My parents bought a 2003 model Peugeot 406 2.0 petrol saloon brand new and I was lucky enough to be among the first to drive it. From the outside, the 406 saloon looks great, though the... more

Advantages Advantages Spacious, Comfortable, Economical, Pretty

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sales-Rep Reputation, Depreciation in Value, Driving Position

The stage was set for a challenge - to buy a car for doing my new job in that was comfortable yet cheap and that fit into my budget. It had to be large enough to put the family in, comfortable on long journies, and relatively inexpensive to run. Gone are the days of my company cars or a funded fuel card for my own vehicles - this was serious. I had to buy a car that I was going to have to pay for, and it was coming as a bit of a shock. Even more shocking was what I could get for my money - which wasn't much. I had a budget of £3000 to spend and I had to buy something that was all of the above ... more

Advantages Advantages Ride comfort and refinement. Space. Equipment levels

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sedate styling. Due for replacement?

This is not intended as a long-term road report on the Peugeot 406 2.0 GLX since I don’t own one, but having just hired one for the weekend, I do feel slightly more qualified to comment than someone who took one for a test drive. FIRST IMPRESSIONS Appearance-wise, the styling is nothing special, being on the sedate side of smart. It has been around for a few years now, having had one “mid-term” cosmetic upgrade in the grill and headlights department, plus a different rear-light treatment. This usually starts the thought process of how long before it is replaced, which might ... more

Advantages Advantages looks great, handles well, low maintenance costs

Disadvantages Disadvantages rather cramped rear for a saloon

My parents bought a 2003 model Peugeot 406 2.0 petrol saloon brand new and I was lucky enough to be among the first to drive it. From the outside, the 406 saloon looks great, though the coupe definitely has a sportier look. It has a pair of large headlamps seperated by a plastic honeycomb grill (which I never liked btw). Ours came with default 15 inch alloy wheels and a boot spoiler. In my opinion, the 406 saloon is among the best handling cars in it's class. The steering wheel is soft but secure and you have the impression of being in complete control of the automobile. The only downside to ... more

Advantages Advantages Frugal, comfortable, quiet, good spec, it's an estate

Disadvantages Disadvantages slightly underpowered, quirky automatic wipers

I Love my 406. Finding myself redundant in mid 2000, I was faced for the first time in my life with buying my own car and, much worse, insuring it! Knowing little about such things, I approached a man in the trade whom I know and trust (a rare and valuable entity) and asked him to find me a reasonable estate car for not much money. He came up with a 1.6 K reg 405 estate and it was brilliant. By January 2003 with 150,000 on the clock it was still going strong when I decided it was time to upgrade. If Peugeot had carried on making 405s a bit longer, I would probably have had another. But they ... more

Advantages Advantages reliable spacious, good performance

Disadvantages Disadvantages build quality could be a little better

I now have experience of three Peugeot 406s , two have been saloons and now I have a 2.0litre Hdi estate. In total I have probably done around 100,000 miles in the 406 models. After two petrol models I now have a diesel with the 110 bhp common-rail diesel engine. The 406 has always been an attractive well-proportioned car and recent changes to the lights front and rear have given it a more aggressive posture. It is a comfortable car with seats neither too firm nor too soft and an adjustable steering column to help get the right driving position and importantly for the best view of the ... more
