Advantages: Features, Connectivity, Media and Video formats the envy of other DVD recorders. Disadvantages: No more live TV for me! I'm re-watching my recordings upscaled
After years of sterling service I retired my Philips DVDR70 DVDrecorder for a newer model. As I had recently updated my TV to a HD-Ready 1080i LCD panel I thought I would opt for one that offered both video-upscaling to 1080i and HDMI connectivity. I chose to look among those models of DVDrecorder manufactured by Philips, after all they did invent the CD/DVD technology upon which all players and recorders are based together with my great experience living with my first Philips DVDR70 DVDrecorder.
The DVDR 5500 not only offered a built-in Freeview tuner but also one for analogue TV reception, until the analogue "switch-off" looming in the upcoming years, making recording both analogue and digital TV so simple. The Freeview has a full 5-day EPG for you to review the upcoming digital schedule as well as program the recorder direct ...
Advantages: Simple to use and good functionality. Disadvantages: Startup is a little slow.
Just like the other user, I too had this issue with the recording problem with Philips brand 4x+RW discs. Having had some prior experience with PC drives, I logged onto the Philips website (search for 'P4C' ) and burned the firmware update for this recorder onto a CDRW. After updating the set, it was able to record onto the philips discs!
It also seems to be able to record on most minus format discs and a few +RDL discs. Video and audio quality is OK. Build quality is OK. Remote is uncluttered but the multifunction buttons (FFWD is long-press of chp fwd) needs getting used to.
The main gripe I have is the long start up time but it seems that all recorders have this issue. HDD-based recorders, it seems, can have even longer startup times depending on the number of titles in the HDD! Why can't DVDrecorders be like their ...
Advantages: It's a Sony, fully compatible with existing kit and buckets of features Disadvantages: Not as cheap as third party units
for getting it repaired, but as I?d gone entirely digital a number of years ago I suggested it was pointless getting it fixed, and I could give him one of my spare VCRs.
My suggestion was that he could clear some of the clutter beneath his 26? ?fatscreen? Sony TV and do away with his DVD player and freeview box.
The fact that he chose a Sony unit meant that the remote control unit could work both the recorder and TV.
He?s also interested in digital photography, and the ability to create slideshows greatly appealed to him.
The unit comes with all the sort of things you? d expect
It works as an ordinary Freeview box ? which means you don?t have to throw out your old analogue CRT telly. It?s also got HDMI so when you DO upgrade to a ?flatscreen? telly, you can get the highest quality pictures from it.
The tuner can be made to write ...
