Review of "Peugeot Partner Tepee 1.6 HDi"
Finally, my new car has arrived.
The brief for choosing it was that it must be roomy, comfortable and suitable for extended journeys. Looks are immaterial, practicality outweighs style and with the Peugeot Partner that is exactly what you get.
Starting at the outside what you get is a box on wheels. It has front wheel drive so will travel on snowy roads when the BMWs, Volvos and Jaguars slither into the ditch.
It has the ubiquitous 1.6 litre French diesel engine so fuel economy is a healthy 50+ mpg. The high roof benefits from four roof lights so that the interior is well lit. There are also two stowage nets and a roof mounted console for stowage and which also has controls for heating and ventilation.
Above the driver and front passenger sun visors there is a stowage space that takes the folder containing my work paperwork and behind the driver console is a locker that takes the pens, pencils, bits of string and other detritus that is a necessary part of my working day. To the left of the driver between the seats is another large storage locker. It has a sliding shutter top and would take a large box of cereal, a generous sized lunch box or a well behaved cat.
In the back are three seats in a 60/40 folding arrangement. They fold to offer a huge flat loading area. The front windows are electric opening, the rear ones are pivoting type openers. The rear doors are sliding doors, making the loading of large pieces of equipment or less mobile people a lot easier. Moving round to the back, the huge tailgate opens to reveal a cavernous boot. In the boot there is a nice touch, the interior light un-clips and becomes a handy rechargeable torch. The tailgate makes a great shelter for those occasions when I am hunting for tools in the pouring rain, but its size does mean that I can't park too close to a wall or other cars if I want to be able to open it. There are storage spaces everywhere in the car, including beneath the foot space in the back. The high doors makes it easy to enter and exit, even if you are feeling a bit stiff and elderly.
That's the description over, what is it like to drive?
The first time you get in it feels huge. The statistics tell another story. It is a couple of inches shorter than a Vauxhall Astra and about the same width as a Citroen C3.
The illusion of size comes about because of the raised seating position. This provides excellent all round visibility and the upright seating position means that you can drive it for a couple of hours without getting a stiff back or achey knee.
I drive over 4000 miles per month so I don't have time for anything that puts style over content. Driving from Wareham to Swanage this morning I was told that the road ahead was impassable due to ice. The person telling me was driving a 5 series BMW. He hadn't been able to get up the slight hill leaving the hill. A combination of rear wheel drive and over enthusiastic throttle use had led to this conclusion. I pulled away in second, changed up to third and managed to get up the hill at 25 mph with no problems at all. The Peugeot didn't falter or slide at all.
There is a hint of body roll if you throw it fast into tight corners but nothing that bothers me. The drive is sure-footed and confident and performance is quite lively.
The four speaker Radio / CD unit is good quality and radio reception holds up in places where it failed in my Ford Focus. This car is no great looker but if that bothers you there are plenty of less practical and comfortable cars to choose from.
For the first time I have a car where I can get all my work stuff and a fortnight's shopping in the boot. It is a pleasure to drive and inspires confidence in tricky weather conditions. I would strongly recommend this car to anyone needing affordable, practical and comfortable transport.
If you need to try to impress girls you can choose from any of the rival models that I drove past stuck in ditches this morning, on my way back from Wareham on ice covered roads..
