed to go through Peugeot itself so prepare to pay dealer prices. Speaking of which, engine has specialist software so your garage needs to have appropriate machine to interrogate Engine Management Software so again, main dealer for problems is probably your only bet.
Reliability and issues;
Up until recently, absolutely fantastic. No problems whether it be the heat of a British summer of the depths of its winter. Recently, problems with engine cutting out when idling during itsa warm up period, i.e. when automatic choke is engaged. Happens intermittantly and Peugeot having interrogated Engine Management Chip says its an electrical anomaly and are monitoring it. Radio part of the sound system doesn't work. Central electric mirror has shorted out (automatic dimming type).As with an 2 door car, the elderly parents don't particularly like climbing into the back. It only has 4 seats, due to the "bucket nature" of the rear set up so with a family of 4, little Jonny has not room to bring his mate along!

Conclusion;
Before I conclude, a motoring website recently has this recommendation on it; "Ferrari 360 Modena Replica based on Peugeot 406". Basically it was saying that the best car for replicating the Ferrari 360 was the Peugeot 406 3.0 Coupe, based not just on chasis but also on engine and equipment. Says it all really!
I would thoroughly recommend this car to anyone, whether they are family or individuals looking for there next car. It provides all the get up and go you need for those "boy racer" moments as well as all the practicalities for those family days out. The car itself is very well priced for what you get, although your pocket has to extend to include the extra expenses associated with a large engined, thorough-bred of a car.
A Ferrari stallion it may not be. But it shared the same birthing pool as its cousin and decided that it would go through life not shouting about itself at the top of its voice.It would let others decide for themselves.

Advantages: Sleek looks, awesome power and spacious
Disadvantages: Guzzles petrol, service/repair costs, insurance and poor alloys.

...appreciated seeing as it's a Peugeot after all and it certainly turns heads. Even though my model was made in 1999 (T) it still looks very modern on today's roads, if not, still better looking than some cars of today. The front of the car has sleek looking headlights, with the headlamp washers incorporated in the front bumper. These only work when using the screen wash function and only when the lights are on main beam. I'm not sure these have a ...
...The rear lights are typical Peugeot style, which I feel arn't bad and any aftermarket ones I have seen, I don't like. Maybe LED's should have been fitted to the later models. INTERIOR I must admit, I do like this interior as it fits the car very well. In particular, the leather interior. Very comfortable and due to the front heated electric seats, can adjust to your desired position or can be raised or lowered. There is also 2 memory ... Read review

Car review of Peugeot 406 3.0 coupé by jason.rowe

Advantages: Gorgeous Italian Designed Looks
Disadvantages: Low Residuals

...you may ask? Well the Peugeot 406 Coupe hardly conjures up the same images as Ferrari, Porsche or even BMW. Images of a dull saloon car are associated with the 406 marque, however if cars were bought on looks alone then the 406 Coupe would perhaps have been up there with the great. Aesthetically this car is very pleasing to the eye the Pinifarina lines remind the observer of Ferrari, and even after 5 years on the market it still looks fresh and ...
...it is no slouch, but Peugeot could have pushed that 3.0 Litre 24 valve engine so much more. Admittedly Puegeot improved the performance in 1999 taking the engine bhp from 194 to 210 with the introduction of variable valve timing . This car is not bought to be economical around town, on average I believe I get around 20mpg around town, but somewhat better on the motorway. However the official fuel consumption rates give a combined rate of 28mpg and ... Read review

Car review of Peugeot 406 3.0 coupé by hooligan854321

Advantages: Great looks and strong engine
Disadvantages: Parts and tyres are costly

I was lucky enough back at the end of the 90's to be able to choose a company car. Hidden in the lsit of mondeos and BMWs was this fine machine. I had spotted this beauty before the list arrived and had to have it. The styling is what first grabs your attetion, it looks good from any angle. And despite the bog engine it is really easy to drive both in the city and on the motorway. The car definitely turns heads but in my opinion you have to have ... Read review

Car review of Peugeot 406 3.0 coupé by youngas75

Advantages: Styling, Comfort, Safety
Disadvantages: French electronics, Dealerships

...was a ferrari in a peugeot garage... I've now had mine for over 2 years and I still grin when I see it. It is, simply one of the best looking cars around that real people can afford. Add to that the fact that they are very rare (I've seen maybe 7 in 2 years) and you know you've got something special. The interior is well laid out, all relevant information can be seen easily on clear displays and the multi dispaly on the D9 models gives outside temp, ...
...when I first got it. Peugeot fixed the ICE under warranty but wouldn't guarantee their own work (which suprised me) so I was a little annoyed when more gremlins appeared after the warranty period. Fuel consuption is great on long journeys, the car eats up the miles and with the climate control going and the cruise control off it easy to forget you're driving and get into the football on the radio! Round town and door to door you don't get much MPG ... Read review

Very beautiful yet lacks power
Car review of Peugeot 406 3.0 coupé by simonsta

Advantages: Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
Disadvantages: Not so quick as to scare you.

I love my 406 coupe. It;s 3 litre engine purrs, it is quiet, and reliable. The red leather seats and sleek ferrari-style lines make it a magnet of the opposite-sex variety. However, I find for a car of its engine size (V6 24v) that it is underpowered when compared to less attractive cars. With only 199BHP, it lacks that adrenalin-raising power. Sure, it is fast and pulls away faster than anybody *really* needs, but for the price you pay I might ...
...to its capabailities now, and the novelty value has worn off a little, but I'd just like that little bit more. But then again, it is not a sports-car, it's a luxury coupe. If I wanted to be a boy-racer I shouldn't have bought it! If it came down to a decision though, I wouldn't swap it for a Subaru! ... Read review
