Review of "Phantom of the Opera, The (2004)"
With a stunning set, a star studded cast and a rather lovely (slightly deranged) Phantom, this film was enjoyable. It was romantic, comic with lashings of drama and, of course, plenty of music. A brilliant choice for those who aren't able to see the live show.Being a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals and having heard some the recordings of the original cast, I found this version of the musical slightly disappointing. Although it's set in an opera house, and the plot has a heavy emphasis on music, the voices of the cast were extremely disappointing. Although I may be able to forgive our poor Phantom for his rusty voice, as he is a composer, Christine's voice was not at all suitable to the role of an opera singer and was far too weak and immature for this role. As this film is titled 'The Phantom of the OPERA' rather than 'The Phantom of the Musical', I found something very much lacking in the soundtrack. Lloyd Webber's music is, of course glorious, but unfortunately the cast do not live up to the music.
Although this film was enjoyable, I don't think it's one for a music enthusiast and would suggest that you go to see it live or buy a recording of the original cast.
