I fell in love with the 407 as soon as I saw it and got a great price on an ex-demonstration SV 2.2 4dr automatic. When its working well, its a pleasure to drive. But I have been plagued with recurrent 'minor problems'.
First I'll mention the good things. The climate control is a treat - it can be set to disperse the air so its not blowing right in your face. There are separate temperature controls for driver and passenger, although I tend to disable this function. Everything is controlled by a stylish on-board computer, which keeps track of every aspect of the car. And a full diagnostic can be run at the press of a button. The interior is spacious and well-built, with none of the cheap plastic which seems to be everywhere these days. The seats are comfortable and there is plenty of storage space, including a large central console. Air bags are plentiful and the whole experience feels very safe. Automatic dimming of rear-view mirror is a nice touch. Its generally good to drive on motorways, especially with the cruise-control on, although does feel a bit bulky around town. Acceleration is ok for an automatic, but nothing special.
Now the bad bits. Fuel consumption is apalling. On-board computer is a bit over-sensitive at times, reporting faults that don't really exist and leading to unnecessary visits to the service department. I had to have a new engine harness fitted because of a persistent warning light. When I park on a hill, the oil level warning light comes on (and stays on for a couple of days). Fuel consumption is apalling. I had to have the suspension fixed because of a (in the words of the dealer) 'known Peugeot problem'. Seat fabric is easily damaged by baby seats. Boot is large but the opening is relatively small, so some things (even certain pushchairs) just wont go in there. Did I mention the fuel consumption, which is apalling? Steep depreciation.
In many ways, I love my car, but its had its problems. I now wish I'd waited for the cabriolet, which looks even better. Many of the problems I've mentioned may be resolved in newer cars, but beware.
