Having owned two Renault Espaces over the past 8 or 9 years, our last vehicle change in September 2003 gave us the opportunity to go and look for a new rather than a used car. Not liking the rear end shape of the new Espace we started looking elsewhere. In the end for us it came down to a choice between the Peugeot 807 and the Chrysler Voyager. The 807 won because the available models had more up to date features. This may be different now, however, we remain very pleased with our choice. Importantly, it also came out well in crash test reports.
This has been our first diesel and we have been very impressed with the smoothness and power available from the 2.2 litre engine. The mpg numbers have also been a pleasant surprise for us coming from the petrol alternatives.
The 807 scored well with us because of the electric sliding doors ( saves the kids scraping normal opening ones on the side of the house), the easy to adjust seats ( rear ones can be simply tipped up to create room for shopping or luggage without having to remove them) and lots of other well thought out features.
Some oddities need getting used to. Firstly the handbrake is on the drivers right. This creates a useful piece of storage area between the front seats. Secondly the speedo etc dials are high up in the middle of the dashboard instead of being in front of the driver.
The drive is very stable and there is plenty of power available.
Wing mirrors fold automatically in when the car is parked and locked. Be warned though the children loved initially to play with the electric doors.
The only annoyances we've had so far are a recall by the manufacturers to replace the turbocharging union sleeve. This was dealt with swiftly and efficiently. The other is the windscreen wipers, when on automatic rain sensing, sometimes stop in various positions across the windscreen instead of parking themselves neatly.
We have the seven seat version which gives all the passengers a comfortable ride with plenty of leg room, middle seat power point for portable DVD player etc and lots of luggage space when the rear seats are tipped forward.
Nine months on from the original car selection we are still very pleased with the car and would not exchange it for a different model.
