Advantages: Lots of space and diesel engine very economical Disadvantages: A little underpowered (90bhp)
I have been the proud owner of this vehicle for about 18 months now and I can honestly say I enjoy driving it every day. This model is powered by the acclaimed 2-litre HDI diesel engine and economy is extremely impressive, even when heavily loaded up with family, luggage & roof box etc. Being the 90 bhp version (there is also a more powerful 110 bhp version), however, means you can never make a quick getaway but it never struggles and once on the ... ...the motorway. Considering the size and weight of this Peugeot, handling is very crisp and it manoeuvres with a graceful agility. On the down side, the air conditioning failed earlier this year and it was expensive to have repaired, but apart from that and a couple of minor electrical niggles (airbag warning light comes on for no reason) this car has, so far, been very reliable. We drove all the way to Italy and back through the Alps and Dolomites last summer and the Pug behaved perfectly, taking all roads and driving conditions in its stride. Safety and security are also well catered for with driver, passenger and side airbags, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and a deadlock function on all doors and the tailgate.
Now that the 407 SW has been launched, the 406 estate can be acquired for very little outlay, which makes it an ideal second hand choice for people looking for practical and economical transport. It also has the potential for a very long life, being well bolted together and the diesel should go on and on until a very high mileage is reached. Mine has almost completed its first one hundred thousand miles and feels good for at least the same again. In my opinion this is a very sophisticated motor car and easily the most practical car I have ever owned and I think my Border Collie, Merlin will second that, as he loves spreading out when travelling in the back, woof woof!!
Advantages: reliable spacious, good performance Disadvantages: build quality could be a little better
I now have experience of three Peugeot406s , two have been saloons and now I have a 2.0litre Hdiestate. In total I have probably done around 100,000 miles in the 406 models. After two petrol models I now have a diesel with the 110 bhp common-rail diesel engine.
The 406 has always been an attractive well-proportioned car and recent changes to the lights front and rear have given it a more aggressive posture. It is a comfortable car with seats neither too firm nor too soft and an adjustable steering column to help get the right driving position and importantly for the best view of the instruments. The interior trim is of a satisfactory standard and well equipped including passengers air-bag as well as a drivers air-bag.
I have a minor criticism in that the body does not resist knocks and creases well so after a year the car looks ...
Advantages: Responsive, fast, has lots of torque and is very economical. Disadvantages: Exhaust is expensive to fix, driving position.
My wife, our two kids and I regularly drive 200 miles from our home to our caravan in Cornwall. I have not run out of boot space yet, and the 200 miles are easily covered in comfort.
As the driver, when I first bought the car it took a couple of months before I got a driving position I felt comfortable with.
The best thing about the Xsara is its 2.0HDi Diesel engine. It is responsive, fast, has lots of torque and is very economical. You can easily expect to get 50 to 55 miles to a gallon provided you don't drive at 90 mph. If asked the Xsara will easily cruise at 90 to 95 mph all day long. The 2.0HDi is a perfect size for the Xsara, I have driven the Peugeot406estate with the same engine and it is not a patch on the Xsara (slower, less mpg, etc.).
I may have been unlucky but if you are thinking of buying a second hand ...
