****This op was one of my early ones. I have re-edited due to the fact that 106's are no longer being built due to the new 107 going into production in it's place (although there is no date available for this yet) ...***

I bought my 106 summer 02 and I love it! It only has an 1124 engine, but I find it extremely nippy!

It offers great handling and is very responsive for such a reasonably basic model. At the time I bought mine, power steering and Clarion cd player didn't come as standard - they do now so it's even better value on the family pocket. Driver airbag is included.

What I really like is that with a few accessories here and there it can really stand out. I added some of my own accessories: alloys, spoiler, rear lights, grille, and arches, chrome mirrors (I'm a bit of a fanatic I know!), add a few little trimmings for a bit of an individual/sporty touch. They are really easy to mod up and there's lots of choice.

But, put aside this fanciness and the basics are more attractive than most cars in this price bracket (Citroen Saxo. Ford Ka etc). For example, automatic headlamp adjusters come as standard, these are particularly useful when there's a lot of weight in the back - you cast the lamps downwards to stop people being blinded by your (now upwards if not adjusted) lamps. Tinted glass and opening rear quarter windows also come as standard. There is plenty of leg room in the back, not too cramped at all - but would not recommend for longer journeys.

The interior is pretty basic. Cloth trim which is colour matched to your paint. My only gripes are the manual wind-up windows and there is no aircon.

The instrument panel is a bit basic, but then again that is what this car is all about.
Boot space is reasonable as well, with plenty space for your weekly shop.

What's more, Peugeot's retain their value - so you wont lose too much when it's time to part company with it (aawww...)

Interesting points to note are that it's insurance group 3, co2 emissions 145 AND 6 months tax is only a piddly £57.75. A full tank of fuel costs me between £25 - £30 and for this I average about 350 miles! (loud gasps from the readers..), 60 brake horse and 0-62 in a mere 14.9 seconds (o.k. not lightning I know, but reasonable for the engine size).

The colour choice for the Independence is fairly decent ...

Sahara Yellow (goldish yellow)
Moonstone (silver/blue)
Firedance (burnt orange)
Cypress green (racing green - this was my choice!)
Kingfisher Blue (royal blue)
Cherry Red
Aluminium
Black

As I have pointed out at the start of my op, these are no longer available for new purchase (unless of course, you are lucky enough to find a dealer who still has an unregistered one on their forecourts as stock) due to the impending production of it's successor - the 107. If you are after one of these second hand from a dealer, expect to pay between £4000 - £4500 for a '51 plate (Sept 01).

If buying from a dealership at this time of year, be sure to ask for some extras. Reason being is that at this time of year dealers find themselves with more stock than customers. There will be plenty of trade-ins on their forecourts from people who purchased the new September '53 plate and in turn, this means dealers are keener than ever for your custom to clear some space in their forecourts for the brand new stock. Take advantage of this.

Happy car buying.

Nice op. I can tell you are in the motor trade (I worked briefly for a VW dealership a while back and it was an eye-opener)! Cheers, Simon
